Even if he hits elsewhere if you can get someone to take that contract it gives you flexibility to use towards extending luzardo and even Ranger. Your rotation of wheeler, painter, luzardo, Sanchez and Ranger is still dominant. Plus you might also have Abel if he continues down this path

That would require DD answering questions about giving him that contract in the first place and he wouldn't want to do that. They'll double down on Nola, no doubt, chalking this year up as an "off year."

But we won’t do that and just keep letting him look like crap

That's not what the Phillies do.
May 15, 20251 yr They should just have Nola throw for every batter that participates in the Home Run Derby this year. Should be record breaking excitement
May 15, 20251 yr The path forward with Nola is clear. Put him on the IL with a phantom injury until the weather is better, put him back in the rotation for July, and pray he gets enough good starts under his belt by the deadline that he can be traded for something, anything, to get his contract off the books. Then replace him in the rotation with Painter.

May 15, 20251 yr I'm so Fing sick of Nola. I can't believe they brought that limp D bum back for 5 more years. He was on the verge of being cooked 2-3 years ago, now he's burnt to hell. But just like Walker, they're going to just keep throwing him out there to lose games.

He has never been this bad in his career. And I don’t think it’s an age drop off. He’s only 31, on the verge of 32.

He’s only 31, on the verge of 32.A couple things. Going back to 2021 he’s been good one year and bad/pedestrian the next. This year if you follow that trend was expected to be a down year. Not sure this down but it follows his trend. Some of it is velocity had been down outside of a game or two. Nola doesn’t rely on overpowering stuff but when he used to be able to hit 93-94 when you needed it, now he’s topping out at 91-92 on most nights. That’s a big enough difference to help hitters. He hit 93 just twice last night. His 3 homers given up were 90, 90 and 93. The 93 was a first pitch HR where Winn knew what was coming. His velocity was 91.8 mph on his fastball. Which is better than what he was earlier in the season but still not great. The other issue for Nola last night is he gave up 6 hits with 2 strikes on hitters and can’t put them away. Thats part fastball isn’t as good and he also not locating his pitches last night. On the season opponents hitting .230 vs. Nola with 2 strikes. Last year was .146.Some of this is he’ll be better than what he’s shown. some of this is he’s just been lousy every other season. Some of this is the amount of innings they’ve asked him to throw over the years is beginning to catch up to him. It’s why it was ridiculous they gave him 7 years. Not that they extended him. If they gave him 4 or even 5 then it still isn’t great. But makes sense. When you go look at the free agent market for starting pitchers that we’re going to be predominantly in their 30s the entire contract none unless they were true aces got over six year contract contracts. The only one in that free agency class that did besides Nola was Yamamoto who was 25 years old. The Phillies put this BS out that the Braves were gonna try to get Nola. The Braves have not given a 30+ year-old starting pitcher going into his contract over a 4-year contract. Phillies made this BS story they were gonna lose him if they didn’t do 7 years. If that was the case should’ve let him walk.
May 15, 20251 yr Yeah I think Nola has pitched more innings than any other pitcher over the past 5 years. That takes a toll.
