It's OK that little dream of a real safety this season has been crushed.

I honestly haven't been this excited for a birds season since we finessed TO in 2004.

If Hurts plays his way to the bench this year, they obviously would turn to either Minshew or Strong.  While Minshew is a better passer than Hurts, the gap in running ability means that Minshew doesn’t give them much of an edge to win a game over Hurts.  He also has no meaningful upside.

Just like Hurts as a rookie when Wentz got benched, Strong has value for a 4-5 week stretch to see what he can do.  And if the performance bar to start in year 2 during that 5 week audition is anywhere near as low as it was for Hurts, then he’d have a reasonable shot of starting in year 2.

This team made the playoffs last year and they have spent some big money and draft resources to improve heading into 2022.  This is a team that is trying to make it further in the NFC in the playoffs this season.  If Hurts plays so bad he is going to get benched for that then the team will still be trying to win and will go with a veteran in Minshew over an UFA rookie QB.  The only scenario where the team goes to Strong over Hurts and Minshew is that everything has gone wrong, injuries everywhere and they just can't win any games or do amything.  Games aren't even close, they aren't competitive and might be in the running for the top pick. Only in that all goes wrong nightmare scenario does the team say F it and start Strong because at the very least it will help the tank.

After that draft and AJ Brown this team is officially one that can maybe make some noise in the NFC if they can do something to bring in some starting level talent in at #2 CB and Safety before the start of the season.

That means they need a backup they are comfortable with stepping late season or playoffs if the starter goes down. Only way Minshew is gone now in a trade is if a team gets desperate due to injury and is offering a 1 or 2, or the Eagles sign Foles.  They are not leaving that role to a rookie UFA QB, especially one with major concern over his knee.

Not official yet as the starting QB has to make real improvements in the passing game:

Average more than 200 yards a game passing

Average more than 1TD passing per game.

Improve timing throws

Improve deep passing game.

Rely much less on passing to the right side of the field.

As for safety and CB, I've given up hope.

We wouldn't have made the playoffs if the league didn't expand the wildcard seed

If there was a real QB competition instead of just handing the starting job to Hurts then Minshew or Strong would likely start

Odds Dillard wins the starting RG position?

Wonder should the Eagles pick up Dillard’s 5th year option if the move to G would impact his salary.

I sense that RTK is getting a bit nervous.

Amidst all the hyped up additions, I think there are 2 unheralded young vets whose development and utilization are critical to this team taking the next step: Watkins and Milton Williams.

We don’t really know exactly how good Watkins is.  He has flashed some really impressive afterburners and some truly jaw-dropping plays…but is mostly quiet and non-threatening in the regular season.  Watkins could become irrelevant stashed behind Brown, Smith, and Pascal.  Pascal, if used as the #3, is a very slow WR.  Brown and Smith have nice quickness, but neither is a field stretcher or burner.  If Watkins slides into a seldom-used, predictable, token deep threat in an otherwise fairly slow offense, he won’t be dangerous and the offense won’t be hard to defend, even with Brown.  If he still gets his opportunities, the QB sees him, and he shows that juice, then things could have a much different dynamic.

For Williams…despite all the additions on defense, we are still light on edge rushers and light (as are all teams) on interior DL who can penetrate as a 1-gapper.  With apologies to our new 1st round pick Davis, Williams remains the most unique athlete on the defense.  He has a chance to be special and he really showed it in flashes as a rookie too.  But he also has a chance to be a non-threatening edge who can’t bend and a too small DT who can’t anchor.  It’s critical they find creative ways to maximize his talents.

Not likely very high. He had issues going from LT to RT and has yet to be able to play RT at a high level since entering the league. It’s why we move mailata to RT when lane leaves so he can play LT. I hope he can become a guard but i don’t have high expectations that happens. Frankly i think they’d like it if he could on two fronts: future guard helps and also maybe midseason or training camp trade he has more value if he’s got position versatility.

I wouldn’t be nervous until next offseason if I were RTK.  My entire point with Hurts was that he never earned an opportunity, never earned all this time and patience to develop from a horrible passer to a marginal one.  Non first round pick QBs just don’t get opportunities unless they blow you away (but somehow Hurts clings to a job).

I was the captain of the Carson Strong bandwagon and would love to see him get an opportunity.  But he likely won’t.  He’s a UDFA.  As the Hurts humpers have said, it would take a plane crash.  Or Strong would have to look like prime Peyton Manning in camp.  There is no room for error.  He’d have to blow them away in a fashion that a rookie never could.

A first round pick doesn’t have to do those things.

Dillard is due for his pre-bust ultra hype training camp.  Mcdougle had a couple of those.  Most 1st round busts get that heading into the last year of their deal.

Hurts, Dillard, and whoever ends up with the starting jobs in the secondary will be the focus of many glowing camp reports and fluff pieces.

He'll have to stroke Hurts off under a bridge after they evict him

I pretty sure they declined it a couple days ago

I just blown away by how far off the reservation the blog has gone in its detachment from reality with their delusion about Strong starting this year or next.

The biggest thing for Strong is to get ready to learn and absorb everything right now and for the team to check out his health.  We just need him to be ready at the end of 2022 to throw a wrench in the "extend Hurts" train.  He needs to make himself a viable option between now and then.  We don't need him this year, because Howie is hellbent to stick with the Wildcat. If we get that from Strong, everyone wins with Strong's light contract and Hurts being a QB somewhere in the USFL.

Why? Strong with one leg is still a better passer than Hurts. It's just the truth...and dare I say, the truth Hurts?

BTW I think Jalen Hurts is a great person and teammate, just not a good NFL quarterback.

Carson Strong is an undrafted rookie QB.  This team has Jalen Hurts and Gardner Minshew.  There is 0.0% that Strong wins the starting QB spot this year.  There is also no chance he is the starting QB next year.  If Hurts does not end up taking a step forward this year then the Eagles will either be trading for or drafting a QB for 2023.  They will not be factoring in a 3rd string UDFA QB into that equation.

Was going to hit you with the racist label, but you really saved yourself here.

You keep saying UDFA QB like it means something. With a little more intellectual rigor you might acknowledge that there is a reason for this that has nothing to do with his ability.

Don't be mad. I truthfully hope Hurts can be the man. I just don't think he can. The types of throws Strong demonstrated in college is far and away better than anything Hurts has shown.

I don't think Strong is the messiah, but his ceiling as an NFL passer seems so much higher than Jalen Hurts. This team is only a good, Strong cerebral passer away from another Lombardi...secondary be damned.

Interesting thought. What I’m getting from all this is that Seumalo’s recovery is in doubt.
