I’ve had this type of opinion on the matter for a while now. I think hurts’ ceiling is top 15 type QB. Probably in the 11-15 range. Will he ever reach that? That becomes the question then is that good enough to get the eagles another Lombardi. I think he can still get better. I’d hope he could somewhat improve because he has a good work ethic and i believe he wants to be better.

My concern comes down to do i think we can win a super bowl with him at QB? This means beating the Bucs, rams, bills, chiefs and teams of that ilk. I get the defense sucked last year and is part of this equation. But if you are asking me do i see the eagles being able to beat one of those teams/QBs even if we get a top 5 defense with hurts at QB, tough for me to see it at the moment.  I hope to god he proves me wrong. I’d be thrilled. I saw josh Allen have a top 5 defense last year and he (imo is a top 5 Qb) and yet he wasn’t able to do it and he put up 35+ against the chiefs. You can build up the team around hoping to get that super bowl. But you might just be the rams who did build up the roster around goff and Goff was still their biggest hurdle to winning a SB. Mcvay and the rams knew it. It’s why they made the move they did.

These are interesting points.  Jared Goff, despite not being a running QB, is a very interesting comparison here.  Jared Goff, 2017 & 2018, was a no doubt about it top 11-15 QB...and, frankly, probably higher.

People will argue that Mcvay and the Rams weapons made Goff better than he was.  They'd be right.  And guess what...arguably the best OL in the NFL, a caretaker offense, and lots of shiny weapons also make Hurts better than he is.  History showed that Goff, despite those gaudy stats from ages 23-24, was holding the Rams back.  With a year of improvement, seasoning, this OL, and the new weapons, Hurts might move into a surprisingly good statistical range.  But I think his passing acumen and deficiencies will always be what is holding this team back.

A team can only go so far building around a QB whose weakness is all aspects of passing.  All the athleticism in the world, attitude, leadership, and continued marginal improvement are not good enough when we are on a relentless, agonizing march towards adequate as a passer.

Last year he looked like he didn’t belong in an NFL camp. He was dominated in the preseason. Legitimately one of the worst players I remember watching.

It was weird how bad he was. For him to be rosterable is an accomplishment.

Yeah, I was thinking about this yesterday.

I am not sure how much these guys will play, but this is who I am looking forward to seeing when I can watch the game.

Jurgens

Hightower

Jordan Davis (doubt he plays much)

Davion Taylor

Nakobe Dean (doubt he plays much)

Gainwell (doubt he plays much)

Milton Williams

Milton Williams is my #1.

An OL isn't necessarily fun to watch, but this experience will be critical for Jurgens.  This preseason may be the only real contact experience he gets before he is handed the starting center job.

Watkins is a tie with Williams for my #1.  He really shined last preseason, then disappeared once Hurts was under center.  We'll get another chance to see him with a different QB this preseason.

Dean and Davis are important to watch their development and to see what they are capable of, but I just don't expect much in their first preseason game.  Agree on Gainwell too, as I expect a nice year from him.  But RB is an injury crunch position for every team; I think most carries will go to backs that are absolutely buried on the depth chart whose names I don't know.

It sounds unfair, but I wrote off Hightower in his rookie season.  He's just a bad football player.  His agility isn't very good.  His hands are bad.  He's got Pinkston-level strength and frame.  He runs well in a straight line (but far from elite)...yet he's got poor hands and can't track a football.  So we've got a one-dimensional deep threat that can't track and catch the deep ball.  I don't think he's rosterable for any team.

I think Gainwell is still hurt no?  It's going to be Huntley, Brooks and the new guy.

I have no interest in Hightower.  Hard to believe he's already 26.  I'd much rather Deon Cain, who's the same age but brings a different element to WR.

Milton Williams is another.  I'm guessing we could see him at DE due to light numbers.

Immature ??  Aren’t you the guy who makes hot take after hot take, and now has half the board on ignore because you couldn’t deal with the fallout from your hot takes ??

You do not get to have input in maturity, you have no idea what it is.

Which player or players are you most excited to see tomorrow?  I'm anxious to see the non-starting defensive backs, specifically, Josh Jobe, Jared Mayden, Reed Blankenship, Mario Goodrich and the rest of the low investment DBs.  Joe Flacco is Wilson's backup and if he plays could really give the younger DB a good test.  Also excited to see how Nakobe Dean and Cam Jurgens step up. Tarron Jackson should play a lot as there is next to no DE depth and BG/Sweat will be out of pads by the first commercial break.  I hope they play Reagor a lot too.

I know he's a last minute signing due to injury but what is it with the Eagles and these short, compact RB?

DeAndre Torrey, 5-7 195

Boston Scott, 5-6 203

Kenny Gainwell, 5-9 200

Jason Huntley, 5-9 195

Miles Sanders and Kennedy Brooks are their "big" backs both at 5-11 210-213

This RB room is depressing in my mind.

It's been so long he's going to need a good massage after taking some hits and getting bruised up.

Point brought up on I think the BLG training camp recap podcast recently was that Eagles will get to go up against Watson in their joint practices regardless of his suspension. So that'll be a nice test for our improved defense.

I like Quez, I wouldn't expect to see much of him.  I think his status is pretty much set.  Hightower is interesting to me, because I want to see if he's progressed in some of those areas.  I am just looking for someone to beat out Reachor for that last WR spot.

I can’t imagine Hightower would beat out Reagor for a roster spot, especially since Reagor has the ability to return punts.

Honestly think Ward has a better chance of earning a roster spot over Hightower.

Reagor has returned punts, sort of. Not sure he has the ability to do it. I’m looking for Covey and Pascal to move ahead of him.

George Pickens is trending and man people are raving about him in Steelers camp.  I wanted him to be an Eagle.  He's a bit crazy but man the attitude, if he keeps his head straight is something I love.  Steelers just know WR.

I said it a few days back but I think he has a better year than any Eagles WR.  I know they have Claypool, Freiermut, Johnson and Najee had an absurd amount of catches last year but I think he's going to rise to the top.

I will take this bet if you would be willing.  Winner chooses loser's avatar for 1 month?   Their QB situation is similar to ours, so I just don't see any way a rookie 2nd rounder has a better year than any Eagles receiver.  Define better year?  More yards?

I don’t understand this concept that growth/improvement are sufficient to maintain both a starting job and a spot in the long term plans at qb.

There are 1,000 quarterbacks in high school that consistently improve every year.  Lots of practice squad players show growth from year 1 to 2.  Do these players get starting jobs in the nfl simply for improving?

Of course not.  They are not talented enough and lack the upside for simple improvement to meet criteria to keep the job.  That’s one extreme.  The other extremes are Trevor Lawrence and Josh Allen.  With their prototypical talent and upside, sub par play through 2 years with the silver lining of gradual improvement…that’s adequate.

Meanwhile…Dak Prescott, Russell Wilson, Tom Brady…they were not prototypical talents.  When they were thrown onto the field out of necessity, they explosively secured their jobs…because they likely would not have had sustained opportunity if they didn’t.

Hurts may not be a high school extreme, but the onus is on him to leave zero doubts about this being his job.  The talent just isn’t there for "patience.”  He doesn’t have the talent, investment, or luxury of Josh Allen, Zach Wilson, or Trevor Lawrence patience.

Yet here we are, after 2 years of absolute bottom of the barrel nfl passing, talking about settling for continued improvement in year 3.

Stop making so much sense with every post.

It’s kinda sad to see Sonny in an Eagles uniform, knowing that they would trade him away, only to see him have a brilliant career with his new team.

ESPN's Matt Miller on top 2023 QB prospects:

Quote

Tyler Van Dyke

Van Dyke burst onto the scene with nine starts last season and showed the arm strength, pocket mobility and field vision to be an NFL starter. He has to show that same ability over a full season, but NFL scouts are excited about his ability. He's a potential first-rounder.

Anthony Richardson

When you think of potential and ceiling at the quarterback position, Richardson fits. In limited action in 2021, he showed the arm strength, playmaking ability and poise to excite both the fan base and scouts. Now we have to see it over the course of a full season while he cuts down on interceptions; he had five on just 64 throws. There's Round 1 potential, but Richardson has to play more first.

Will Levis

Levis doesn't have the name recognition of C.J. Stroud or Bryce Young, but he has the size, arm strength, attacking mentality and enough mobility to be a problem for defenses. He'll have to clean up some decision-making (13 picks last season), but the tools are all in place for him to be a Round 1 quarterback and potential top-10 pick.

Former first-rounder Jalen Reagor: Battling for Eagles roster spot 'a humbling experience'

Selected 21st overall only two years ago, the Philadelphia Eagles' Jalen Reagor has fallen from a first-rounder with promise to a receiver on the bubble.

Leading into training camp, Eagles general manager Howie Roseman admitted he "expected more from" Reagor by this point, while head coach Nick Sirianni flatly said the wideout was "battling for a spot."

Considering the spot he's in now, Reagor is admittedly sheepish due to the circumstances and propelled to work hard to overcome the uncertainty, Grant Gordon of NFL.com reports.

"I love a good challenge. It's a humbling experience, 'cause you go from a first-rounder to you're battling," Reagor said Wednesday, via the team website's Dave Spadaro."But I like challenges, though."

"We've got a helluva room and there is competition in there. Obviously, people have their jobs and some people don't, some people fighting. You've just got to come in and when people go down, you step up and just be ready when it's your time."

Thus, a humbled Reagor is going to have to fight for a spot on the roster.

"I'm putting my head down and going to work, not really worrying about anything," Reagor said. "I was just focused on myself. I'm here mentally now. It's easy to be out here physically. That's a little part of the game.

"Whether I do something good or bad, it's up and down, it doesn't matter. Ultimately on Sunday, I wear the jersey. You've got to go through it to get through it."

Boston Scott sized guy.  Nice balance and good vision to see the hole.  Understands using his blockers.  Like Scott, for a short guy doesn’t tend to go down on first contact but consider the opposition he saw at college.  For a little guy, willing to run inside and doesn’t try to bounce everything outside.  Not a speed guy like Huntley. (Although I argue that one of Huntley’s flaws is trying to take the corner too much, which doesn’t fly in the NFL.). Nice fill while Scott and Gainwell are out.  But it’s Brooks I want to see tomorrow night.
