Not surprising. Last week people were debating drafting JJAW 7 years ago.

Same here, really the only sport I can watch anymore is football and that is coming close to being unwatchable. Glad to see the 6ers beat the Celtics though.........

All the 3s have ruined the NBA in my mind. I did really enjoy watching it last night given the context of Game 7 and the Celtics but it just isn't as much fun as it used to be. College basketball has taken an even bigger drop back when players only play 1 year or xfer plus too many 3s.

Tbh if they all lose it might be better you didn’t watch. Could be a blessing in disguise lol

He does it more than Tatum. Both of them are bad with it. It used to be could do a little forearm to create some space but it’s turned into full arm extension to create space which is ridiculous. It’s now essentially just basically pushing your defender and they do it a lot cause it only gets called 1 maybe 2 times in a game. Even when it does the complain about it

Oh, I'm not doing any of it. :P And I'm sure the leagues won't make it open source either. Do you think they will?

The 3 point shooting started around the time of the warriors run. It did start a little prior but took off then. Imo an issue the nba has is that but also guys are resting more to stay healthier for the playoffs and/or longevity of their career. Some of it is tanking teams but really those tanking teams aren’t usually winning with or without those guys sitting. they are now adding another 2 teams to a league where there’s already 8-10 teams at beginning of the season you know aren’t winning anything. I don’t think they have necessarily a tank issue but they have not enough stars to elevate a franchise to make the true contenders. They just don’t have enough and if they do they take 2-4 years to develop into that so they aren’t very good til down the road. Frankly I kind of think the NBA if they wanna just get rid of tanking, just say everybody who misses the playoffs has the same odds for 1, 2 and 3. And then goes by record after that’s decided. Having this 4th worse team gets better odds then 3rd worse is going to cause teams to still tank enough but not fully tank. I feel like it’ll be a mess too

As for college, I talked to a couple coaches out here. The problem they have is the NCAA never really put out a plan for the portal with NIL. Everyone knew it was coming and the ncaa did a horrific job with instituting it. Became the wild Wild West. They really should’ve had a plan knowing that day was coming. They have some rules implemented since That had helped but still not enough. They really need a cap of how many years you can enter the portal and not this I’m a free agent every year. Now it’s guys bolt year after year so retention is vital. Most schools have issue with that besides really big 10, SEC, blue blood programs (however even Kansas had some issues this offseason) who have the money. It’s also hurting the mid majors. It’s why less mid major upsets this year. The great mid major players transfer when they are still hot and cash in and mid majors usually can’t develop and keep up as fast so you are seeing less and less runs in the tourney by them.

Don’t get me started on them going from 68 to 76. That’s a ridiculous money grab cause i don’t need to see 16-14 Auburn in the tournament

The NBA 3 actually started way back in 1979 so way before the Warrior run but yeah it really became a thing in a big way with the Warriors. They didn’t plan for it but has taken over the game to an unhealthy level. I’ve always said I wanted two quarters with the 3 and two without. I think it would go a long way to balancing things out.

Totally agree on the college thing. Not sure there is a good solution. Kids deserve comp but that then changes things.

Obviously it wasn’t invented with the warriors run. It became the new era of nba in terms of how teams Played with Steph a that warriors run. That really is when the nba of today began. They’ll never do that. I’d just move the 3 out further. If you move it out then it’ll make it much tougher as majority of guys in the nba aren’t great at consistently hitting if you back it up even more. Another 2-3 inches back would change the dynamic more.

My issue with college players is not getting paid. I hate every year they get to be a free agent. I’ve liked the proposed 5 for 5 rule. You get 5 years regardless so you avoid having to ask for redshirt years whether medically or freshman. Which the NCAA has been terrible ant implementing or doing in a timely manner and it winds up screwing some teams. I also like you get one transfer where you don’t have to sit out. If you make that transfer then if you leave a program (unless coach is fired or moves on) then you have to sit out for a year if you enter the portal again.

How can that conceivably help? All it does is introduce uncertainty.

Is that a go pro on Cole Payton? That’s new

I've yet to see any reasonable argument against the proposal. In any case, if you're going to move it back then move it back a foot. IMHO the change should be significant on the game and not just marginal.

Yeah right and I agree. However, once the money is in play it adds an element of enticement for players to xfer that was never there before. I think the only way to combat the issue is to limit the number of xfers per year and some management of pay in terms of caps or max cumulative pay. Players can all sign on a players' agreement just like in the NFL so that the numbers can stick legally.

The league can open it up allowing others to use the software but not change the version the league is using (at least not without any changes going thru the league). This setup is fairly common in the software industry.

The idea for this particular situation would be to create transparency from the league.

It needs to be enough that the analytics change to where shooting a bunch of 3s at a lower percentage isnt still more rewarding than 2 point attempts at a higher percentage.

But you have to ask yourself what the game becomes when the 3pt line is taken away. With the length and athleticism of today's athletes it has become really easy to just defend inside the arc. And then teams cant score. Will that be a good product?

No one would ever admit this either because its like common knowledge now that Curry changed the game, but thats not really true. Steph Curry gets all the credit for revolutionizing the league with his 3 point shooting. He was drafted in 2009. But it started before him. Steven Nash won back to back MVPs in 2005-2006 spearheading that 7 seconds or less offense for the Suns. Steven Nash, Joe Johnson, Quentin Richardson, Sean Marion, Leandro Barbosa and Smush Parker all took a heck of a lot of 3s.

The next year they added Tim Thomas, Eddie House, James Jones... all could shoot it. Even Boris Diaw would hit 3s. Not all of those guys were the greatest shooters either, but they fired at will.

Shane Battier was also known to be an analytics guy during his playing career, and it was a story at the time how he converted Chris Bosh from a traditional post player with Toronto, to a stretch 4/5 with Miami by explaining the math to him. Those were the early days of the transition. Battier went from consistently around two 3pt attempts per game in 05-06 and prior, and doubled it to 4+ attempts when he went to Houston (Darryl Morey GM, analytics guy). Then helped spread the knowledge in Miami.

That analytics knowledge began before Curry was even drafted. D'Antoni and Nash ran that offense in Phoenix, Morey was converting his teams in Houston, and THEN Curry was drafted.
