If Hurts shows himself not to be the QB going forward after this upcoming season then the Eagles have positioned themselves to be able to make a big move for a QB. There is no chance that next year the Eagles would instead decide to go with their 3rd string UFA QB in his 2nd year as the QB in 2023 instead of either trading for a QB, signing a QB or drafting a QB. If Hurts plays his way to the bench this year, they obviously would turn to either Minshew or Strong. While Minshew is a better passer than Hurts, the gap in running ability means that Minshew doesn’t give them much of an edge to win a game over Hurts. He also has no meaningful upside. Just like Hurts as a rookie when Wentz got benched, Strong has value for a 4-5 week stretch to see what he can do. And if the performance bar to start in year 2 during that 5 week audition is anywhere near as low as it was for Hurts, then he’d have a reasonable shot of starting in year 2.
