I know the start of camp inherently brings a sense of optimism. But I am feeling really good about this season.

We have a ton of talent and our GM won't stop trying to improve the roster. We are pretty healthy at this point. Hearing all the right things from the locker room. And the schedule is very favorable.

Yep. Managing the Eagles actual cash flow must be a tough job because of the lots of cash up front deals the team does.

I wonder how they actually phase the payments to players because I don't assume there are hundreds of millions of dollars just sat in a bank account ready to go.

100%. Steichen brought enough wrinkles to the table to cement the team as a contender. Everyone else after that IMO had some pretty big warts. However coming in to a contending team vs building from the ground up is IMO a lot harder. Johnson wasn’t nearly as bad as some paint him. The O, before the collapse of the D was capable of carrying the team. Moore came in and did nothing too fancy, and then scaled back when they were ineffective, then 2k Barkley and a D that hit it’s stride after the bye carried the team till late in the season. After that Moore earned his HC gig…especially with the SB. We had almost 10 weeks of the D standing on their head waiting till Saquon broke one. Patullo…well he sucked mainly at playcalling. I’m not even sure we got to see the true offense because he got maybe 1 out of 10 play calls in in time to set up, motion, audible, hot route, etc.

Nick is the constant, he seems to have been in favor of a conservative and methodical approach. Grind games out with conservative playcalling, while being aggressive and swinging games with decision making. The success of the tush push really ruined the team, to the point where they openly admitted they played to get to 3rd and short/4th and 1.

Option bonuses - paid before week 1. So instead of a salary paid over 18 weeks, they get basically all of it upfront. Every contract has a league minimum salary. By paying an option bonus lump sum, the Eagles can spread the cap hit over 5 years. As an example - Hurts gets a $50.285mm option bonus this year before week 1, and his salary is the league minimum $1.215mm. So 20% of that bonus hits this year's cap (~$10mm) + his salary ($1.215mm) + hits from his prior bonuses (~$20mm). So while he gets $51.5mm in cash, his cap hit is only ~$32mm. The cap hits are so low in the first couple years since there's only a singing bonus and maybe one option bonus. Now, you have Jalen's 2023 singing bonus ($23.3mm total) putting $4.7mm on this year's cap (spreads over 5 years from 2023-2027), 2024 option bonus ($38.875 total, $7.8 each year from 2024-2028) and 2025 option bonus ($41.33 total, ~$8.3mm per year from 2025-2029). That's $20.7mm + 1.215mm salary + $10mm for this year's bonus = just under $32mm cap number.

Using void years allows us to spread bonuses for 5 years even though there aren't 5 years left. This is why it all accelerates when the contract voids.

This amortization game allows us to spend a LOT more cash than the cap since we defer charges. Since the cap goes up every year, it's like borrowing money at a negative interest rate - the deferred amounts are a smaller % of the cap in future years.
