Ok, that makes sense. I didn't realize he had a ton of money not accounted for from his previous contract. I know he hit free agency last year - my thought was that means he was clean, and this was a fresh contract. Does this also mean he would have had this cap hit last year if he had signed elsewhere? I don't remember it being talked about.

He didn't hit free agency last year. He was under contract and Eagles tried to trade him. They couldn't find a deal so told him he had to take a pay cut of he would get cut.

Excellent post. It was a bit of both: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mWfXMrB237g

Well based on Coop’s breakdown it was neither of my assumptions 😂

So they were in basic quarters coverage, so no Apex on the play.

Why are there pro-rated bonuses from 2026-2029 on a 1-year deal? Is there not a better way to structure this contract? I don't get it.

Since I don't normally understand this stuff either, let me take a crack at it anyway. I'm guessing it's a way to kick the can down the road. We'll pay you a signing bonus, but instead of paying all of it now to save us money, we'll pay you a chunk of it now and spread the rest out later IF we extend another contract. If not, then you'll just get all of it after a year if you sign elsewhere. Some kind of Howie cap wizardry or something.

Close but you have it opposite. It's we'll pay you all of it now and we'll just spread the cap hits. If we extend another contract it will stay spread out but if you sign elsewhere we'll take all of the cap hit now.

It's really two things, cash vs cap. Goedert got paid all of that money already, he's not getting anything if he leaves. It's just how Howie accounts for the cap aspect of the cash he already paid.

No. They save cap space if they trade him in June.

I know that. But you need cap space for the guy that replaces AJ.

We agree he isn't a great passer, so what's stupid is to ignore the fact that he does need as much talent around him as possible. He needs a good run game and he needs good WRs because the other QBs that were mentioned didn't have to use their legs and he is slowing down. Smith may be a good 1, but will he look as good when teams don't have to focus on them both? Hurts would be going from two elite WRs who can go deep on any play to one. When a QBs isn't as strong at spreading it around and progressing that's an issue. Bottom line is that isn't a shot at Hurts but just the facts. That offense will not be better off without Brown. I don't see better options at QB, so support the guy and give him the best chance possible to succeed.

Every QB needs as much talent around them as possible, that's like the point of roster building. People say Allen just needs weapons, Burrow needs an O line, etc. Why aren't they elevating the players around them and winning championships? People say it's because they don't have weapons. So it's double standard logic. Eli was helped by great defense and had people around him too. Great QBs still have weapons, defense, great coaching.

He was Apex on the play, lined up over the second guy in. The CB was well off but had the outside receiver. When the RB went to the flat and Baun went with him, that freed DeJean up. He went with the flow, read Mahomes and turned back inside. I think you were dead on.

@BigEFly So where does Michael Carter II fit into this?

Everyone was disappointed in him last year because he couldn't get on the field...but that's because he's not an outside CB2 and the Eagles committed to keeping Coop in his current role. Carter II has actually played some really, really good football with the Jets, just not as an outside CB. The fact that the Eagles bothered to keep him around after not using him at all last year suggests they envision a role opening up for him.

If they can actually get Carter II to function well as a safety...you'd have 3 DB's in Coop, Mukuba, and Carter II that are extremely comfortable stepping into the box in man coverage against a slot WR or back pedaling pre-snap into a high safety. The interchangeable looks would be absolute chaos for a QB at the LOS.

Kubena, Berman’s partner at The Athletic, posted when Carter was adjusted on his contract that he had practiced at S since he was traded for. I think that is a work in progress. You may recall that I posted last season that Carter did the opposite of Mukuba coming out of college. Mukuba had played nickel back more than S. Carter had played mostly S. Note an UDFA that got some elevation and surprised me when he played in PS, Brandon Joseph, was listed as a S when signed but was mainly a nickel back. I think all three are S/NCB in the NFL.

Lighter than I like at S but that probably harkens back to my youth when teams ran the veer, T or wishbone. Back then the SS was more LB than S. That was sort of the advent of the term Free Safety. Those terms are as dead as the term Weak Safety. I think Vic is willing to sacrifice size for speed and quickness.

Carter has demonstrated the nickel skills he wants in a S. He does want S instincts and angles too. I think that is what Carter was working on knocking some of the rust off of. They have to be good at tackling, which made Mukuba a second round pick.

Eagles have seven of those at this point. Three probably can’t play nickel. Those are Brown, Castro-Fields and Sam. The four with S/NCB skills are the three I mentioned and Deajean. People look at Ringo and say move him to S. What instincts or nickel skills does he have? That’s the focus on size.

Depending on how the board breaks, I think they draft a S this year. I am looking for one with the skills I mentioned. But the cupboard isn’t as bare as some posters suggest.

Nobody said they didn't, but if we are stipulating Hurts isn't a good passing QB taking away weapons isn't a good thing. Yes, Eli had great defenses, and could be an absolute idiot at times, but nobody ever said Eli isn't a good passing QB and he was able to do more with less, so there is no double standard. You can't just say well the Manning brothers won SBs without good weapons so Hurts will be fine. That's ridiculous. If you aren't a great passing QB you need something else, which used to be his legs, but he's slowing down. The OL and run game were a huge help the SB year, but those are up in the air, so the only saving grace this year might be Brown and Smith. He is going to need them. I'm not taking a shot at him. I've said they don't have better options and they could do worse.

When are they gonna ditch Missy? I can't believe he may be on the team next year. Who gets to keep his job with 3 of last 6 years being terrible and the last 2 years especially? And potentially costing a playoff game with a missed extra point this year. He's toast!! Should have cut him late in the season.

Can someone please explain to me how Goedert costs $20m against the cap if he doesn't re-sign? What would be the purpose of structuring a 1-year contract like this? It's only 1 year - wtf am I missing? There are no restructures to create this dead cap by kicking the can down the road like we always do with Lane and did with Kelce, Fletcher Cox, etc. @vikas83 , will you please get your cute little tush in here and crunch some numbers and decipher what kind of contract for a 1-year deal involves dead cap? I look forward to being educated by the hardest working Financial Analyst I've ever known.

He's gonna need AJ Brown circa 2023. Offense can use speed. They are too easy to defend right now. They got away with being superior one on one players for awhile. But no longer are. Only guy in his prime right now is Devanta. I think Barkley peaked in 2024-2025. Looked like Giants version last year with a so so offensive line. Although still good. Need more Tank this year.

We agree on Tank and hopefully the new guy uses him more. All I'm trying to say is unless they are punting on the season they should keep him and I don't see the wisdom in doing so now.
