They’re never gonna be able to trade. I have never said they’re gonna be able to trade them. They’re gonna have to outright release him. Kind of like they did with Castellanos. Kind of like they did with Taijuan Walker. That’s how this is gonna end.

I think that is how it will end as well but I don't think it happens this year. I think they run him out there for six more weeks and if he does not improve he is sent to the back of the pen and becomes an emergency / long relief guy. From there he gets chopped in the off season or in spring training next year. Same difference really.

Yeah except you keep bringing up show me a team that will trade for him? I’ve yet to say that in this discussion cause that’s never happening.

Maybe so but you did mention trade candidates. I suppose you never said you thought it would happen. Fair enough.

I don’t think it’s happening this year either. Because of the $25 mil investment over next 4 years. Phillies are not walking away from that contract until maybe the last year. They simply aren’t going to eat $25 mil per year with 4 years left. I’d be surprised if they do it after this year if this continues. I think he’s here at least til the last year of that contract.

It’s not the same difference cutting him now or next offseason (granted not what you said) because now you are potentially taxing your bullpen for another 6 weeks every 5th day just hoping he’s good. when you already have had some issues with painter (who they still babying in terms of innings) and luzardo. Next off-season I’m guessing he makes it to spring training and he is gonna be on the roster. Imo they are not walking away from $100 million over the next four years. That’s why I’m annoyed by the entirety of it. Cause unless nola turns this whole thing around it’s gonna be the same convo next year too.

Tbh moving nola to the bullpen doesn’t help you or him. he just has that same issues in the bullpen and he’s taking up a roster spot. If you chose to demote banks that leaves you with just 1 LHP. Can do bowlan but frankly he’s in the same role nola would be. But then again i assume Phillies are going to add another BP arm if Alvarado and Keller are going to be this shakey so bowlan is likely the one getting axed. You are actually better off just putting Nola on the IL and calling up/signing/trading for a starting pitcher to replace him.

No one is taking Turner or Nola’s contracts in a trade. They are Phillies version of the Embiid contract. (If released i do think teams would sign for vet minimum to see if they can fix Nola)

Yeah, but you don't get penalized with the luxury tax stuff.

They’re getting taxed regardless. If he’s on IL that tax is coming. If he’s not on the team it’s coming. If he’s on the roster they are paying a luxury tax due to their payroll with him included

It’s the same with Castellanos and Walker. They are paying luxury tax when Walker was here or now that he’s gone. It’s why when Castellanos got released they absorbed $20 mil into the payroll and signed Garcia to $10 mil, i said technically paying $30 mil to RF in 2026 and on top of it the luxury tax on both those contracts

They are paying the luxury tax cause they are a $300+ million payroll for 2026 (which includes guys being here or no longer here).

Phillies have Walker, Castellanos, Garcia, Bohm, Alvarado coming off at the end of the year. About $68 mil so it’ll Drop them into a lower luxury tax. Unfortunately they also have to extend Duran as he’s a FA after 2027 so likely going back up. Add on needing to find RF and 3B.

Mattingly is 16-4 and has Nola on his staff. Think about that.

Not only that but Garcia is .191/.269/.265/.534 with 1 HR over that time. Castellanos-esque like production

Garcia .214/.289/.333/ .623 4 HRs and 14 RBI

Castellanos: .198/.229/.352/.581 3 HRs and 18 rbi

I tried to defend it and be positive about it but I can't anymore he's terrible

This is a scheduled loss right? Backups playing against Burns the ace? What could go right?

In fairness it is 1-1 still if the Phillies defense didn’t suck

True

Could have signed sterling Marte for $1 mil and tevaras for $2 mil and pocketed 7 mil and gotten better production.

Didn’t get a hit since the 3rd inning. Harper was a mess defensively.

Well the good news is we have our ace Elmo going tomorrow…

Tbh beating the reds today would be good in terms of tiebreakers for the playoffs. Currently we don’t own any. Dbacks, cubs own the tiebreaker over us. Both currently ahead of us and cincy is tied with us. Also about to play a 12 game stretch against Cleveland, SD, LA and Sd. Hoping we make it thru that at 6-6. Cause after that the schedule in June isn’t as daunting except for a trip to Milwaukee

Ok, for fun let's set the over/bar for Nola in terms of whether it is a good outing or not. I'm saying 5 innnings and 3 runs is the breakpoint. If he goes 6 and gives up 3 it is an ok outing. If he goes 5 and gives up 2 it is ok. 4 and 3 is no good and neither is 6 and 4. Something like that.

Agreed, I'd like to see at least 5 innings and 3 or less runs basically every time out. For him that would be like an all star level performance given how much he's sucked the past 2 years.
