"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.” It does not say separation of church and state or the abolition of religion from government. They didn't want a clone of the king and the Church of England. They didn't want the government to dictate people's beliefs or control religions, hence Jefferson's Danbury Baptist letter. Like many things, they were protecting against the intrusion of the government. It probably also had something to do with local leaders burning people at the stake and throwing them in rivers. The wall statement in the Danbury letter is where people get the separation from, not the Constitution. The funny thing, which shows they are taking it out of context, is Jefferson went to church in the Capital Building, where they held church services. If he was so against things to the degree people want to suggest and believed in the absence of religion in government, then why did he attend church literally in the Capital where Congress met? The oath of office on a bible with "so help me God" came from Washington. So if there is supposed to be an absence of religion in government, then why do people get sworn in on a bible and say so help me God? So I stand behind freedom of not from religion. @JohnSnowsHair since we talked about it There is nothing wrong with individuals elected to public service being outwardly religious. There IS something wrong with religious beliefs influencing policy. This is why it is correct that schools should not start their day with a prayer. That is coercive by the state. Starting the day with a moment of silence for personal reflection where individuals who choose to can take time to pray is perfectly fine. That's the line.

Are people just eating sticks of butter? Like, seriously, we buy a pack of butter maybe once every month or so.

I'm trying to do the math in my head and I can't seem to wrap my head around it... First of all I'm not seeing $3 butter anywhere. So here's what I'm seeing at my hillbilly hinterland grocery store... Four sticks of butter is good for at least a month right? And that's, what, $50 a year in butter?

You don’t have to have a PhD in Economics to figure that out.
November 8, 20241 yr We should close this thread now, and I'll offer the following election-related clip. This is one of my favorites SNL skits, from the time before it became overtly political:
November 8, 20241 yr I do the grocery shopping in my house. Yes the price of things has gone up. No it's not primarily because of any policies Biden passed. But the president for whatever reason pays the political price for these sorts of things. What's galling is that Biden passed things like CHIPS and infrastructure that is going to set up the next four years to be pretty solid footing economically coming out of that pandemic. He actually did the things that Trump couldn't. And now Trump is going to take all the credit.

So I spend more when she’s home, but less when she’s gone. Also, I have the body of a Greek god, and I have to eat a lot to maintain it.

In the U.S., there is no state religion, although I would say this nation is in large part a Christian nation, or at least was a Christian nation. While we are a nation of Christians, we are not and never were a Christian nation. Our founders made their intent perfectly clear. "The government of the United States is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion.” John Adams

I understand that you have been led to believe that you will all be sent to concentration camps…(well those of you who aren’t deported…JK) but the truth is a lot more boring. So, first of all, none of you are going to be arrested, fined, jailed, have your property confiscated or sold into slavery. I know your gender studies professor has been claiming otherwise since March, but the only people actually in danger of anything bad happening to them are those who actually break the law, and they will still get due process. Well them and the excess government bureaucrats who are about to lose their tax payer supported jobs, but even they will probably get a nice severance. You on the other hand will be able to pretty much continue life as normal. Censorship is no longer the currency of the realm, so feel free to continue melting down on Reddit without fear of retribution from the government. You’re free to hate Donald Trump, me, the founders, the color white, math, working out, guns your parents and everyone ignoring you on Tinder. You won’t be censored, de platformed or have trumped up (pun intended) charges brought against you for disagreeing with the government. Now, on the other hand you won’t be getting your school loans paid for by the taxes of the hard working plumber you think you’re better than, but other than that, you are free to live in your mothers basement while you wait for that job that pays you "what you deserve” for all that education you received in lesbian dance theory. Also, good news. Your taxes are going to be reduced, which probably doesn’t matter a whole lot to you because you don’t pay any, but your parents are really going to appreciate it! Also there will almost certainly be a lot more job opportunities and a much better environment to start a business. Which again…probably won’t matter to you immediately, but you will appreciate the additional access to goods and services due to increased capital investment, which you no doubt dream about one day seizing just as soon as the Democratic Socialists of America figure out which pronouns to use on their call to arms. Also, if you do plan to step outside and touch grass, you will be significantly less likely to get mugged or step on a hypodermic needle. (Unless you live in San Francisco…we’ll try to clean it up but the 10th amendment says they’re allowed to live in filth if they so choose.) If you have any questions, our number can be found on the back of any job application, so this may be the last time we will communicate. Thanks again, welcome back to America!
