I don't think it will take long to see if Hurts has improved.  Both Smith and Brown are excellent at creating immediate separation at the LOS and routinely being wide open on quick slants.  This passing play was one of several that was not utilized last season after Sirianni changed the offense to run the ball.  Hurts just couldn't make the throw on time to the right spot.  For me, with Smith amd Brown at WR this should be a bread and butter play.  If Hurts shows he can get the snap, set, throw quickly to the spot accurately, it will be a sign of improvement.   Make a simple timing throw to get your playmakers the ball in space.

The question will likely become which guy is a sure fire upgrade. I know the prevailing sentiment is Hurts isn't good. And I agree. But for the sake of argument say he runs the O a little better in year 2 of the same system. Not an earth shattering improvement but slightly better. If you have a top 2 pick it becomes easy but if you have picks 15 & 19 say then the decision becomes difficult again

Nah.

I don't even know what 'a little better' means.  BTW, I don't think we'll see the same system from the end of the year last year.  If they run the same run heavy system with the QB running the ball so much by design, just fire everyone.  They don't know how to win in the NFL.  Teams don't invest big money and so many premium picks into the WR position to make them ancillary, rather than central to the team's offensive philosophy.  And if they do, they will not have success.

Yep. The slant is the key route I'll be looking for early on. It has to be out quick and on time, and generally over the middle....if Hurts won't/can't make that throw......see ya later pal.

  I was thinking this as well. I don't think Hurts is a good Qb but some people here act like he ran over their dog or something

And name one person that acts like that in here.

I'm heading out to the woods next week greeny....a week away! And, the forecast is for sunny days all week, with temps getting up 27 degrees C (so...80 F). Unbelievable weather for this time of year, and the black flies won't be out just yet. Also, should be seeing a good amount of moose on this trip!

Yeah I know, I have low expectations too....but there is some small glimmer of hope in me (I'm a pretty optimistic person). I keep going back to the first half of the Denver game last year. Easily Hurts best performance of the season, IMO. The 2nd half was a disaster. But if a guy shows the ability, then it's just a matter of becoming consistent. Problem is he never repeated that performance after. Like I said, I don't expect Hurts to survive....but it would go such a long way for this team if he could.

See that's where ppl are forgetting one thing. Yes he shows a glimmer of passing ability. He's done it since his days at bama. Thing is it's all for NOT considering the guy was benched after reaching a Natty. As much as that gets brought up he was schemed against like he currently is now. Take away his strengths and play up his weaknesses. Problem is you can't be a QB while your weaknesses are all QB essential.

Right, but the 4th guy next year is unlikely to be a no brainer. Obviously if Hurts is bad and the team is bad this year the decision is easy.  But if they win again and are only in position to move up to 8 or so then it's not as clear cut unfortunately

I think 3 firsts and 2 seconds gets us to where ever we need to be to select who we need to select. We will not stay with Hurts if he is slightly better, period.

And if we have to add more draft capital so be it.

I'll be in a canoe with the dog....the moose are generally tame this time of year, just munching away in the river (at least I hope!). I'm also hoping to land some nice lake trout or brook trout, but I'm a terrible fisherman.

Wasn't Hurts a rookie last year?

AJ Brown’s career high in yards is 1000. He’s not going to be able to achieve that in an offense that got DeVonta to 900+?

Our top 3 receivers last year, the average was 797 yards.

Our top 4 receivers last year, the average was 673 yards.

The only way to keep AJ, Devonta and Goedert happy is passing the ball.  If you want AJ to have 1000, Devonta not to take a step back, and Goedert to get his, that is already 3700 yards.  Then you have Quez, the backs, other receivers and TE's, need 4000 passing yards at a minimum.

Funny man. I'd rather wait for a cold day in hell.

I was thinking

is Smith/ Brown potentially the best duo of wide recievers we have had at the same time?

  • In my eyes TO was better than either, but there was a severe talent drop off after that,. He and Pinkston combined for 1,876 Yards and 15 TD's
  • Alshon and Torrey Smith for a brief time in 2017 were pretty good, but only combined for 1,219 yards 11 TD's,  (Even with Agholor added in its still just 1,987 Yards 19 Td's)
  • Williams and Barnett had a good year or two, but no where near this level
  • Maclin and Jackson were pretty good, Best year together 2010 combined 2,020 16 TD's
  • For one year 1996 Fryar/ Chris T Jones were pretty good but forgotten duo, they actually had more yards td's combined in that year than any duo since. 2054 yards 16 TD's combined

And what a shame, when we have had capable QB's we usually lacked WR talent, (save for an odd year or two , 2004, 2017 etc) and now that we finally have really good WR's we lack the QB talent to utilze them.

Such is life.

Cool. Still don’t have a QB at the very least as talented as Wentz

It's like a Greek tragedy. Never will we have both together.

Hurts has a lot of people fooled.

I think these two tweets perfectly illustrate the disconnect between the fanbase on Hurts. Im sorry but you cannot sweet talk your way into me believing you're a great QB. It's easy to buy into Hurts when there are no games being played.

Any pick is going to be a projection but the team will know what they have in Hurts next season.  If he's not significantly more efficient as a passer, he's never going to be an elite QB.  The team will have to make a decision and the question is whether any of those players gives them a better chance.  Nothing is certain with any prospect.

Like we've all talked about, so much depends on what Hurts gives them.  They certainly have the potential to be the best duo but there's also a chance that each is catching 65 passes for 700-800 yards.

Maclin and Jackson were dynamic but you didn't know who might get hurt with those two.

Fryar was surprisingly good here and man I loved Chris T. Jones.  If he played at the Linc instead of the Vet, I'm sure we'd be talking about him being an all-time Eagle.

Talent wise, they have to be at the top.

Let's hope Hurts develops and if he doesn't the Eagles are quick to realize it and move on.
