No doubt in my mind Hurts will get us to one more SB appearance before he is done. That will be 3 to Josh Allen’s zero.

  • All of those guys changed teams  I like where you are going with this

  • Coaching and play design?  I don't understand why Hurts has so many plays where he stands in the pocket and delivers accurate passes but you guys never talk about that, only the bad plays.

I think it's more because they wanted to feature his strengths. The old offense was the "Jalen Hurts Offense." It was effective when he was a legit threat to run. The decision to shelf that part of his game (to supposedly lower injury risk) led to what we watched last year. They virtually removed one key element, without replacing it with a new one. I've always felt that the reason we don't see a lot of passes in the middle of the field is by design to keep that as a run / escape option for Jalen. With an emphasis on him running less (other than the tush push), they should have opened every part of the field up with the passing game.

I believe Jalen can learn / adapt / run different schemes. I'm curious to see if we really do change the offense this time or continue to force the OC to add just a little to the "Jalen Hurts Offense."

I do remember Jalen saying that they were running the offense he wanted to run last year. Whether that was fact or him being a good soldier I don't know.

He said that in 2024, in response to criticism about the low passing numbers. There was more context to it, and in the same answer also talked about doing what the coaches call and doing whatever is best for the team to win. They won the SB that season.

Last year he was subtly critical of Patullo, seen chewing him out on the sidelines. Other players were also critical of the OC last year too.

That's funny because in my mind he won't. Not sure why we are comparing him with Josh Allen but I will definitely take the sb win. No it wasn't all Hurts but he did play well. Since then he's played meh.

Bad OLines make QBs look meh.

Especially when the QBs can't find the open receiver.

When Hurts stinks it up this year.

Book it. Game 1.

Hurts won't play during preseason. He'll be rusty.

I am going to revisit this post when the season starts....lol....count on it....this is something I am curious about....

Sean Mannion's comments on Hurts from his introductory press conference:

Q: So when you come in here for the first time and start a relationship with Jalen, how does that process work? Getting to know a guy, what he likes to do — how did you navigate that?

A: Yeah, you know, I think it starts really just connecting with him on a personal level, get to know him, get to know kind of what his interests are, what makes him tick. And then once you start to kind of get to know a guy on a personal level, I think the football connection becomes pretty easy. It’s been a great process with Jalen. He’s been a pleasure to work with and really since I got the job, being able to connect with him on a personal level and then on a football level has been great.

Q: How much of a learning process is it going to be for Jalen? He’s had a bunch of different coordinators during his career. Is this kind of starting over for him again?

A: Yeah, I think Jalen’s been outstanding in the meetings. Having gone through multiple coordinators, you can tell he’s a really capable learner and that’s been really fun to work with on a daily basis. I think there’s always going to be some degree of connection and, like I said, it’s a blend of the things he’s really thrived in here and some of the new things we’re bringing to the table. But it’s been a great process to really build this thing from the ground up with him and with our staff. We’re being deliberate with the teaching and building this thing with a strong foundation because it’s constantly evolving. We’re always looking at how we can make this better.

Q: What is your evaluation of Jalen’s skill set and how it lends itself to the team?

A: Jalen’s been awesome. I really think he can do anything we ask of him. He’s accurate, a great athlete, and attacks the fundamentals. He’s always wanting more things to work on — fundamentals, timing, understanding the scheme. He’s hungry for more and those are the guys you love working with. He has great arm strength, great accuracy, and is obviously a tremendous athlete. He asks thought-provoking questions, is detailed, and attacks his fundamentals every day.

Q: Jalen has been a really good running quarterback. How important is it to get him back to being a threat in the running game?

A: Jalen has a unique skill set in that way, so that’ll certainly be part of what we do. But we’re looking at all areas as an offense to attack defenses weekly. His running ability is something that makes him unique and will absolutely be part of it, but it won’t be the only part of it.

I guess pretty standard answers from Mannion. He didn’t say anything there that makes you think oh wow that’s going to be interesting.

We know Jalen works hard and is always keen to improve. We know he’s a committed guy who takes football very seriously. The key is going to be whether he can play in an offense that requires him to do things he hasn’t typically done well or seemingly liked to do in the past. Can he work more under centre? Can he throw with better anticipation? Can he work the middle of the field more? Those are going to be key to whether this offense works.
