For me, it was the data on cancer risks linked to alcohol that started to change my views. That and the fact that beer started giving me really bad acid reflux about 5 years ago and was keeping me up at night.

I can't afford a barrel, I am not a poor but I am also not a rich 🙃. Each distiller has their own approach to the private barrel market, if I am not mistaken most private barrels are actually sold to distributors or stores, if you buy your own barrel you are buying through the store due to regulations, I might be wrong about that though.

As far as tours go Maker's Mark (a Beam/SGS brand now) has one of the coolest facilities. The Clermont facility for SGS made significant investment in a restaurant onsite a few years ago and their private tours are cool also.

OGD, another SGS brand is distilled in Frankfort and bottled in Clermont, their largest barrel filling location is in between Lebanon Junction and Boston, Kentucky known as the Booker Noe Plant.

Yeah, you have to have a distributor that you work with, usually a store as a partner. I have an acquaintance that bought a barrel for his retirement from the Navy. Partnered with a local store and gave out bottles at his retirement and sold a bunch. But yeah it's around $5-10K depending on the distiller. We did a bunch of tours when we were there. My favorite facility for just being there was probably Bardstown, for ambiance either Castle and Key or Willett, but we didn't do Buffalo Trace or Maker's/Jim Beam. Old Forrester was really cool and we went before Wild Turkey opened their new facility which is apparently pretty bananas. Barrel Thief was one of the more fun ones, since you get to fill your own bottle.

Yeah, just like everything it really depends on how you use it. For me, the 400ish bottles I have will last me until I die, because I just do tastings once a month or with friends whenever. I almost never drink by myself other than smaller tastings (like 3-4 half ounce pours to try new bottles, etc.).
