Soccer isn't a rich person's sport

Club soccer in the US absolutely is. It doesn't need to be. It shouldn't be. But it is.

Lack of turnovers. Only one I have an issue with is Ward’s placement that high. But honestly there is a huge gap between Surtain and all the rest on the list.

Somebody email this to Patullo

Soccer is not cheap here, that's the whole discussion

Edit: what kid is buying their own helmet and pads for high school football?

I don't think the cost is a barrier at the entry level for players. It is probably a barrier for players that would develop if they had more intensive training at younger ages. High School soccer coaches also are not typically developing talent for colleges. That's all done through clubs. So if you're not playing at a young age at a highly competitive level, then your'e not going to get that training. I am not sure how much of a difference that makes for the top end but I am sure it impacts the pool of players. Football, basketball and to some extent baseball are so dependent on raw athleticism, it's not a barrier if a player hasn't played at a high level before high school.

None. Point being... soccer doesn't have to cost money. You get a ball, you can play soccer. And you can play for your school, just as early as you can football. Cleats for football aren't generally paid for by schools for football or soccer. All the pads? For football, schools buy that, but club teams? I don't think so, they need a lot of money. But, football teams have boosters. I'd suggest any big soccer fans in the US that want to see soccer grow here start some booster clubs to fund youth soccer, just like football teams have.
But soccer really doesn't require big bucks to play. Get a ball, nothing more really required. Pretty much the same equipment list as basketball. The next requirement is a place to play. Need a hoop for basketball... need a field for soccer. Fields and empty areas that are big enough are harder to find in poorer neighborhoods... but if they have a place to play football, they have a place to play soccer. If there's a place to play baseball, there's space to play soccer. Work out the schedule so that both can use the field.

In essence, all you need is a ball and some trainers to get going - what we call over here "jumpers for goalposts" down the local park. It shouldn't and doesn't need be expensive

But equally, McDonald's and Coca Cola (yes, there is some irony there) have schemes were they do basic skills training in primary schools aligned with the FA (I think) to help catch those kids who may not be pushed at home to do it.

You're missing the point. In the US, you aren't going anywhere in soccer if you don't play one of the travel leagues that cost thousands of dollars. They aren't scouting high schools and colleges, they're scouting those leagues.

With football, baseball, and basketball, you don't have to join a special league. You can just go to high school and college and make it from there.

So yes, it costs maybe $30 at Ross to literally play soccer in a field. But if someone seriously wants to play pro soccer in America they're going to lay thousands of dollars from age 7-8 through age 15-16

Now what?

So they gave the Flyers a big FU waiting 6 days to agree to something that they could have agreed to within minutes? The spite is real!

Think they put an offer sheet in on Fantilli?

Sounds like you have a calling to become a booster or try to change the system. But, I've spent my allotment of time talking about soccer for the rest of the decade, so I'm out.

You miss 100% of the shots you don't take.

Flyers with yet another disappointing and underwhelming offseason. Unsure what they could’ve done but still. Wonder if they go after Fantilli or just kick the can down the road yet again for 1C.

IMO, interceptions are highly overrated unless you've got an Ed Reed type that truly, reliably generates them. And to be clear, they are overrated as a DB stat, not as a defensive play.

I'd argue most interceptions are generated by the pass rush forcing bad throws or unforced QB errors, not DB's truly creating them.

The real job of a CB is to not yield in the passing game. I'll take that over a few fluke interceptions.
