January 5, 20233 yr @vikas83 @Gannan I am learning about some of this stuff on the fly. Jefferies has gotten 212 voters every time. Couldn't 12 Democrats be present and and not vote, lowering the threshold and make that 212 the majority of 223 and make him the speaker ??

If you vote present, you don't vote for Jefferies.

I guess it depends how Red their districts are. I would think Repubs who voted Dem because their party has become a disaster, and some independents may see this as caring about the people first. 1 minute ago, vikas83 said: No, because then he would have only 200 votes. I think they would rather strike a deal with Jeffries first, before giving up their vote which in turn allows Jeffries to ascend to Speaker. But not likely any Republican is willing to deal with Jeffries. It would be career suicide as a GOP rep.
January 5, 20233 yr I realize much of this is procedural but, man, just have the 20 wingnuts vote first and once they get to 6, tell them to shut up and sit down. These votes aren't done in the interest of efficiency, for sure. It is entertaining, though. If McCarthy can't even broker a deal with his own caucus to have gotten the 218 votes on the first ballot he really should step aside. This never should have gotten to the House Floor. For Americans this must be an aggravating waste of time, when it surely has to end in one of a few ways: -- McCarthy brokers a deal with these dummies and bribes them to get him to 218 -- McCarthy steps aside and another candidate emerges Scary that this is the majority party in Congress now. The reason this hasn't happened in 100 years is that party leadership gets the junior reps in line. A complete void in party leadership means these clowns -- a lot of whom haven't been in Congress long enough to have a cup of coffee -- are allowed to gum everything up for days and days.
