IMO… All sports are getting more and more boring as years go by. I can’t do any basketball or baseball anymore and I watch less and less football every year.

I like the finals in Men’s track events but that’s about it as far as the Olympics go.

The Euro cup this summer was fun though. It’ll be weird next year when the World Cup is in the fall. Yes, if it comes down to it, I’ll watch the USMNT over an Eagles game.

Just some random comments for people who didn't watch the game and have no intention to do so. I find myself being more annoyed at the result of the game than I probably should. It's ridiculous t

It’s his generation.  All show.  I like the guy.  But it’s a little much.

It’s fun for the kids. They love it, and it’s good for the sport. It keeps the interest going for the youth who are absorbed with gaming and youtube and not so much sports.

I get the generation thing but I still feel like he cranks it up to the next three levels where other professional QBs don’t. Unless I’m not paying enough attention I haven’t seen a thing from any of the top QBs this year or last.

Players seem to gravitate toward him so whatever he’s doing is working in that regard.

Well the plague is easily treated with antibiotics. We have some loose in the US in Colorado.

Around 30K die from the flu each year.  Maybe vaccination would help that too.  But getting ill or injured by exercising freedom of choice doesn’t put the burden solely on the person not taking care. If insured, then the injury/illness cost is spread amongst other insureds raising premiums and, if not, to taxpayers through Medicaid or Medicare.  My two cents.

I'm not thrilled with people not wanting to get vaccinated either.  But unfortunately, the amount of bad/misleading information that has been put out there (nonstop) over the course of the past year or so...(about the vaccines, etc) plus the fact that it has become politicized...well, I can't blame some for not "trusting" what seems to be people from the "other side" to some.

Being non partisan for most of my life has allowed me to (at least try) to see the world from both sides and I get where some folks are coming from.  I've said it before and this is a prime example, the furthest left and the furthest right buy into some of the same conspiracy theories and the entire vaccine "thing" both (far) sides seem to subscribe to. It's the most extreme that scream the loudest and unfortunately the most extreme seem to be convincing close to 40% of the population in this case.

The irony is that most people have been getting vaccines their entire lives, don't have issues with drinking alcohol or taking medications,  or eating fast food everyday, or some take street drugs, others facial injections to look younger, etc etc etc....and some athletes don't have issues with injecting themselves with steroids, painkillers, etc (all known to potentially cause liver damage or worse) yet they have issues taking a vaccine now, when society needs most people to take it?  That's what happens when stuff like this gets politicized and you let the conspiracy theorists take over.  😞

to be clear here, I dont think Biles has, or has been diagnosed today with any mental illness. By her answers in the media after the event it really just sounds like she was just nervous. Thats totally different. One is acceptable and deserving of support. The other is chicken ish, and deserving of blame for letting the team down.

It's not my job to diagnose her, it's not even my wife who is trained in diagnosing mental health issues to diagnose her, that would be her personal therapists job.

Having said that she doesn't need to be diagnosed with something to justify taking time for her mental health.

Mental health can be anything from mild depression to full blown manic depression or even mild anxiety to full blown anxiety disorder.

If she says she needs to prioritize her mental health over competing who am I or anyone to question how she feels and if those feelings are justified?

Questioning people's claims of needing, wanting mental health help/ care/ rest does nothing but enforce negative stigmas toward mental health.

There are anxiety disorders.... and then there is just being human and feeling nerves before competition. Thats not illness. You just need to learn coping skills. Which... is something these younger generations dont seem to learn. So they quit. So now we will start calling a little bit of competitive nerves a mental illness and coddling them even more. And praise them for being quitters and taking care of their mental health. So wrong. Taking care of their mental health is not what we just witnessed today.

She met with a sport psychologist once for competition nervousness and supposedly learned how to turn it in to focus. In sports psych this is a principle known as the inverted U hypothesis. You show and describe this curve to the athlete. Explain that those feelings are normal. But there are coping strategies to make sure you know how to peak at the right time. Too little arousal you under perform. Too much, you underperform. You learn how to peak.

That's very informative, thank you.

But how do we know that's all it is in her case?  It could look like that from the outside but internally maybe she has something else going on?  I don't like the media "jumping the gun" either on this one because they are also making assumptions.  Until we know what she's dealing with it's not fair, imo, to really judge at this point (either pro or against).  Because like you said, if it's something easily treatable (like above) we don't want an entire "it's ok not to compete if your nervous movement" but if it's something more serious, then we don't want people criticizing her either.

Not only are sports getting boring but there are so many other factors getting in the way of my enjoyment of sports.  GREED is going to ruin everything.  I'm a HUGE college football fan.  The NIL for players has already created millionaire teenagers and now with all of the talk of creating a Super SEC looks to make things even worse.  No one wants a 20 team SEC with teams from all over the country.  It's all driven by the all mighty dollar and greed.  I hate it.  Same goes with the NFL adding games that no one has asked for.  Not to mention all of the the other stuff infiltrating sports now.

At what point does tradition and not trying to change things come in to play?  Never?  One thing the pandemic taught us is that life goes on without sports.

not all sword fights are boring. sword play is though.

Little skinny wobbly swords with 900 lbs of padding is dumb. Real swords is cool

I preferred epee or saber over foil and would have loved to learn long sword although that is more of a hacking tool. Being left handed but used to dealing with most things done right handed, I was very good at defense and pretty unstoppable on offense,  I like epee because both slash and thrust count for points.  Hardest to defend and parry.  Sabers are great for slashing. I have actually practiced with both short sword and long sword including shield.  The reason in fencing you hold your back hand up is to display no dagger (think cloak and dagger). I have also tried m hand with a buckler but I tended to get it caught and then expose myself.

The padding is protection because blades do break on thrust at times. I have had it happen both by and against me.  Both times with foils.  Both times cutting into the suit.

I'm pretty sure Simone Biles one of the best ever and most decorated female gymnasts has coping skills and I'm sure she knows better than you or anyone how to cope with the pressures that comes being a top national athlete in the spotlight.

No one is praising anyone for quitting or suggesting biles quit nor is anyone suggesting she has a mental illness nor is anyone coddling her.

Taking time for ones mental health is as important as eating a balanced healthy meal.

If Simone Biles said I can't compete because I haven't eaten In 3 days and I'm drained no one would blink, yet she says I'm mentally emotionally drained and need to step back and somehow that means she lacks coping skills is weak and a coddled quitter???

If a player breaks a leg and says I can't compete anymore would you call them a quitter? Same applies here, biles was struggling mentally/emotionally and she had the wherwithal to recognize that and do what's best for her and her team going forward. Good for her that takes courage in the face of a world that will try and ignorantly villify that choice.

Simone Biles said she wasn't in the right mind set to compete and felt by doing so she would hurt her team so took her self out of the competition, who are you or anyone to know what's in her head or how she feels or to question her desire???

What’s keeping sports ascending is the legalization of gambling across the country. I personally think if you bet on sports you deserve to lose your money but understand why it makes it more entertaining

I've never been a gambler, I just don't comprehend all of that stuff.  I was talking to a guy in my office yesterday and he has about 4 apps on his phone and can pick up and bet on any and everything...is the next pitch going to be a strike, will this guy get a hit and so on.  It's such a huge industry now and unfortunately that's the customer the leagues want.

I agree.  We can make a push to spread mental health awareness and destigmatize it.  In doing so we should be careful not to cross to far too this extreme where we coddle people who quit just due to feeling regular human emotions,  which are normal- not illness at all.

There could be something more serious with Biles. Something clinically diagnosable.  But everything she has said today makes it sound like it was just nerves and not wanting to make a mistake out there.

If she wants to help raise awareness and destigmatize it then she should be open about it if there's something more. The answers she gave do not make her sound deserving of so much praise about bravery.  Right now she appears the polar opposite of brave. Abs her teammates have every right to be pissed that she cost them gold.

No offense but that’s degenerate gambling. Which is exactly what the books want. I enjoy gambling in moderation. Crazy prop bets and parlays just lose you money.

Yup.

I'm not a gambler either and I have friends that play fantasy football just so they'll be more Interested in watching in Sunday.

The day I have to take up another habit to keep me interested in watching football is the day I'll stop watching football.

I'm not saying fantasy football tarnishes the game or that gambling does I'm just saying that both shouldn't be the leading factor in why one follows sports.

Breaking a leg is an injury/illness. Getting nervous is not.  Horrible comparison.

Watching rugby right now and getting excited for football.  I cannot f’in imagine trying to,deal, with Mailata as a rugby player.

Simone Biles doesn't owe you or anyone else an explanation.

If she says she's not mentally fit to compete why question it???

What's the point. What answer would satisfy your expectations???
