5 pending free agents with ties to Eagles’ DC Vic Fangio - NBCSP
LB Andrew Van Ginkel: Van Ginkel played just one season under Fangio but he started 11 games for the Dolphins in 2023 and had 69 tackles, an interception and a career-high six sacks. Under Fangio, Van Ginkel (6-4, 242) showed off his versatility, playing some inside linebacker but also on the edge, especially after some injuries started piling up. That type of versatility could be intriguing for the Eagles as they start fresh with Fangio. And last offseason, Van Ginkel was thinking about leaving as a free agent when Fangio called him and told him that he was a good fit in his defense. Van Ginkel ended up being the highest-graded player on that Dolphins defense, according to PFF.

LB Josey Jewell: The 29-year-old is a former fourth-round pick out of Iowa who has played all six of his NFL seasons in Denver. He played under Fangio from 2019-2021. During that span, Jewell played in 33 games with 21 starts. It was Fangio who made Jewell a full-time starter back in 2020 and gave him the green dot for communication. Here’s what Fangio said about Jewell during the 2020 season:

Would it be a swap for Reddick plan?

I'm not sure how they would compare.

What's your opinion?

Don’t think they compare. Think it would moving the money move. Going with Ginkel and Nolan Smith…while extending Sweat. Ginkel had a good season under Fangio in Miami. So he’d come right in with a year under the coach and scheme already. Big part of the thinking being turning to Nolan Smith much more than his rookie season. Get him much more involved. Then they could consider keeping BG on one final season. Or it could just give reason to draft another Edge player adding to the rotation. Maybe converting that Hargrave compensatory pick at the end of the third round.

Could you get Sweat extended and Ginkel signed to a multi year commitment for the same cost as Reddick?

Reddick sort of killed his trade value by coming right out stating he’s going to choose to stay if all things end up being equal(if we match the trade partners figures)

You can’t trade for any player of Reddick’s talents for as cheap as his draft pick offering is assumed to be at. A third this year and a third next year for Reddick is the strongest I’ve even heard mentioned we’d be looking for even.

Instead of a grab bag third round pick…many GMs would rather bring in the proven commodity. Reddick has shown well in several different places already. So he translates…just can’t be a stubborn stuck in your ways coach. You adapt to the elite pass rusher. Reddick gets home as fast anybody I’ve seen.

Gotta have the money to spend…narrows down the options to almost half the league right there.

Need to bring in the LB Azeez Al- Shaair for Tenn. originally from the Niners. Similar logic to this story. Instead of linking the D player with Fangio…he played for our new LB coach. Heat seeking missile! Fast! Hurts people tackling with authority! They don’t slip away and break away from this cat. He tackles guys…they go backwards!

Our team was so pathetic tackling that just even considering bringing in a guy that doesn’t have noodle armed tackles is exciting and refreshing. He’s looking to make a play….or at least an impact! Next level from just even being a pro defender trying to make a tackle.

I love those LB and S playmakers that look to attack the ball while engaging. Whole different way of playing D than our team has provided for a long time.

Since Jenkins

Just think of that easy flip of the coin for our D. If instead of missing tackles consistently…guys that are looking to make plays by stripping the ball….or at least making sure the opponent pays the price for their gains.

The end of 2021 season and 2022 season we had that identity as physical aggressors. Lost that…easily predictably last season. But should be automatic default way of taking care of business for defenders.

Siri has our D playing much to passive. Just rarely witnessed that really work for a D mentality.

I want Patrick Queen to roam our second level of our D. But can easily settle for Azeez. Being that the bar has been so low here that he’ll be a massive boost to anything we’ve been used to under Rosie.

Azeez is the great bargain I predict right now. Get him at something like 7 mil per. Queen will likely be 20.

Maybe Fangio could optimize Jeremy Chinn. That athlete that he can handle multiple roles. Slot, all S, some LB.

Trading Reddick saves 15.5m for us would still like to keep him…. Hard pass on extending Sweat I’m not even sure he fits with us now as it is I’d look to trade him. BG if we need a rotational pass rusher maybe but it’s time to move on and get younger all around. Definitely should be looking to draft and edge and playing Smith more

I think trading Sweat and extending Reddick is what they do.   Extending Reddick will save a good amount of cap. Sweat could bring a 3rd rounder and you go from there.
