Granted it’s likely happening anyway. It’s not an issue for Arraez himself. He is going to hit. It’s an issue that Harper and Turner as don’t hit LHP well. Turner has the lowest OPS of a regular vs. LHP at .610 and OBP of .293 (.216 avg). Harper has a .650 OPS and a .328 OBP (.204 avg). OBP is solid but he has also gotten worse over the season against LHP. So Turner doesn’t get on base and Harper as the season has gone on has been less against LHP. Schwarber hits LHP well and incredible OBP. However you’d almost rather schwarber be up after arraez in a playoff spot as a better chance to hit a HR with someone on rather than it be a solo shot atop of the order. Especially with arraez ability to get on base it makes more sense. Then again you have no protection for Harper if you move arraez to leadoff which is the same problem you had prior to this trade as marsh and Bohm aren’t good enoughThen again if Turner hits LHP like he should and they got a RH bat behind Harper that hit LHP it makes this whole point moot as teams would have to pick their poison in bringing in a LHp or RHP.Why the hell is Turner so bad against LHP this year? A random anomaly?Half the benefit of forcing all this left handed pitching should be to breathe life back into Turner's bat. Yet he's hitting it terribly this year.

That is Turner’s worst numbers against left-handed pitching since he got to the Phillies in 23. It’s also his lowest numbers against right handed pitching although it’s not that far off from his normal numbers. with the way he’s been hitting lately that he probably reaches his normal numbers there. I don’t know if he’s taking his fielding into his hitting, but then you would think it would really affect against right handed pitching too, and that’s not nearly as far off from his career norms. Frankly, it’s kind of why they need another middle of the lineup RH bat. It makes it harder to just go LHP then as schwarber, arraez and that bat would all hit LHP well and could spread them out I feel like it’s a team wide issue against left-handed pitching besides Kyle Schwarber and Bryson Stott. shockingly Stott is absolutely destroying left-handed pitching. His slashes are .313/.394/.446/.839. Meanwhile vs. RHP he’s .240/.301/.399/.700. That is below his norm against right handed pitching. Granted some of that is early in April he was terrible and he has been much better since June 1.

August 5Aug 5 Salary cap musing:There is no cap or luxury tax on signing/extending "your players." You home grow stars, you don't get penalized for it and you can keep them all.Every team has a "free agency allotment." You sign away a player in FA, that contract, like a cap hit, has a number for each year of the contract that irreversibly counts against your allotment. If you extend that player to another contract (either before conclusion of the initial contract or at the very end), their original contract counts against your allotment in the aforementioned fashion. But their years beyond that...they count as one of "your guys" again as an internal extension. So if you sign someone to 5 years $20mm per year....that never goes away, no matter what you do. But after 5 years, if you sign them to another contract, it doesn't count. If you extend or cut them after 3 years, you still get the 5 year 20mm hit. Beyond the 5 years, the extension is capless, as they are one of "your guys."Trades...well...trading parties can negotiate/toggle who gets stuck with the allotted FA dollars, which will impact compensation. Trading home grown players with expiring deals from small to large market teams...who could then extend a "our guy" contract free of the cap allotment is a potential loophole. But you could just stipulate that any extensions of deadline deals counts against the allotted FA $$$.It's a capless system that still allows teams to push the limit on player salaries. But it completely eliminates the ability of one team to go rogue and buy a roster. The weakness with that model is some sort of contract term manipulation. Signing players to shorter deals 1-2 years and then extending them in the capless "our guy" model for huge money. Might need a vesting period or something.Players may hate it because it introduces an unprecedented penalty for rich teams if they miss in free agency. Can't just burry those mistakes and costs with an unending well of funds. Suddenly, EVERYONE becomes very scrupulous with big FA deals. The other side of that coin is that teams, ideally, open the checkbook far more liberally with extending their own players. There simply would be no excuse to let a good player walk outside of major interpersonal drama.

That's actually the biggest reason I favored moving him to the OF. Aside from the fact that it's his best long-term destination (with 1B for Harber)...and aside from the fielding issues we face at short....most importantly, it gets one of the most talented bats on the team out of a pressure cooker of a spot in the field that is clearly distressing him. Park him out in RF to clear his head and maybe mentally isolate more on hitting. I think it would be better for Turner as a hitter.

There’s no way they’re gonna keep them at shortstop. It’s likely going to be Stott at shortstop and arraez if they re-sign him. No clue what they do at 3B. Might be someone like paredes or a trade. I think the reason they didn’t wanna move him back to the outfield right now is because of how his bat has looked over the last 40 games. So don’t want to screw with his swing right now or take him out of his comfort zone with how good his hitting has been. Add on he hasn’t played the outfield since 2016. That’s 10 years ago. Even moving Bryce to the right field it’s only been five years, which is a lot. A decade is an eternity. I think throwing him out there randomly mid-season is not the way to do it. They tried that with Sosa and he had multiple games where he was bad.

They don’t play a playoff team until the last game of August at dbacks. The issue is they’re gonna get the September and that part of their schedule might be the hardest part of their schedule. there’s a good chance they’re gonna face 18 of 24 teams that are playoff team teams.

August 5Aug 5 Arraez is realizing he's gonna have to be responsible for every run on this limp D team
August 6Aug 6 14 minutes ago, devpool said:Arraez is realizing he's gonna have to be responsible for every run on this limp D teamFrankly, they needed two bats at the deadline. In previous years, they really only needed one that was a middle of the lineup guy. This team really needed to one at the top to get on base and another that is a power hitting right handed bat in the middle. They got one of the two which would’ve been good enough a couple years ago. But right now.
