Absolutely. Think mentally it drained them. You gotta curb stomp up 3-1 and they cowered.

My worry too is they had multiple players have career years hitting. Probably going to be some regression to the mean.

Possible. I think they are still a playoff type roster. I feel they could upgrade front line starting pitching to matchup better in the postseason. Frankly i am not sure anyone can beat the Dodgers that they’ve added some bullpen pieces and Bauer. Maybe they have a 2011 phillies season where in a 5 game series they get surprised but that team is loaded

What do we think the talent gap is between Patrick Surtain, Jaycee Horn, Caleb Farley and Greg Newsome?  I think Newsome is right up there with them but just lacks as much experience and exposure.  Getting him in the 2nd vs Surtain/Horn at 12 would be a much better value IMO.

Corner is definitely a need but I fell 12 is too high for one.  

I think Caleb Farley is the best of the bunch if he's 100% healthy.  We've been burnt by 2 guys who relate to his situation in the past few years though with Sidney Jones and DK Metcalf.  One guy we took despite his injury while the other we didn't take because of his injury.  All reports are that Farley will be good to go and able to play his rookie year unlike Jones.

In regards to Sidney Jones, I don't think he has a body built for the NFL game.  He's rail thin at 6-0 180 (still bigger than DeVonta Smith) so it's safe to question whether or not his body would hold up in the NFL regardless of his achilles injury.  He's recovered from his initial injury but since entering the league he has played a total of 31 out of 64 games.  Even if you take out his redshirt rookie year, he's missed 18 out of 48 games.  It's safe to say, he's an injury waiting to happen and half of that is because of his build.

DK on the other hand has a freakish build and skill set where it was easy to argue that if he's healthy we have a gamer.  We all know the story.  Now he had the neck injury like Farley and he's yet to miss a game in his 2-year career and is a top 5 if not the best WR in the NFL.

Farley is the best CB in this draft.  He's 6-2 207 and built to play CB in the NFL.  He isn't Sidney Jones.  He's not as freakishly built as DK but he's definitely put together.

So does our Sidney Jones experience make us gunshy on the top CB in the draft?  Does missing out on DK make us say we can't miss out on a top talent again because of an injury concern?

I think you could look at the board at 12 and if Horn and Surtain are gone, and there is no clear cut must have prospect at 12 you can trade back hoping to land Farley around 18 or so.  If another team jumps you for Farley and he's gone then you can take BPA at 18 (maybe someone like Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah) and then take Newsome at 37.   

 

You’re not getting Newsome in the 2nd , there will be a run on CBs in rd 1 ,and he will be part of it ,

that being said I think there are some real good CBs to be had after rd 1 .

Farley at his best is at a tier of his own, but the injuries make him such a big risk. So not only is there the fact he has limited experience, but he has both knee and back troubles. He's a no go in RD1.

Horn/Surtain are in the same tier. Newsome is alone in tier 2 for me. Tier 3 are talented incomplete CBs like Stokes, Samuel, Molden, etc. 

I take Gowan all day long in round 2 , but he will end up with a team who plays lots of press man , that is what he does best

Newsome. I like Farley a lot, but he's had two procedures done on his back already and those can be tricky long term.

Definitely  red flag but the one thing about the injury is he did it while deadlifting/cleaning so it wasn't a contact injury from bad form or anything on the field.  

I know hindsight is 20/20 but people had the same concerns with DK.  I think we would all take him now regardless.  I'd hate to see us pass on Farley only for him to be the best CB by far.  I'd also hate to see us take him and have him get hurt. 

DK was a medical risk and he turned out fine.

Schefter saying this the day after Darnold is traded locking in Wilson at #2 overall is not a coincidence.

I dont know, they are totally loaded, and their farm is pretty excellent.. their current guys are young, so even if they regress behind the plate, they have longevity. Braves are a long term threat, they just need to get over the hump

Any guesses on when we will get the schedule release? Probably within the next 10-14 days I would think. 

Continuing CB talk.  How big is the talent drop from the top 4 to Asante Samuel Jr.?

Question is what scheme is Gannon running? If he's going a lot of cover 2/cover 3 with CBs pressing with deep help, then they may not think a top CB is necessary, they can look at guys who are 6'0+ who run in the 4.5 range but can press and tackle, and those are usually available in the 2nd to 4th rds and even some late/UDFAs. In that case, finding a 3 down LB might be just as big of a priority (need two LBs who can cover on passing downs).

Is Farley #4, I dont think its that big of a drop. Really with Samuel, his biggest knock is the size and tackling (just like his old man). Some of the best hips and lateral quickness in the class by my estimation. Decent closing speed, good instincts, looks smooth in and out of breaks. Its the physical part of the game and tackling that sets the 1st round guys apart. His effort in these areas is admirable (for the most part), but he is easily bullied by physical receivers and he always goes for the legs when tackling. When I see samual, I see elite potential slot, with the ability to bump outside.

A guy like Farley does not currently look as polished as samuel, if we are purely evaluating coverage. But the tools are all there=, and he looks good on tape, a good DB coach can mold him into an above average everyday starter on the outside.

It’s hard to get the medical stuff right.  In 2017 Jonathan Allen was a consensus top 5 pick until medical concerns about his shoulder.  Half the league bypassed him, including the Eagles, until Washington grabbed him at #17.

Four years into his career and he’s only missed 1 of 48 games the past three seasons; he had a lisfranc injury in his rookie year but otherwise been completely healthy — and likely a better player than Barnett

Can anyone provide a player who dropped because of injury concerns that had further injuries due to the one they had in college?

You mentioned Jonathan Allen and the shoulder.  He's part of the foundation of that defense in Washington.

DK hasn't missed a game yet. 

Joe Burrow on the other hand didn't miss any games at LSU and had his knee destroyed last year.  Injuries are just hard to get a hold of.

If Caleb Farley is healthy, then I say you pull the trigger at 12 or with a small trade down.
