What 2 things do the Dolphins, Ravens, and 49ers have in common?

They pay fullbacks and they don't win Super Bowls.

I think Jerrah needs a 7m a year fullback.

Edit: The BB and Brady Patriots used a FB but they paid him minimum wage and snuck him some illegal Dunkin coupons for breakfast sandwiches.

Ravens

2011: Vonta Leach signed a 3 year, $11,000,000 contract with the Baltimore RavensVonta Leach signed a 3 year, $11,000,000 contract with the Baltimore Ravens

2012: Won SB

49ers

2017: Kyle Juszczyk Agreed to a 4 year $21 million contract with San Francisco (SF)

2019: Superbowl Appearance - lost

Run heavy rush offenses benefit from a good FB, your post makes 0 sense. I'll give you the Dolphins though lol

Interesting uniform move by the University of Houston. Their school colors are red and white but these are essentially Houston Oilers knockoffs. I know there's a huge love for this uniform color set to be used by the Texans or the argument that the entire Oilers identity should have stayed in Houston so this is quite the statement. For the record, I think schools creating uniforms that have literally nothing to do with their schools identity is silly.

My alma mater flipping the bird at the Adams family.  Won’t surrender Oilers to the Texans and then retro them in Nashville?  Fine, here you go HTown. Needless to say, I love it.  BTW, red and white are our primary colors but we have used black and navy blue on occasion.  UH likes to play around with the uniforms.  Luv adding Columbia Blue to the mix.  UH has really learned to market the teams in Houston.

Absolutely love that movie.  Speaking of off topic, best baseball movies?  I got:

1. Major League

2. Field of Dreams

3. 8 men out

4. 42

5. sandlot

People don’t like major league 2 but it was still pretty good. Randy quaid and Jack Parkman were really good "bad guys” in that movie. And you got tanka who gave us "you have no….. marbles!”

This is a vastly underrated piece, especially for backups.  Many times, we focus on the flash of what the player can do in terms of 'making plays'.  A lot of coaches are more concerned about what the backup can do to not cause negative plays.  The coaches can work around a backup and utilize the other skill players, assuming that the backup 'does his job'.  But, when that player's job is to block this guy or that guy, or run this route and get proper spacing to create a void elsewhere... if they aren't picking up the right assignment, or they aren't hitting their landmarks, then they can negatively impact the play to the point of scuttling it.  Sometimes a positive play includes an incomplete pass, especially if the alternate is a TFL, sack, or turnover.

I agree with this, but I think it makes a better case for Jackson than Calcaterra. If we view Goedert as the #1 "do everything” TE, then we have Stoll as the backup "in-line” TE, AO as the backup "receiving” TE, and then we have the choice of Jackson or Calcaterra. Both are receiving TE’s. Who is more likely to consistently get open and make a play? I would say Jackson.

Can I use that for my Blog?  I'm not sure how plagiarism works on a message board, so I'm checking to be safe.

They grabbed who they thought was best.  The way I think about it was it came down to Arnold, Jackson and Ngata for the spot that requires off line blocking, separation, hands.  Then they noted that Denver was waiving Albert O. So they compared him to those three and the cost was a conditional flip of a six for a seven in 2025 (we don’t know what the conditions are).  So pretty low cost for a modest salary increase and a more polished TE that is faster than the other three.  As to keeping three, I think the Eagles like Calcaterra and Stoll more than we do.  Stoll is better at what we ask him to do than Jackson.  We saw that when Dallas went down last year and Jackson didn’t look so hot. (Looking good in the fourth quarter of PS chaos games isn’t a gauge).

Jackson has played in 14 regular season games for the Eagles with 3 catches for 22 yards on seven targets.  A 42% catch rate. Jack Stoll has played 33 games with 15 receptions on 19 targets with an 79% catch rate.  Calcaterra (with only rookie starts after missing part of training camp) has 5 catches on 9 targets with a 56% catch rate. (His yards per catch are like Goedert’s).  Albert O has 26 games with 54 catches on 73 targets with a 74% catch rate albeit, I admit he slipped last year to Calcaterra level. (Who didn’t slip on the Broncos with the worse coaching match I have seen in years. But that slip, the Broncos TE depth and being in the final year of his contract is probably why he was available, hence conditions on the swap.)

I liked the Jackson experiment and had hopes for it.  But this team has playoff aspirations that suggest and upgrade on Pascal/Jackson was warranted.  Frankly, I am not convinced Jackson outplayed Brady Russell in PS and Arnold did outplay him.

Your post sounds like you wanted Jackson over Calcaterra on the roster overall and Stoll relegated to 4th TE.  The demotion of Stoll, because of his role in the run offense doesn’t make sense for this team to me.  I see why people want him more involved in the passing game, but in truth in 12 personnel that is rarely his role. (I think he is a better receiving threat than most here do but as a receiving threat, he’s a JAG). But Calcaterra needs to see Albert O as a threat. He is, not sure Jackson was. Quite likely the lesser of Albert O and Calcaterra is inactive, depending on ST’s role(s). The Eagles brought in Arnold to challenge Calcaterra and now Albert O.  That position needs to replace some of Pascal’s snaps.

I would have Jackson as the 4th TE. Goedert, Stoll, AO, Jackson.

If we are keeping 4 TE’s, the 4th should be the guy with the highest upside. Stoll and AO would be the "win now” specialists in the run and receiving game respectively.

Clearly gonna happen with PG and kawhi on the clippers…

I've been typing about this issue for a few months now.

The Quez role, as explained to me,  is a "decoy" role.  Anything that would distract the defense could in theory work as a decoy.

If Quez runs downfield,  so could Albert Ok.  AO isn't as fast, but since he's much bigger, he presents a threat as serious as Quez, if not moreso.

One of the things you want to do is get the attention of a safety.  I think AO can do that.

Also about Quez is the idea that the offense can just do with him.  Your argument might have merit, but, I think my rebuttal of "tough luck, do it a different way" is sufficient.

I've also been arguing for Nolan Smith on the field on offense doing something.  If Quez is just a decoy,  Nolan Smith is just as fast,  and is high on all measurements.  1.47 10 split is really great.  He'd be a better decoy than Quez.   I'm not saying Quez should get no snaps but if his primary value is of a decoy,  I'd want more there,  a more potent decoy.  I'm not saying more targets for the Unnecessary Back, but just more potency, or more versatility in the back,  or more variety from back to back.  Run Kelee Ringo in, then run Jordan Davis in.

The Eagles should have multiple ways to get their star receivers open.  I think they do.

I'm talking about 2 starting TEs.  The Colts have 2 starting TEs.  Quez would be not starting.  You seem to understand the Zach Pascal / JJAW type of receiver.  We're talking about a receiving TE,  and yes, they would do things like what Pascal and JJAW did.    It seems like, from looking at the roster,  the Eagles have 2 starting WRs, Brown and Smith, and 2 backup WRs,  Quez and OZ.  Also 2 starting TEs,  Goedert and AO and 2 backup TEs,  Stoll and Grant Carc.   Stoll is Goederts backup and Grant C would be AOs backup.

However, some of the time the receiving TE is not on the field.  Some of the time one of the backup WRs will take the place of AO.

Diego,

The Eagles are not putting Nolan Smith on Offense. Kindly go F your own face.

Sincerely,

The Entire Blog

The problem with Stoll as a #2, is that when Goedert gets hurt, they abandon the tight end position in the receiving game. Hopefully, Albert O alleviates this issue.

This. He's a hedge against Goedert more than anything else IMO.

It's always a gamble, question is when in the draft do you gamble?

Sweat had a horrific knee injury, but was able to rebuild the knee and become a top rate DE. Certainly worth a 4th rd gamble, but would you have used a 2nd without the benefit of hindsight?

Day 3 is definitely where you roll the dice on the stud with injury concerns.    I was against drafting Sydney Jones where he was drafted.   Got that one right.   I was against drafting Dickerson where he was drafted... seems I got that one wrong.  For the record, I'd have gone with Humphries or Asante Samuel Jr (those were my two preferred choices there).

It's interesting to me that Morrow was not even added to the practice squad. He was one of the last guys cut on Tuesday, which would have led me to believe that he was being considered for the 53 man roster. And yet wasn't even added afterwards. Mildly weird.

There was rumors about him being discussed to return.   He's not signed anywhere else either... weird.

That surprises me too. I wonder if they have some kind of handshake deal with him.

Makes me wonder why he wouldn't sign to the PS though and get the $$ for the week.  He hasn't earned much in his career.

It was in this moment that JT became one of my all-time favorites.  He's got no poker face.    The other night with the bunt... Lorenzen goes and makes a crazy off balance throw on a ball that's likely going to go foul, but even if it doesn't, they have no shot at the runner.  And he just throws his arms up questioning the sanity of Lorenzen.

My research strongly indicates that he is disgruntled Giants fan who can't separate his fandom and his job.  Not exactly unbiased.  The 49ers had very little shot in that game... the fact that they couldn't protect ANY QB in that game is a pretty good indicator that they were in trouble.

Count me among them.

We knew Jackson was a work in progress. He was also obviously the second most explosive receiving threat we had at TE. I’d rather have him as the 4th TE we are keeping on the roster. Higher upside and more potential for explosive plays this season.

From IR or from the PS?

In general, I agree with you.   However, they are looking to change their history.   They are a very small program by comparison to those around them and they want to become more relevant in the new NCAA landscape.  There are opportunities coming in the next few years for them to make a significant jump.   So, they are trying to grow their fan base.   It's a smart move to try to grab a market share of the old Oiler faithful looking for a touch of nostalgia.

Houston got shut out years and years ago when the SWC died and Texas, A&M, Baylor and Tech went to the Big-8, to make the Big 12.   Houston, TCU, SMU, and Rice were left scrambling and ended up in the newly formed Conference USA.  Since then, they've always been on the outside of the major conferences.  So, they are at a crossroads... grow and get their foot in the door with the big dogs... or be relegated to minor league college football for good.   Looks like they are swinging for the fences a little bit with this uniform.

Not really.  Houston was independent for a decade before joining the SWC.  Recall that recruiting scandals killed the SWC.  In the SWC, UH was a second tier recruiting team in football.  When UH went Conference USA, they were focusing on basketball as much as football.  Same reason they slid to AAC but also aligning with some second tier football teams like Cincinnati, Memphis and UCF.  UH has always been a basketball focused program too.  And they are back to the top in basketball.  They primarily recruit from Houston area for football (a great football recruiting area).  The Columbia Blue is a marketing approach to the area. Note that Baylor has risen in basketball and some of the basketball teams from the AAC are joining Houston in the move.  The new Big 12 will be more of a player in basketball than in the past.  Also note that Houston used to be very good in track, golf and baseball.  The new Big 12 is attractive for that as well as women’s sports where UH needs to recruit better.

There has been speculation that the Eagles may be looking OL in next year’s draft.  I think BPA based on how they rank positions is always the move but if they go OL, keep an eye on Patrick Paul from UH.  Also the OT from BYU, Suamatia or something like that.  (If Howie drafts him, he would probably be Kingsley S or even King S on the Blog).
