Two issues Ranger still has is he is leaving pitches up in the zone. fortunate some of these balls weren’t hit harder that were up. Second he can’t get enough swinging misses to strike guys out. For instance, the walk he had this inning. He’s ahead in the count and can’t find a way to get strike three and walked the guy.

I don't feel to good about ranger for the rest of the season. He looks cooked already

The concerning thing is he’s not able to get strikeouts. He doesn’t have overpowering stuff but if he can’t locate at an high level and get guys to chase he’s going to have issues.

that said the offense has been brutally bad since the first inning.

Well judging by the twins pitcher and how he gets better as the game goes, this might be all the Phillies score tonight.

First inning: 17 pitches

next 4 innings: 45 pitches

This smells like a late inning blown lead

Need help with a quote…heard this many years ago and I recall it being attributed to Roy Halladay.  Always loved its application to baseball and, more broadly, life itself.

It was along the lines of…every year, you’ll have 5 starts where your stuff is unhittable and everything works, 5 starts where nothing works and they hammer everything you’ve got…but it’s how you battle the rest of the time in your other starts when you don’t have your A or your D game that determines what kind of pitcher you are.

Naw Ranger is leaving stuff up and it’s getting hit. His location is still not very good. If they come out of this inning tied or ahead I’d be surprised.

there it is. Like I said, before, not hitting his zones and leaving pitches in places he cannot afford to leave it up in the zone. Which plays into guys aren’t swinging at things down cause they know he’ll leave one up.

You can tell he’s not on top of his game because there’s a ton of flyballs in this game. they haven’t been hit hard enough to do serious damage. But ranger Suarez is not a flyball pitcher. And if he’s gonna leave it up in the zone, guys are just gonna wait until he does that and hit that instead of chasing his pitches that are low. This is been a problem now for like a month. There’s a good chance he’s tired and he needs more time off.  This feels like a fatigue issue. We forget last year he missed the first month and a half of the season. The year before he missed two weeks in June/July and had one start in like 28 days. So he got a bunch of rest. He’s on pace to have a career high in innings and not a career high but shattering it

Every other game since the start of the A’s series has been like this

2 runs

11 runs

3 runs

7 runs

1 run

6 runs

2 runs

Turner not getting the tag on Santana is inexcusable. He had a ton of time move over to better block the base and make the tag and got lazy thinking Santana would just slide into the tag

Didn't they just say you can't block the base anymore?

I should’ve worded it better. Not block the base. But have your glove extebded and not in front of the base waiting on the slide. If he has it extended as he starts his slide, you’re gonna hit him on his helmet and not wait for his hand. With the bases being bigger now there’s more of a chance you can do kind of a swim move like Santana did to beat a glove. That’s just down in front of the base

With your body, you can lay the glove down like that.

The Phillies are starting their run for a wild card spot early this season.

The issue was more with the new bases being bigger you can’t just leave your glove down in front of the base and get the out on the hands. Guys are doing more what Santana did and have a shot at being safe. You have to go and make the tag. Turner wasn’t gonna be called for blocking if he had his glove more out then on the ground in front of the base (technically can make the argument that’s blocking if they were gonna call it). If Turner extends his glove out, it hits Santana‘s helmet as he’s sliding right into his glove.

I still can't stand Turner.... It's an irrational hate lol

In Turner’s defense, prior to them making the bags bigger that is what you are told to do. Because the odds are guys aren’t gonna be able to pull that off on a smaller bag without being tagged first. But with the bigger bag, it’s somewhat possible to happen. It’s why now you see a lot of players lean into the runner when given adequate time to make the tag so they can’t attempt it

Still hate!! Lol. They should make the ball bigger while they are at it!

Marte going back to Leigh valley tomorrow. This is what he looked like last year.

Even so the bigger issue with the Phillies right now is their bullpen since that Marlins’ series has been bad. And they can’t hit consistently. Can’t blame the injuries anymore because everybody’s back. To me you can see since that Rockies series in late May that they haven’t had the same type of crispness and consistency. I don’t expect them to play at a 700+ percentage for the entire year. But since that series they’ve been super inconsistent. Injuries play some of that but they have had issues on offense lately with a majority of the guys are healthy. Like Marchan and Stubbs were hitting as well as realmuto. One game they look like they can’t hit a ball off a t ball stand or the bullpen can’t get outs. Another game they look good.

The only thing that matters is when they get October they better be playing like the best team. Because your record doesn’t mean crap because you could very easily run into a team like the Phillies do to the Braves and lose because you’re not playing your best.
