I’d say not. If you’re spending over 7 hours a day driving a minimum of 70 mph to get that easy 500 miles per day… you ain’t spending much time selling anything as it is…

It’s comforting to see that you’re as ignorant about this as you are about everything else.

Oh yeah? Like math?

70 mph x 7 hours = 490 miles

Can't wait to hear about it after the election. I bet it's gonna be lit.

Poors often have two jobs, or work extra hours, and most certainly do not stop for coffee on the way home. Unless they want to stay poor. If work is a commute it doesn't work at all.

Say they live close to work. Before i moved i was about 10 miles from my job. My car got in the mid 30s for "city" gas millage. Why bother? I'd fill it every 2 weeks. Not worth the bother for a EV at that point, just get a small economy car.

Like I said, out of touch. Sounds nice.

I wish I was more musical.

Ok, great.  Then wouldn't this be an exact scenario to buy a car at an affordable price that doesn't require gas?  Because you DONT put a ton of miles on it and can EASILY charge with a trickle charge overnight to have plenty of range daily.

Also it occurred to me over the weekend that the meme didn't account for your range of knowledge and has been updated accordingly.

I gave one example of how to make it work with a daily routine.  You also know there are parking spots that you can charge your car while running an errand.

I know this blows kills your "trickle charge isn't good enough for folks", but now that you brought up a point I was waiting to, that most people don't drive even close to the total range on a daily basis, and the fact there are other ways to occasionally make up the deficit if you far too far behind.....

ya...but they still owned a Chevy Bolt.  Nobody wants to admit to that.

Oh no doubt.  If you don't care about style and want affordable, is a good option.  But if you want something nice, gas OR EV, you are going to $$$.

That's only a gas estimate.  You also save on maintenance every year.

And in 5 years or so when you need to replace the battery, wait until you find out what that costs...

Two things. First, we make long trips in the summer over here which is when we do 80% of all our driving. Second, we want a car we can keep for 20 years. I guess the speed of charging could also solve the problem if it were to improve enough. Anyway, we aren’t talking about a commuter car in our situation. We take the subway into town.

Teslas are close now. Might go for one of those. I've just wanted to wait until the tech reached a spot where I thought we could buy and then keep a car for 15-20 years.

Gotcha.  Yeah, if we are to do a trip like that, we would have to stop at a level 3 charger along the way.  A bit of a pain but sort of similar to needing to stop to gas up on a road trip.  When doing a long trip I can't think of a single gas stop where we just gas'd and go.  Usually someone hits the bathroom, buys a cold drink, etc, while gasing up.

One thing I'm really curious is to see firsthand what a car with over 200 mile range actually gets on the highway.  The faster you go, the more you work the engine and drain the battery due to the fact electric motors don't have gears.

Projections are the battery’s will lose up to 30 percent of capacity in 10 years.

Curious where you saw that since I've read so many different things.  This one I thought was interesting.

tl;dr:

This all proved that the pack delivered just over 67 kWh. When the car was new, it had about 75 kWh of battery capacity. So, the total loss at over 100,000 miles is around 10 to 11 percent.

Now that is based on mileage, not time.  I'm also to see how they fair in cold vs moderate vs hot climates over 10 years.

Yea but filling up a tank of gas is a hell of a lot quicker and easier than charging up a car.

Depends on the charger.  On the road you'll likely hit a level 3 charger, which has a rate of 3 to 20 miles per minute.  The charge rate depends on how empty your battery is, the lower the charge, the faster the charge rate.  So in theory you can add 100 miles in 5-6 minutes.

Sales guys like me can do 500 miles per day easy, and we don’t have 30+ minutes to stand around waiting for a charge.

Throughout the day, do you ever park in a lot that has a charger when you go into a sales meeting?  Realistically that's the only way for someone in sales to make it work IMO

Just drink 3 cups of coffee and you are good to go, until you get maybe 20 miles down the road and have to ish yourself.

When my wife had the Model S, we took it up to her parents a few times. The trip is a little over 400 miles, and we generally had to stop 2x at a Supercharger. Once is doable -- you get lunch while it charges. The second one is annoying. If we did it with one stop, the car was all but dead by the time we got to her parents. And no -- you don't get the same mileage while speeding on I-5.

Now that I have the Taycan, her car is a hybrid so we can use that for any longer trips if need be. But we really never drive long distances.

Monty Python for the WIN.

I really haven’t looked into electric cars at all, but do that have universal charging ports/plugs?  Like, could you take a ford to a Tesla charger, for example?

Also, is there a good comprehensive resource for finding charging stations along your route if you’re traveling?  I’ve thought about getting a third car rather than putting gas in my truck all of the time for our local errands and weekend trips to visit family, but I have no idea whether EV would be practical for it or not. And I’ll admit this is all a pipe dream anyway because I am not really interested in having a $20k+ third car, but maybe in a few years when I can pick one up used…

Well I guess Biden was right, If you didn't vote for him, you aint black...  (Guessing Thomas did not vote for Biden)

Tesla and everyone else use two different level 2\3 chargers.  But they make adapters.

As for the finding on your route, my (theoretical) mustang lets you put in the destination, calculates your estimated range and automatically routes you to an optimal station on your route.  I imagine Tesla is the same.

Yeah, any trip that approaches 500 miles one way, I'm not driving.

I think the thing that is going to hurt EV adoption is going to be the lack of cheap, used cars.

EV batteries only have a limited life, and they are super expensive to replace.

Even if you figured out a way to efficiently rehab and replace them, used cars are still going to run you at least $20K.

This is really going to hurt poor people if they ban conventional gas-powered cars.

Also, EV's go through tires like crazy.... Because they're so bottom heavy and have high acceleration rates, you really burn through tires.... crap like that is going to add up.

Anyone: Here is an example that's not and it's not ideal, how you can get around it

Dumb JT: He said coffvveve!!!!!

Also, you literally proved that trickle charges CAN work for most people since they drive no where near the range of the battery, let alone what could be charged on a level one charger over night, but keep focus on coffee to deflect from your constant fail

It wouldn't work for a commuter.

From Ford giving a warranty of 8 years/100k miles of the battery falls below 70 percent capacity. They didn’t pull that number out of thin air.
