Eagles drafted a running QB, Cole Payton. I wonder if he can find the open receiver.

Cole Payton is our new QB prospect to worship as @ManchesterEagle says we will do.

We will hold him to the golden standard set by the great Kevin Kolb.

There are extremes on both sides. Regardless, I still don't understand why people would rather see players "gone" than root for them to help us win games. To me, there's no questioning his desire to win games. We all know he puts in the work all year long. So those are two traits everybody wants. I'm not going to convince anybody else to think like I do. But I still don't understand why there are Eagles fans rooting against Jalen Hurts.

Completely agree with you.

I have concerns about Jalen, I have concerns as to whether he can run the scheme that they want to implement here. But that doesn't mean I don't want him to work out. I won't root for him to be gone until he shows us that he absolutely can not succeed in this system. And even then I won't be happy to root for him to be gone.

Jalen has already exceeded expectations. And he's shown he can improve and he's shown he can prove his doubters wrong so I'd say there is a very good chance he does that again this year. He's going to have the weapons to do so and a new scheme to hopefully help get guys open.

Do you think he can get 160 yards and better than 57% completion against a depleted 49rs defense in the playoffs at home? 4.8 ya passing? 2.8 ya rushing? I heard he's a dual threat so maybe he can get more than 15 yards on the ground to add to that in the playoffs, when it's time to really turn it on. It's a high bar. If so give him the job. If not Howie can go to the nearest Walmart parking lot and throw a rock. The first person he hits in the head can be the Eagle's next starting QB. I bet AJ would stay for that.

This year is Hurts swan song. Because we've all seen what he is and isn't at this point. A very limited passer with legs that no longer give him any advantage. Hurts had every opportunity to make a case for himself in the playoffs last year and he wet the bed without a 2k rusher to bail him out. I don't care about what happened two years ago. We all watched what happened last season and it was week in and week out pathetic. Hurts is cooked. Sayonara.

That’s not to say we don’t need better showing from Hurts. Last year the whole offense stunk and he was part of that. Hopefully Mannion is both good and stays for at least two years.

But those who believe Hurts is on the hot seat this year will be sorely disappointed.

The extremist views are tiresome. He's got some great strengths and accomplishments, and some intangibles like leadership and clutch factor. He's got some weaknesses and things that at this point may not really improve. So what he needs is the right coaching and scheme that plays to his strengths (spoiler alert, every QB needs coaching and scheme that play to his strengths). His dual threat was part of what made him successful and the last 2 years his running has been sluggish and he's been hesitant. He's never been a top passer in the league and never will. He is what he is. 2022 was his best, 2023 passing stats were better other than INTs. He may be on the decline as sometimes that happens to QBs that rely on running ability.

It's clear the organization is making major changes. New scheme, now OC and coaches, new personnel brought in via FA and draft. If the coaches and scheme are working well but Jalen isn't executing, they will move on. They are already prepared to do so. Financially it would make sense to trade him after it's feasible (probably after next season and take whatever hit comes with it). They've traded McNabb and Wentz in the past, they fired a SB winning coach. They aren't afraid to get ahead of things and make changes before things get worse. If Hurts lights it up and it's working really well, of course that's a different story. Cole Payton is a guy to develop like McKee, maybe he can become a good #2 after McKee is gone. They may end up drafting a QB next year. We know Lurie wants an explosive offense and more return for the money being spent on offense. As money needs to shift to paying defensive players, changes are already happening and more to come.

I think this will be the prove it season for Hurts. Like you and I discussed (I think in this thread) the idea of spreading the cost around the roster with a QB on a rookie contract could very well be the maneuvering that Howie looks towards next season since the 2027 draft, on paper, has a deeper QB pool.

If Hurts adapts and plays well with a new scheme and coach, then all of this is moot. But if it becomes apparent that the 2025 season was the first season of a Hurts decline, this organization has moved on from players and coaches that have had tremendous success in the past, and will likely move on here too.

I agree. While anything can happen, my guess based on how things have been going is that they will move on from Hurts. Get a decent draft pick return in a trade. I also have this suspicion that Howie is going to be one of the GMs that sets the trend of not overpaying QBs unless they are truly worth it, and build a great roster and insert a QB on a rookie deal or a veteran who is not breaking the bank. The Seahawks just did it too. The QB position overall just isn't what it was 20 years ago. Teams need to stop paying big contracts to Kirk Cousins, Daniel Jones and guys like that. If a guy proves to be a top QB then pay him sure.

I think Lurie and Howie are also tired of the inconsistency on offense from year to year with different OCs. They want a new system that sticks, and plug in the players to execute it. It makes it easier for Howie to draft and sign players for a system, and having coaches in place to run it. This team could very well be a new dynasty if they do it right.

I agree with what you have said. Except… I do think he’s on the hot seat a little. Now maybe hot seat is too strong? But if he struggled this year I do think the team will look to move on. Mostly because I think this is the last year of his guaranteed money? And the cap hit is rising on his contract so I think they want to use this year to make a decision on him.

There are people rooting for Hurts to fail. He's not even coming off a bad year. You wouldn't know that by listening to the critics. There were execution issues all over the offense last season and Hurts was the most consistent guy out there. We were 18th in rushing yards last season. That's a monumental drop considering the percentage of runs called. We all know the main struggles were a result of the O-line execution. If the O-line doesn't rebound, that will be a much bigger issue than QB.

Hurts will be here for quite a while.
