Dalton basically blames Mannion and his offense for the struggles.

That’s slightly a reach. He’s just saying they were throwing curve balls in spring training.

No reps on IR and both of those players need reps. So it is 53-man or else.

Mailata did a year on IR. They can still go to team meetings and whatnot, Bernard needs to learn the game. Wouldn't hurt weru either

The only thing I look for in preseason is whether anyone flashes as better than expected or stinks badly enough to cost themselves a roster spot. The Eagles D allowed too many rushing yards through the middle, but it’s all backups out there so hard to make much out of it. The best result is one where there are no injuries.

They did make the Ravens QB3 look good enough that Huntley might be back out on the street, though.

Preseason isn't what it was 20 years ago. It's evaluating backups and practicing basics, especially with a new offense. Siri especially, trusts what he sees from starters in practice, and joint practices to him are for starters the same as preseason.

Every year fans complain and overreact to preseason with backups. Every year they start slow in regular season.

And every year under Siri they've made the playoffs.

Siri had the 3rd string in there early in the 2nd half.

He's not worried about the top 35-40 players, he wants enough film to evaluate the cuts, and who they want on the PS.

It's not just kids they like, they need a half dozen veterans who showed enough that they could promoted them in case of injury to backup the new starters.

Bernard and Weru got their first NFL snaps, and Payton showed what he can do (and do wrong).

The NE week is key for the starters, they probably won't play more than a quarter of actual games.

The backups get the PT, the locks start the first half, the question marks start coming in the 2Q.

Remember, a lot of teams want to win these games to sell tickets, Eagles don't have that issue.

They don't care if they get blown out in preseason as long as they get film to make evaluations of players with limited NFL snaps or veterans who may or may not have any juice left.

Johnson, Kendall, and Bell are pretty much locks, Lampkin, Majors, Morris in the running, Hinton, Williams headed to PS at best

Calcaterra on the bubble, Shipley showed burst to keep his #3 spot, Cooper #4, Young, Hall, Robinson fighting for 2 or 3 spots, the two veteran DEs stayed ahead, Trotter breathing down Campbell's neck but Mondon just doesn't look like an ILB.

Ringo's nice Int doesn't make up for his grabbing play and poor hips. The other CBs, other than McWilliams, who was alright, have little chance.

Few thoughts on the game...

The backup CBs who sucked last year are still not good.

They have depth on the lines. Some are young and growing but there are reasons to be excited, especially if they have the RT of the future.

Like I said earlier the offense will take time. No reason to panic. KM took weeks to adjust and he is a good OC. It's to be expected.

"The whole season will be a work in progress”

Nick, I have a feeling if that’s the case you’ll no longer be here.

Someone broke Tanner McKee. Since his game last year he is sailing balls over WRs heads. He used to have excellent accuracy placing balls in windows. Hoped that game was a one off but he repeated it last night. Something is off.

I can definitely foresee a scenario where Bell is the most productive pick from this draft class.

Yeah idk what happened. That game in 24 against Dallas he looked like he should have a shot to start for another team. I assumed Moore in NO would try to trade for him.

Dude, it's the preseason with backups in a new offense that doesn't want to show anything. They probably have variations of 5 plays for the entire game. Means nothing

It means something. They still have to execute and they didn't

Payton did nothing but scramble a few times and hit a guy wide open in the endzone. Let’s pump the breaks on him. He looked very small

Yup.

He looks composed given it’s his first NFL action and he was dealing with chaotic situations.

Obviously it’s early, but I think we might have something there.

Honestly outside of the TD pass, his other pass attempts were terrible terrible decisions. Threw into triple coverage multiple times. Kid has a long way to go. He doesn’t lack confidence though.

Kid had some juice though. Definite athletic ability. Probably worth keeping around to see if he can develop to replace mckee next yr

Or this year

My guess (as I didn’t watch last night) is he’s sped up - mechanical issues like not following through with either the throw or his footwork to get the ball out quicker will lead to overthrows. Last season running the 2nd team vs starters is a challenge (especially when they seemed to run out of plays and resort to repeats quickly), can’t say what the problem was last night… I assume his OL was outmatched, and it’s gotten into his head. As a non-running QB, he’s got to be sharp or he’s selling life insurance.

It means they had a bland list of plays and backups are backups for a reason. The starters will take a few games as well. Anyone who freaks out when that happens doesn't understand that either.

Not really. He looked excellent through 2 pre-seasons, and in a regular season game. He has only looked bad in his most recent regular season game, and this pre-season game 1. The suck is brand new for him. Something broke.

I think in the past our 2nd team, 3rd team OLs typically out-executed their preseason competition - which keeps the QB cool and collected. New system, new coaches… bad results.

He wasn’t that good last preseason as I recall either.

hmm... I recall differently but you may be right.

some quick takes on individual performances from tommy

Mailata said last night that the OL doesnt have to think, they just have to beat the man in front of them. More evidence of going back to a Castillo style OL. Makes the Bell pick make sense since he isnt the athlete we are used to seeing the team value.

last night, I felt really good about our OL and DL depth, LBs. RBs are good. Hoped someone would push Shipley but no one did and he looked good enough for RB3. He has really looked good in most of his opportunities with last years very limited opportunities being the exception. Hopefully he is putting the yips behind him.

Knew CB depth sucked.

Safety is interesting. Carter didnt stand out. Epps didnt dress so apparently is the starter. He is injury prone, and mid when healthy. Pulley had a productive game. Wonder if he can win a spot.

Wish we had an exciting WR to watch in pre-season. We never do. But Smith, Wicks, and Lemon will be solid to good, and Cooper and Moore will make solid backups.

Moves for Howie to make-

CB depth. Is Jackson still available or did someone sign him? Should be priority 1 if available.

S starter- trade if available

TE- bring back Wright at least for a pre-season game and see if he makes any plays. No one made any plays last night. Watch camp cuts for someone with upside.

WR- watch camp cuts for someone with upside.
