EMB Blog: 2026 Regular Season (Part 1)

Okay. I'm gonna be a troublemaker here. But I do remember a time when it was stated in here that AJ was gonna be on this team til the end of 2026 because of his cap hits. That narrative seemed to change pretty quick once it became obvious he wasn't coming back, which I had stated for a long time before all of that, that he wasn't coming back.

I would point out. They only moved AJ Brown because they could do it after June 1. The only way you can get off of Jalen hurts contract without completely destroying your cap along with a dead money is to move him post June 1. And really has to be a trade which he’d have to drop his NTC. I’m gonna say it’s much harder at the quarterback position to move a guy post June 1 than it is a wide receiver. Especially a guy who has a NTC

Just go look at his contract prior to June 1, there’s no way they’re taking a $43million cap it along with $85 million in dead money to trade him. If they just release him it’s 65 mil cap hit and 107 dead money. That’s not realistic. Even wentz wasn’t remotely that bad and he basically forced them to trade him.

Herbert for Hurts June 2nd confirmed.

He has the last 2 games as the cast has been reduced. Dominated the Jags, and was double teamed almost every snap against Carolina.

And I told you and others over and over again it had to be a post June 1 trade, which was the case.

It's no different with Jalen.

Math, is in fact, math.

EDIT: I wasn't sure another team would wait until June 1, after OTAs and the full offseason. Luckily NE was that dumb. But for a QB, moving someone post June 1, after the whole offseason, is a much harder sell.

OK - show us how the Eagles create enough cap room to move off Jalen before June 1, 2027.

Is there a reason it has to be before june 1st? Are you in a hurry? I just don't see them trotting him out there after this. That would be insane.

Just now, vikas83 said:

The only ways to move off Hurts are a post June 1 trade like AJ, or cut him and designate him a post June 1 cut. But...you can't cut a player that hasn't passed a physical, so...

He's here in 2027. There's no other choice. They don't have enough cap room to trade him before June 1.

I think he was here in 2027 anyway. They weren't (and likely still won't) going to pass up a QB they really like in the 2027 draft. But that's not synonymous with Hurts being gone.

Hurts and Wentz co-existed in 2020 and the brass wanted to keep Wentz in 2021 until he forced he way out.

Fair or not, and excluding cap ramifications, they take a huge PR hit now if they kick Hurts to the curb this offseason.

FWIW, Hurts should be able to pass a physical by June 1. At this point, there is misinformation piled on misinformation piled on misdirection piled on hyperbole about his condition...but he technically should be well off anticoagulation and ready to pass a physical by then. Would the Eagles risk the shlt storm of unloading him shortly after he gets healthy? No.

I am not gonna give you a hard time here. But I do remember the blog assuming it was ironclad that he was here regardless, til end of 2026 season and Eagles were not gonna eat the cap. That's all.

Wentz was 20 months into a 4 year $128 million dollar deal. Everyone said the exact same line, it couldn't happen. until it did. You're right it Wentz wasn't as bad. It was a record seter at the time though. The numbers just keep getting bigger. Do you get the drift yet? Never say never.

I will make you a bet he’s back in 2027. Because the only way they could do it as as post June 1 trade. They’re not taking a $43 million cap and a $85 million dead money hit for one year where they can get out of it much easier than 2028.

And I can say never say never with anything. however, there’s multiple avenues with this. Hurts would have to waive his NTC. Maybe problematic. Secondly still dealing with blood clots and didn’t look good past two years. So wentz they were fortunate to still get another team team to pay them a potential 1st+. I find it hard to believe a team, knowing that hurts, needs an extension, coming up blood clots, coming off two years where you would consider down years are gonna give the eagle a type of capital they want to take that type of cap hit and dead money hit

They can't cut or trade him before June 1, and I'd be stunned if someone wanted to trade for a starting QB after June 1 (miss OTAs). They did it with AJ, but the Pats were desperate. If you cut him after June 1, it's survivable (still painful as the dead money total is over $100mm), but he has to be able to pass a physical or you can't cut him without an injury settlement.

Obviously if the clots are a career ender, then you negotiate a settlement.

We have had inexperienced olines without this level of oline dysfunction. Mannion and Kuper are just not good at doing their jobs.

It is a systemic issue in workers' comp. A PT only place gives better rates to the carrier so client's get less skilled rehab, less time with the physical therapist and have a worse recovery. Maragos did not have the recovery the doctors expected him to have. There was also a meniscal injury that was not repaired. It doesn't mean there was a mistake by anyone. A jury doesn't understand that is the way the treatment is going to go. They are going to wonder why the doctor isn't more hands on and addressing problems. The reality is the PT notes probably said Maragos is progressing and reports little pain. The doctors used that report and the little time they had with Maragos to assess his recovery.

Are you involved in workers comp? That's a fascinating world.

Ok you guys win. You changed my mind. How depressing. Another season of disappointing poop on offense.

it’s way different with a quarterback getting traded June 1 than it is a wide receiver. Plus a wide receiver that was hellbent on getting out of there and New England was hellbent on getting him. Add on he can use his NTC. wentz also wanted out.

I don’t see a team waiting three months to get their quarterback implemented into their scheme and system. Cause he’s not allowed to have contact with them technically until that trade is official and goes through.

And there has to be a market. Jalen hurts would’ve probably had a market if he finished the year healthy. But now he’s dealing with blood clots. Which hopefully isn’t an issue going forward. He’s also dealing with the fact he needs an extension. And we’re also dealing with the fact the passing game hasn’t looked good in two years and he’s the quarterback of that passing game. Those are things that are gonna be used against them. I don’t think they’re gonna get the capital that makes it worth it to do that trade at this moment.

Forgive my ignorance but could they extend/rework Hurts in a way that makes him easier to offload eventually? Assuming not

I would tell you this, I don’t think it’s out of the realm of possibilities that they take a quarterback of the future in this draft. If they’re picking in the top 10 (which I’m guessing they believe won’t be too often), they love a quarterback and they already made the decision they don’t want to give hurts an extension, I can see them taking that quarterback. they can bring him along slowly because they have Jalen hurts there for 2027. And then at the end of the 2027 season, maybe Jalen hurts shows he can stay healthy and looks good then trade him then.

i’m not saying that’s going to happen. Before anybody gets pissed off. But they have optionality to do that with the capital they have and where they’re likely gonna be picking in the draft if this thing goes off the rails.

Question for @vikas83 believe he’s said in the past they really can’t.

Ha. I have made a couple comments in the last week since he came back and responded to different posts. Didnt really initiate. But who da F cares? Was quiet before that. Why does that bother you? People rehash crap in here all day about the same topic.

It's been nonstop AJ hate since week 1. Where you been? lol

Things to watch for the rest of the season:

  • The young linemen

    • Bell was viewed as a project - a JuCo transfer who only started one full season at Miami at left tackle. He was supposed to sit behind Lane and hopefully compete for the job next year. There have been growing pains, but for a guy who was pressed into action way before expected, he has held up OK. It's encouraging and hopefully he progresses.

    • Kendall looked the part when he was healthy - really hope to see him back out there soon.

    • Lampkin feels more like a backup for multiple positions - a much better version of Brett Toth. Not sure he's a starter at guard, and they seem to like Kendall at center.

  • Wideouts

    • Wicks is looking like a steal for a 5th and a 6th. Plus, having him next year at $12.5 million is also looking great.

    • Lemon is coming along despite everyone calling him a bust after camp.

    • Cooper is showing something as well and seems a solid WR4.

  • Jalen Carter - as the hand heals, he's becoming a monster. Wrecked the Jags, and Carolina basically double teamed him on every snap.

  • Nolan Smith - he's been our best edge, which may be akin to being valedictorian of summer school, but he's playing the run well and getting some pressure while Hunt and Greenard are MIA.

  • Campell/Trotter - one of them hopefully seizes the job.

You gave a good list. I'd like to see Wis elevated from the PS to see if he can grow at all at S. Lemon is coming along even though some people on here think of him as a wasted first round pick. Kid seems like he finds ways to get open and catches the ball.

I wish Bell and Kendall were learning under better circumstances and with better coaches.

Listening to Berman and tom P. talk to Sheil about what they’ve heard from hurts camp, i don’t think he’s wanting to leave. Maybe that changes. But unlike wentz if they drafted a kid, i think he would just be more motivated to go out play well and then he could force their hand in 2028 offseason

I should start focusing on draft strategy now, but I'll wait until the rush is over and get off the bandwagon after these next 3 division games. They'll be cooked if they lose 2 of 3, but I'll wait a bit.

My sense right now is the Eagles don't need to force a QB pick; even if they're picking top 10 just take the BPA, depending on the overall strength of the draft. The Eagles need draft help on OL, EDGE, S, RB, QB, ...... hard to think of a position they wouldn't draft.

It'd be nice if there was another 2nd or 3rd round QB prospect they can hit on -- Foles and Hurts both contributed heavily to a championship and I think the teams racing to trade up to #1 overall for a QB are often chasing fool's gold.

I don’t think he was a wasted, first round pick. I think the issue people have is labeling him a bust is wrong. However I looked at it at the time they drafted him, I wouldn’t have moved up to get him. I didn’t think the drop off from Cooper and him were very much at all. Frankly, I also liked Cooper more than I liked him after watching both multiple time at usc and Indiana and then just doing the research. I think coaching hurts him. However cooper is also dealing with bad coaching, bad OL and mid QB play. Missed 5 weeks but popped on Sunday. I’m waiting for lemon to have that type of flash. We’ve seen minimal partially coaching/scheme and partially adjustment to the league

People don’t like when I say this, I don’t think he’s gonna be a bust. I think he’s gonna be closer to what Shakir is for the bills than the build up of him being Amon St. Brown or cooper kupp that i saw people say. Frankly if he has an agholor career i wouldn’t call it a bust of a career. To me a bust is someone completely useless like reagor or JJAW.

Too early to say Stowers is a bust. But to me his floor is much more potential bust than lemon. I think lemon sticks in the league for a while. I just think expectations of st. Brown or kupp career aren’t realistic either

If the guy keeps sucking then he deserves what I'm gonna give him. But I knew he sucked. He needed to stay humble. Maybe he is now.
