I’d bet my life on a "that’s baseball” quote coming when they miss the playoffs

That was Topper’s favorite saying

The real variable in all of this is what the Dbacks do Saturday and Sunday.

I feel like the Phillies are a strong bet to go 1-1 in the remaining games.

They still back into the playoffs

Padres walker buehler. Dbacks might be a bullpen game or gallen whos not been good. They put Burnes on IL so it’s open.

the Phillies have a bullpen game tomorrow. So they’re very likely not winning that game. So if the diamondbacks win tomorrow and the Phillies lose tomorrow, tied going into Sunday. Basically Phillies would have to win and need a Dbacks loss to make the postseason. Every other scenario, they miss and I’m not so sure right now with how good Tampa Bay’s pitching is that the Phillies score runs with wheeler on the mound on Sunday.

Man are they prideless

They really are going to do a mini 1964, aren't they?

I don't think I've ever disliked a Phillies team as much as these heartless losers.

I think the most likely outcome is that Phillies and Dbacks both lose today and then both win tomorrow with Phillies just barely getting in.

But if the Phillies drop another game today and are tied heading into tomorrow, then I think it’s over and they’ll be out.

64 blew 6.5 games in 12 days. This team is about to blow 5 games in 8 days.

Padres starter is Walker buehler. Dbacks going bullpen game. Which frankly their starters besides Rodriguez and pfaadt suck.

Dbacks win today and we lose it is over. Even with wheeler going Sunday. King was supposed to pitch for the padres Sunday. He’s not as he’s going to pitch game 1 or 2 of WC. Even with HFA on the line in WC you are getting guys from padres whom arent readily used

Thankfully Kevin long had picked up on this as the hitting coach…

Arizona's on a 6 game winning streak. We're on a 3 game losing streak lost 6 of our last 10. Arizona deserves this more than we do. It's really a shame. With all the talent at this club it's so disappointing they aren't winning a championship.

To be honest, I think we overrate the talent on this team. Most of the high end talent is on the pitching side. Wheeler, Sanchez, Luzardo, Duran, and heck, just because how well he has pitched recently, I'll put Nola in there as well. Offensively its really only Harper and Schwarber and they are depreciating assets at this point. Araez had been good before he got hurt but even he became infected with the Kevin Long disease. The rest of the lineup is just bad.

This team played pretty damn good baseball in August with 4 series sweeps.

I thought we had a good start to September, without looking at the game by game results. I could be wrong.

So, what happened? What changed? The bullpen? The bats? Both?

The competition changed. The teams they were beating up on in August were nowhere near the caliber of teams they are facing now. August was an aberration.

The schedule was much tougher than in August. Kind of like what the padres have done in September. Their schedule was really easy and they took advantage of it.

Yup. There is (debatably quite understandably) frustration with how the players on this team handle failure and disappointment....notably led by Harper.

But Harper turns 34 in a couple weeks. Schwarber only a few months behind and Turner right behind him. That's before we even get to poor JT, a 35 year old catcher. Of course he can't hit anymore.

Even former MVP quality players that age usually just aren't that good anymore. It's not underachieving or poor effort. They are old.

I blame DD entirely. The best young hitters on the team (entering the season) by a massive margin are Stott and Bohm. They are in their prime. And they aren't nearly good enough to pick up the slack of a bunch of 33/34 year old purchased bats who are aging out. That's why their lineup sucks.

All of their good pitchers, all of their best hitters....all scouted/drafted and got their start somewhere else.

We can be frustrated that they didn't get it done against the Astros or Dbacks years ago. But this year's version are just a bunch of old guys running out of gas. They need an entirely new middle of the lineup...and it's going to take them the better part of a decade to get one again.

Everything you said in here is the exact reason why I said that the deadline that they should be sellers. Because you could’ve convinced wheeler, Schwarber and Duran that you were gonna start a rebuild and trade them to a list of places they wanted so they could win. The window had shut. They weren’t gonna beat the teams they need to win the World Series. The roster was simply not good enough with or without the additions. They might’ve made the playoffs, but they were never going past nlds with the roster

I would add on the pitcher (Marquez) they traded away to get Arraez has moved up a lot of prospect boards. arguably one of the top 10 pitching prospects in baseball. Again, this is why you don’t trade one of those type of prospects for a two month rental and wasn’t fixing your cleanup spot, his hitting style doesn’t fit citizens Bank park like it does San Francisco or Miami where he had great success, and is one of the lowest hard-hit rates in baseball.
