Some examples of excellent Quez catches from last year.

ABOUT 0:58, coming back in to a defender for an underthrown ball, makes catch through contact.

1:42 dives back in opposite direction and plucks the tipped ball way out away from his body as he is going to the ground.

2:04 hes not in the end zone, but he makes the grab reaching over the defenders back and controls it to the ground. Impressive incompletion.

3:36 come back route along the sideline. Has to go up for the ball. Manages to come down both feet in bounds with a defender right on his back.

4:47 deep ball arrives at same time as defender. Watkins comes down with it with defender on his back.

 

I didnt pay attention the first time around, but I bet youd find a lot of his highlights came on 3rd downs. 

He has definitely flashed good body control, and ability to come down with tough grabs.

I maintain that he has done more of it this year, even in clutch situations. But the fumble, and INTs where he failed to box out stand out in peoples mind. 

I still feel he is a Darnell Mooney level player with more opportunity (and proper usage to fit his skill set). Thats a borderline #1, and an excellent #2.

I like Watkins.  He has flashes of number 1 type potential.  I sometimes question how he is utilized by the Eagles.  He seems to struggle fighting through contact on routes and in running after the catch. If you watch him vs. Smith after they catch the ball, you can see how Smith is able to glide through hits whereas Watkins does not fight well for yards.  He hasn't been as productive on screen passes this season.  They have also used him for over the middle throws where  he does not do well fighting for the catch.  He's good on shallow crossing drag routes if he's open.  He's good at deep crossers getting space. He isn't good when he has a DB on him and getting to his arms.  I wonder if part of it is him not being able to settle down in zone coverages at the right spot.  He had 600 yards as a number 2 receiver last season.  He only has 10 less catches but  has 300 less yards.  So he's not being utilized in the same way.  He is a good receiver.  The Eagles should keep him and there's no reason to upgrade with some veteran.  I do hope they look for better ways to use him.

There hasn't been any Sixers buzz this year so far, it feels kinda dead. I don't know if that's because the Phillies and Eagles have taken all the attention, but I also feel like two years of back to back major playoff disappointments and the city is kind of over the Sixers right now until they prove they can get out of the second round. A year ago there was a buzz when the Sixers traded for Harden that lasted to the playoffs, but ever since the playoffs ended it, feels like the energy was drained out of the city and it'll be hard to get it back.

Just a heads up, at some point in the near future the board will be offline for a short period of time while it's being upgraded.

Edwin tells me that once he completes the upgrade, the board will be A LOT more useful and interactive. I'll post a thread ahead of time so that you'll know when the work will begin.

Youve probably seen the 1st half of season split vs 2nd half of season for Smith bpac posted.

They were using Smith wrong early this season. He was being used as a possession WR getting all short stuff with no RAC opportunities. And Watkins was seldom used at all. If he was, he was a deep ball guy or screen guy. He excels as a deep ball WR. Has had mixed success as a screen guy. Does well in intermediate stuff down field.

They ended up fixing their usage of Smith. He started getting the WR screens, which he is better than Watkins with this year. But he also started getting more down field stuff. On the flip side, Watkisn got the possession WR short suff, and quite frankly sucked at it. Allowed 2 or 3 interceptions in that role by doing a bad job shielding his defender away from the ball.

 

Watkins in the Doug Gabriel  role in Buffalo is a breakout star as a #2. Watkins in the Mooney role on a bad team is a breakout star as a #1 on a weak team. As such, Watkins is a phenomenal talent as our #3 WR who is actually the 4th or 5th option on offense. IF used on the proper routes. His success cant come at the expense of Smith's. And with Smith successful they cant ask Watkins to do stuff hes not good at.

Coaches have to figure out how to use them both to their strengths simultaneously. OR, replace Watkins with a bigger possession WR in the slot.

But I think people are really wrong when they are down on Watkins as a player.  I think hes really, really good and the coaches are failing him here.

But it needs to be done to fix some issues and also allow some other things to be done.

It should, but I can't say until it's done. But I haven't noticed anything not embedding properly (for me), in a long time.
