Official Philadelphia Phillies Thread - Still can't hit for crap

Mick Abel is obviously a work in progress. I'd like to see Painter start a few games.

I wouldn't trade them for nothing. I understand the right veteran outfielder or bullpen arm to justify a top 50-100 prospect may not actually be available. I'm just saying that if they were to be available, I wouldn't hesitate in the slightest. But I wouldn't go out of the way to dump the farm for a random veteran on a hot streak (or one who isn't even that). That's not what I'm advocating for. I just think we have far too high an opinion of the Phillies' prospects.

The only two prospects people are like that are because they’re top 25 prospects in painter and Miller.

Painter didn't pitch in two years. There was always going to be the immediate he feels great and stuff looks nasty. Then there was the period of the dog days of summer which he has had to deal with in 2 years. It’s unrealistic to believe after not pitching in games for 2 years for him not to go through ups and downs.

As for miller is starting to get going again after his injury. Last week he’s hit .353/.500/.647/.1147 (since back from IL .257/.426/.457/.883). Like I said he got hurt at the beginning of June and tried to play through it and didn’t look right. He came back and looked like he missed two weeks the first week. And since then he is now starting to get back to what he looked like before June in May. I said with Rojas he had a similar first 30ish games not looking great in double A then after is when he took off. It was similar to miller until he got hurt.

But again, the player we need and want from a hitting perspective isn’t out there unless you are willing to deal it for Suarez who’s a FA at year’s end and 33 or Duran who’s a LH and tbh not nearly as good as he was in 2024 (not as much of a drop off like Robert his career year to now but drop off is there). for bullpen arms the ability to do that is there: Duran, Miller or Bautista. But not a lot of teams dealing away multiple top 100 prospects it’d take to get those guys for closer/BP arm.

However, this all goes back to Dombrowski should’ve been doing his job in the off-season. It’s why recently you see all of these major trades taking place in November or December. Because nobody’s in a race right then and everybody’s willing to wheel and deal. Because of the extra wild card, the deadline isn’t as effective to complete your team and much hard to do it. It’s why we continue to have top contenders have major flaws as they can’t sure them up unless you build a team Close to completion in the offseason. The players you need to make a trade for aren’t becoming available. Why Dombrowski doing a crap job in the offseason (pissing anway $42 mil on Walker, Romano, Ross and Kepler) and still relying on the deadline to save him should be a fireable offense. The building of a roster isn’t done that way anymore.

Re Santana: he's having a nice year, but he's been DFA'd 4 times by big market teams, most recently just 1 year ago. I just posted how I have little attachment to our prospects, but Santana better come cheap...

I’d prefer Bednar over Santana. Bednar has been good 4 out of last 5 years. And i know he will continue after leaving Pittsburgh. Frankly Santana like you said feels like a ticking time bomb waiting to explode. That said I’m guessing he’s far cheaper than the asking price of Bednar. I’m guessing pirates asking for something like Abel and Tait for bednar

If that’s the projected trade shows you how ridiculous the market is at the deadline. Bednar is basically estevez last year and Santana is basically like Gregory Soto where flashes but never consistent for a long time. yet asking price is a top 100 prospect. Just shows me that Dombrowski this offseason still didn’t understand the greater moves needed to be done then and that the deadline isn’t what it was 6-7 years ago or in the past when he built his title teams.

Again not great ranger’s velocity has yet to top 89 and last time he did it only 3 times all game.

yesterday 3-13 with risp

Today so far 0-3 with RISP

Come on ranger get out of this

It’s pretty impressive that Ranger has been able to do what he has the last two games. He’s hit over 90 miles an hour three times. And hit at least 90 just six times.

of course, I say that, and then he gives up a homerun

Lol yeah he is getting hit now.. ugh

Romano warming up already

At least Sosa has some life in this flacid offense

Im struggling to get through games this year.... I haven't finished a full game yet

I think this goes back to what I’ve touched on the last two starts with Ranger. His velocity is down. The only difference is he hasn’t gotten crushed like he did last year around this time when his velocity dropped. They realistically should skip his next start so we basically get two weeks off until he has to pitch again. But I’m guessing they won’t because Abel is in the minors And they really don’t have anybody else.

Yeah, its concerning that each year he seems to run out of steam early, lose velocity. Outside of that I still think hes so good that DD should make it a priority to extend him. I think that ship has probably sailed though since he hasn't gotten it done yet.

I think the decision was made when they signed Christopher Sanchez to the contract he got. Once that happened I assume that Ranger was gone. It was gonna be one of the two. The thing with Ranger is he runs out of steam because he’s not in great shape. If he got himself into better shape, I think he would be able to sustain the season. But you see him he looks almost identical every single year.

The issue you’re having is because they don’t particularly hit very well. Which makes it harder to watch as they go into a slump for like 10 days where they just can’t hit. The one thing of greatness that you see is that their starting pitching has Wheeler, Sanchez, ranger and occasionally Luzardo. But outside of that, you’re not watching for the bullpen cause you know they’re gonna implode at some point and the offense is inconsistent so you likely tune in and you might get a horrific offensive performance.

Pretty much sums it up.... Ill turn it on to start the game and they wont hit for sheet but, ill leave it on if wheeler or Sanchez are pitching but, once they leave the game and they still dont have any Fn runs i just turn it off.

I get so frustrated with the offense I end up turning it off half the time. It's bad for my health 😂

I know everybody wants them to fix the bullpen. And I would like to get at least one more arm and sign Robertson however, I think it’s way more vital that they go out and get an impact bat that’s a cleanup type hitter. We went the furthest in the playoffs with arguably our worst bullpen. We had our best bullpen going in last year and it got destroyed. So your bullpen could be either real good or real bad depending on the series. But your hitting has been an issue dating all the way back to the diamondback series and even the Astro series. Couldn’t score the last three games of the series against the Astros and against the Diamondbacks in game three, six and seven you 1,1 and 2. To me if you can somehow get a power right handed hitter for the middle of that lineup I actually think their offense would look significantly better.

Yup. I have no confidence that this lineup won't go cold again in the playoffs plus this year they seem to have less power than the previous 3 years outside of Schwarber. Feels like forever since they had a true clean up hitter. In general this lineup needs another power bat.

As much as i hate saying it, they should’ve signed Pete Alonso in the offseason. He was actually the perfect fit especially with hot golf he’s been this year. They could deal for Suarez who fits that mold but he’s 33 and FA at years end. Imo id go after Kyle Tucker in FA but if they can’t get him they really should look back into Alonso and moving Harper to OF

Agreed. I wanted Alonso in this lineup too.

Harper is not looking good

Welp ranger is whining about his back again. Tine to rest him till the end of seeason

His back is the main reason why I wouldn't re-sign him. If I was DD, I would give him the QO. If he signs it, fine, it's only 1 year. If not, they at least get a comp pick out of it.
