Actually he let's the ball drop too frequently, as well.

Good guy Greg Ward just wants to let the opposing punter look good too

I turned 38 today and have lost 52lbs since February. I’m very rarely ever proud of myself, but I’m feeling pretty proud today and thought I’d share. Carry on.

  • At this point, I’d like to see a former HC on the staff, but the biggest coaching news left is whether Stout stays.  BOOOOOOOOM

Will Ben make a free throw this series?

Howard gets two fouls that werent fouls...

For F’s sake.  JJAW? Hightower? Watkins?  Fulgham?

You are comparing guys who are not good enough to a guy that's not good enough.   None of them, Ward included, belong as one of a team's top 3, at least not based on what they have shown so far.  There is still time for some of those young guys to develop.

Ward played 65 ST snaps in 2020 as a 16-game player, so about 4 per game. He had 21 punt returns. So of the other 44 special teams snaps, how many came as a punt returner when he didn’t field the punt? Does he play any other special teams besides maybe the hands team?

This guy’s special team’s resume has a single line on it: Bad at returning punts.

A lot.

Law of Averages says "Yes".   Recent history would say "No".

Something has to give.

Really bad sign when a 2nd year player is already getting the "best shape of his life” treatment.

Also, I generally just assume all 2nd year 23 year old players come into camp in the best shape of their life.

And the guy wasn't in bad shape last year, he is supposedly a gym rat so is pretty rocked up. I don't think it matters anyways, I don't think he's that good and ever lives up to the 21st selection for a wide receiver starved team no matter what he weighs

Wizards are just rolling over now.

It wasn’t that he was in bad shape, but he might have been too rocked up for his own good. He looked stiff last year, and the extra muscle likely slowed him down.

Yup. Reagor was clearly in "good" shape, but he wasn't in the "right" shape for what they asked him to do.

Yeah, that’s probably the best way to put it.

Maxey has a ton of potential. Really like his game

Habs  / leafs is a good one ,go habs

What makes Ward such a bad PR isn't the fact that he just isn't dynamic, it's that he's horrible at judging when to fair catch, when to let it bounce and when to make a return.  It was truly maddening to watch him wave off a punt while he stood at the 15 only to see it die inside the 10.

I didn't realize he played such limited ST snaps outside of being the PR.  He really needs to step up his game there.

No.  They need to find a better option there.

Random Saturday night Eagles thoughts....

-- Excited about this offensive line. The right side is healthy (for now), Mailata should only get better, and whoever starts at LG between Seumalo and Dickerson should be more than solid. Insane depth.

-- The DL is a resurgent Fletcher Cox away from being the best Eagles DL in recent memory. I think it's possible.

-- I'll keep saying it -- Doug Pederson was an absolute trainwreck last year. Not sure his mismanagement of that roster has been fully discussed this offseason.

-- I think Jalen Hurts's upside is a Eli/Flacco/Foles type where he's frustrating as hell to watch in the regular season, but is locked in when it counts.

I'm obviously a fan of what Nick Foles did for the Eagles, but even so, it's hard to compare a guy who never held onto a starting job for a full season to two guys who started for a decade or more and led their teams to a Super Bowl victory.

Disagree with this. It was just in 2018 when we had a 3 years younger Cox, Graham along with Barnett, Long, Bennett and not so great but good depth with Ngatta and Jernigan. Kerrigan is nice but I’d be surprised if he and Sweat reach the combined 15.5 sacks Long and Bennett did.

Not that it’s a particularly important position in the current NFL, but I would have used Hightower on KR last season instead of Boston Scott.  Scott has as about as much chance of breaking a KR as Ward does breaking a PR.

Ward had the only PR TD in the AAF, where he learned to return punts two years ago.

Practically no one has a chance at a KOR for a TD with the current rules.  The real question is whether the return can go further than the 25 or was the kick short to force that attempt.  The revolving door on STs had an impact on returns last year.  I think Hightower has difficulty tracking balls that may cause reluctance to use him as a KR.  He did some KOR in college but only occasionally. He has nice speed at 4.43 but he is also 6’2” and 190, which is kind of tall but light for a KR.  He offers a bigger target than Scott, who has similar speed (4.40 pro day) and more agility. Scott had 4.2 yards after contact with 45 missed tackles after contact.  He is a bit hard to bring down. And he doesn’t drop the ball.

I really don’t understand the strong dislike for a couple of underdogs that have produced more than a number of maybes.

Yes he does.  But that doesn’t mean that he can’t improve on that.  At least he doesn’t muff it like Reagor.  There has to be a happy medium.  I will offer that in researching my response to Manu, I was looking at all the players that had ST snap counts last year.  It was a who’s who of many of the injured players. That had to impact the return blocking and may have impacted what Fipp told Ward and Scott to do.  We just don’t know. Now if the Eagles enjoy better health and we see the same results from Ward and Scott, it is time to start shopping for return specialists. Hopefully, we see some competition this summer.

Actually, we were talking depth WRs so I wasn’t including them in the top three, including Ward but unfortunately one will have to be #3. I suspect and kind of hope that #3 is a platoon of Ward (slot and maybe some X where he does okay on the Greg Lewis route), Fulgham, (x and maybe some slot - he has good agility so he should be able to play some slot) and Watkins (z and maybe some X) with both Smith and Reagor playing all 3 of the x,y and z positions).   Hightower if not Watkins (but limited in his z routes because of ball tracking and maybe some slot but he isn’t overly agile).  Thing with Hightower and Watkins is they are both body catchers although Hightower does use his hands at times but both have drop issues. (Hope Smith and Ward rub off on them for their hands).  JJAW?  (Fool’s gold at this point to me.)

No DE signed past this year.  That is scary.

:offtopic:

For you Colorado area bloggers, does anyone have experience with how bad the road closure and lane limitations are on 50 west of Gunnison and how CO-92 is as an alternative route?  Driving up the Million Dollar Highway in a few weeks to the Black Canyon NP and then over towards Gunnison on 50 and that construction looks like a cluster F.

Ngata was useless and Jernigan had a broken back. Bennett and Long had more production due to Barnett and Jernigan's injuries.

Kerrigan is significantly better than Long was in 2018, in my opinion. 2018 Bennett was better than Barnett and Sweat are now (or, more accurately, were in 2020). Hargrave is significantly better than what was starting opposite Cox in 2018.

I reiterate, my comment was contingent on Cox looking somewhat like the dominant guy we're used to.

I wouldn't worry about picking that apart too much. "Frustrating to watch regularly but clutch" was the comparison.
