I often think that in domestic sports, the Super bowl might be the toughest to win.

Sudden death, regular season counts for very little.

But you can build a team.

Trades, drafts, transfers (in soccer), even loan deals.

But internationally, we'll you play the hand you're dealt.

You either have a talented squad or you don't.

England can't "buy" a Messi or Mbappe for example. 

This is a very talented squad but man, what a chance this was to win it all.

Hopefully get a run at the next one.

Might try to put together a trip to take in some of it 😉

My UK buddy is coming over for the game tonight (7pm start my time) so I'll have to get a feel for how he thinks about it.  He seemed pretty ok in a few texts but it may not have sunk in yet.

I honestly do not understand the infatuation with Sterling. Seems like a very average player to me with a crazy hype train.

I’d love to see Croatia win it all. Obviously I’m biased towards Modric, but for a tiny country that has to battle through Europe just to qualify, I think it would be really cool to see them lift the cup.

All kidding aside, I was pulling for England against France, and if Argentina can't do it, England were the only team left I would've liked to see hoist the trophy. 

None, of the final four teams interest me, but I guess root for Argentina. 

 

 

Gregg openly trashing Reyna at a leadership conference is just rich

Sounds like they butted heads a lot. The fact that Reyna had to apologize to his teammates makes it sound like he wasn't innocent in the matter either. You'd think both of them ought to know better given the stakes and circumstances, but apparently not.

 

 

Gregg told him before the WC that he wouldn't have a major role so he probably didn't practice hard, but ended up apologizing. Should have been a non story but Gregg bought it up at a conference and someone leaked to The Atlantic.

I'm not trying to side with either one. Berhalter should 100% be canned for everything, up to and including his handling of Reyna, but players can be at fault and should be held accountable for their own behavior too. It doesn't have to be mutually exclusive. The report in the Athletic, citing unnamed sources on the team, said the situation between him and the rest of the team became untenable at one point. Sounds like he was being such a drama queen that it was rubbing a number of his teammates the wrong way.

Uh no, I don't think the Athletic is lying about having multiple sources on this. They're not in the business of writing hit pieces at the behest of people like Gregg Berhalther, lol. They're a fairly reputable outfit and I really don't think they'd stick their neck out for a thoroughly unremarkable coach who seems to be on his way out of the job.

And yes, of course the story should've been kept behind closed doors, and that's absolutely the coaches fault. It's partly why he'll probably be fired, as he should be.

But now that it's out and has been corroborated, if the report is to be believed, there's a lot of smoke for there not to be any fire. I mean, Reyna himself basically admits he was being an ass by bringing up those comments about his emotions, having to apologize to teammates, etc. I don't care how old you are, not many coaches are gonna be willing to coddle a petulant prima donna at the risk of upsetting team chemistry. He might think he's Ronaldo and so he wants to go about it like Ronaldo would, but he's not even close to that level of talent to justify behavior like that. Kid needs to grow up quick and understand what it means to be a true professional. Otherwise he'll never live up to his full potential if he keeps letting his ego get in the way.

Gio should have started every game. That’s the bottom line. He’s easily one of our best players and has the most potential on the entire team.

Maybe he didn’t conduct himself in the most professional manner, but we aren’t France. We don’t have the luxury of benching someone of his talent.

US will never be a serious soccer nation until USSF and the MLS eff alllll the way off and out of the picture.
