PSU WR Trebor Pena to the Jags

As an actual Presbyterian, I hope he says "No."

So based on needs and who they picked:

  • Edge - got a starting quality guy in Greenard, solved. Would have liked to see another draft pick added but they can add next year

  • O line: projects at OT and OG. Depth for this year but need to develop. I don't see a direct replacement for Dickerson yet, and him and Jurgens injuries are very concerning. But if they are healthy then these guys can be coached up for a year.

  • Safety: well a 7th round pick but people that were aware of Cole Wisniewski seem to like him. Potential to be another Blankenship but it's a gamble. They can always add safety free agent but at that point you're picking scraps so we'll see. But I'm fine with safety being a weaker position when the rest of the defense is solid.

  • TE: not the guy I expected and he's a receiving TE not a blocking TE but if Mannion and Grizzard eyed him as another weapon for the offense to groom behind Goedert, that's fine. I would have preferred a complete TE to replace Goedert. I don't like TE personnel giving away the plays but hopefully our new coaches aren't dumb like Patullo. I wanted to double dip here, perhaps they sign UDFA Michael Trigg.

  • WR: wasn't a need for this year but in a supposed strong class and knowing AJ will be traded we all wanted to take advantage. Seems like they got a good one to add to the mix and open things up for the offense. The WR room is overall improved for depth as well with their other acquisitions.

  • DT: a lot of people wanted Uar and they got him. Will be a fun project to watch but may take years of course. A lot of fans were hoping for depth, keep that luck going like with Williams and Ojomo. Will Ty Robinson do anything this year? For this year they've got JC, JD and Ojomo and then some guys to mix in so we'll see. Thankfully Clint Hurtt is a good D line coach and knows what he's doing.

Getting a developmental QB was a nice bonus. I think the "issue" with this draft isn't exactly in who they took but in who they didn't take instead. There are some guys here who might be JAGs or decent starters but we may look back and wish they'd taken someone better. Like Markell Bell, they could have taken an OT project in a later round. But they usually do a good job drafting O line.

I like the draft overall and day 3 was the most fun to watch and react to. They made good selections on day 3, excited to see which guys make it. Especially excited to see Mannion's new offense and these new weapons.

Our last two picks might be my favorites of this draft.

What are the new rules?

"Current" PS rules as opposed to what they were when they drafted Mailata. Expanded PS, vets can sit on PS, and you can elevate players on game day from the PS. None of that existed when they drafted Mailata.

I wonder if going back to the international player well repeatedly is a strategy in and of itself. Like players aside, it's probably beneficial to establish inroads/reputation to these international program guys.

Isn't there an international exemption?

It's been talked about, because he was drafted, no. Maybe as a TC body, but not for the roster.

If he goes to PS then they'd have an extra PS spot but he'd have to get there.

same. Ive been refreshing like crazy.

Still some guys out there. Maybe theyll all be announced at once but its never been like that before.

What do we like about the newb (James-Newby, Edge)?

Yeah, there is a meta strategy. Not only do you get better inside information, but for guys who don't get drafted, you have the reputation of being a team that actually takes the time and effort to develop guys with a long-term vision. So, if you're an UDFA, this has to be the #1 spot you want to land.

That's probably what really caused him to fall. Aside from the obvious "never played football" thing, teams would be very, very happy to generate some international hype over an otherwordly athlete...not to mention the upside that is completely absent from anyone else on day 3. From that standpoint in isolation, he could have gone even earlier than this.

Truly committing to his development means dealing with a 52 man roster for a year or 2.

Hell maybe just teach him to play ST vs punts and fgs just to get snaps off carter or davis

Maybe Howie thinks that the draft class is so good we don't need UDFAs.

Reminds me of Antwan Powell-Ryland from last year's 7th round. Highly productive quick undersized edge. I hope he makes it. But preferred Tucker of Heldman.
