June 8, 20251 yr The trade compensation is admittedly lower than I had originally anticipated. In giving the Saints front office a bit of the benefit of the doubt and piecing together various stories from local media, it appears the Saints were in a position where they were going to be forced to trade the talented, young slot corner. But the hang-up was that Gardner-Johnson wanted to be paid as a top tier safety, not just as a nickel corner. When the Saints indicated they were not going to pay him "top safety” money, he – according to reports – participated training camp essentially in physical attendance only. He refused to take coaching and generally was still holding out for the new contract he believed he was worth. In light of the trade compensation heading the Saints’ way from Philadelphia, I’d have to believe that, like the Saints, there just were simply not many teams in the NFL who were willing to offer the type of contract Gardner-Johnson was demanding. That meant the Saints were going to be practically forced to take anything they could get from a team willing to pay up for Gardner-Johnson’s services.
June 8, 20251 yr I was digging through some players with positional pay gripes. This article on CGJ isn’t really accurate all the way. There are much better ones I read…but lost them digging into other players at other positions and such. CGJ wasn’t looking for market setting top S pay from the Saints. But he wanted more than anybody will pay a Slot CB. Which obviously gets you up into the upper tier of S players in pay. Not really any takers throughout the league willing to pay the proven Slot CB …S pay. CGJ was clearly elite Slot CB. Can’t go back in time to definitively state he was absolutely the best Slot CB. But he had played some S roles mixing things up with his versatility.
June 8, 20251 yr So top Slot CB….name we all know even…before he even became an Eagles for many of us. But we didn’t pay him either. Since the 31 other teams wouldn’t pay the Slot CB ..S money….he came to us on a full time position switch to S….as part of the arrangement of him accepting us. He plays S…on a prove it contract one season. Really even balled out at S for the most part. Made those big plays finishing by intercepting well. His angle of pursuit and some other fundamentals were terrible.
June 8, 20251 yr Easy example because we all are very familiar with it. Nobody was willing to pay the Slot CB…more than Slot money. Like absolutely nobody. No market for that at all. Heck he was elite Slot CB too. But could play S well. So if you can play two positions….how many times will people choose the higher paying position as the one they’ll play? Any players. Think you see guys that have cashed in big on several contracts…those guys sometimes can afford to not just follow the money. But as a rookie setting up that first big contract.
June 8, 20251 yr Coop was a high pick. So he signed for 4 years at 9 mil. Great rookie contract money. Money I’m sure we’d all just love to sign one contract ever for. The first real vet contract though at outside CB could be around 100 mil. So 9 mil is sick for regular people. But in this environment it’s peanuts. Slot CB maybe at 50 by then.
June 8, 20251 yr I mean c’mon…it’s just that simple. 100 mil versus 50 mil. Even if Coop isn’t elite outside he still likely gets paid more than an elite Slot CB. Let’s not make him out as selfish and not a team guy chasing the money or anything. Just smart business anybody would do. He’s made 9 mil at the end of rookie contract. Not the kind of money to pass up chasing the 100 mil. With really hardly any downside. Maybe he doesn’t earn the 100 mil. But at least it was there for the taking outside. If he’s decent outside he’ll at least make what has to be super elite Slot CB pay….almost all likelihood going from elite Slot to decent outside CB is a pay raise.
June 8, 20251 yr So if your paycheck will be determined by one job and not the other…his focus and determination is outside. Maybe he goes Outside and just rocks it! Great! But I think outside he’s weaker than Slot and S…maybe even some of those hybrid LB roles. So Coop has a ton of work to put in. We’ll see how ready he is outside to begin the season. I actually would believe he’d be a liability outside if it was Gameday today. Now I’m making all kinds of leaps…that just can’t really be known. But odds I’d place on DeJean will be a work in progress outside for the beginning of the season…at least. Technique out there….number two WR ..tougher matchup…ready to take advantage of of any lesser missteps versus how he played the Slot.
June 8, 20251 yr So this is the very real problem I see with Coop you guys aren’t going to like. The more he needs to develop and work on his outside play? The more he will be pushing focus to do so. Easy to hop around positions if you play them all at a high level. But outside is his focus and payday. Essentially the one position he has to be at his best….is his least developed position. Not saying his weakest position yet. Unknown….my belief evaluating draft was…I was questioning can he play outside? Why was this a factor even? Because fans were talking about taking him in the first round. NFL….not just pay…but draft positioning. We took him real high for a Slot. But think you gotta give that up to Rosie and especially Fangio. Fangio I think place big value on his Slot defender in his D. One that’s versatile. Oh….that’s what the D Dr ordered to disguise and switch things up.
June 8, 20251 yr So just putting this right out here. If he’s struggling with just a few snaps a game outside? That’s going to be a problem for us. He’s going to want and need more…while it’s counter to being good for the team. If he just stinks…that would actually be alright. But he won’t just go back focusing on Slot instead of Outside….then he’s going to S. Just like CGJ.
June 8, 20251 yr It’s different …but still kind of the same…Deebo Samuel with the Niners. They got him playing RB and he really did great and what the team needed. But then he realized…holdup….RB pay sucks…WR money is fantastic! RB careers per carry just shortest career longevity position. WR very potential lengthy career. So Deebo came back the next season and refused RB role. (Which that year of RB I think took a toll…he won’t be signing anymore top market contracts)
June 8, 20251 yr Athletes choose between sports even. Good at Basketball and Football. B-ball guys make loot and lower wear and tear on the body with longer career longevity odds.

Don’t get all clouded by sport or whatever distractions…it’s business.
June 8, 20251 yr The harder the transition to outside is for Coop…the more time he’ll need focused out there. It’s only his second season. So his agent pushed him into getting snaps out there second year at least. No pressure to have outside CB nailed down this season. Year three though? If he struggles picking it up this season? He probably will need to force a full time just outside role year three.
June 8, 20251 yr AJ, Smitty and Hurts accepted sacrifice for the team AFTER getting huge payday. Sure still great character and teammates. After you extend Coop for like 80 mil let’s say….then ask him to play Slot? I’m sure he’d jump all over it with no problem….after he gets paid.
June 8, 20251 yr This is softball stuff. Not talking about some vet who’s signing his fourth contract after accumulating so much wealth taking a few mil less to play for a contender instead of Browns. 100 mil versus 50 mil. Who’s going to ask Coop to sacrifice for the team opportunity at 50 mil more? Especially on his first big contract.
June 8, 20251 yr Say it out loud as if you were Coop…”I’m not going to focus on the extra fifty mil…it’s not important.”
June 8, 20251 yr I wouldn’t even agree to participating in running any S drills or moving around to S at all now..if him. Not if he actually can play outside well. Which I believe is the biggest question mark position for him. I have no doubt Coop believes in himself. And that’s all that matters. Totally lock in getting to a high level outside CB before adding anything else. What would his agent or business manager advise? What would his financial advisor say? His family?
June 8, 20251 yr Two golf tournaments same weekend you feel confident placing high the same in either one….one has 100 mil pot to be earned by the players…..the other has 50 mil. If all things else are equal…you choose the 100 mil tourney every time.
June 8, 20251 yr What you guys think Micah Parsons will do? Think he’ll agree to half the pay? Or….will he not just look for getting that top pay….he’ll demand even more than that. 50 mil? 100 mil? Think he’s putting on cleats even for that money? He’s trying to push as close to earning 50 mil per season instead. Three year elite new record setting Slot CB pay…one season pay for others. Different positions pay different. Even some career longevity discrepancies. This is just fact here guys. Slot CB is garbage pay. Outside CB is a gold mine. S even much better than Slot. You might have noticed those QBs make a nice chunk of change. No GM or team is noticing hey…Saquan…you had the greatest season ever…let’s pay you top contract ever after top player performance. Did you notice Rosie offering 55 mil to the best RB? He broke all time records. Sick sick season! Got a raise..like 20 mil per season now.

Got a raise..like 20 mil per season now.But according to some here Rosie will just pay up top pay regardless of position if a player performs. 20 mil is a big deal for a RB. Micah Parsons would halt any further negotiations with Jerruh being insulted by 20 mil per. He’d start wearing Eagles hats and podcasting how he’ll never suit up for Cowboys ever again. But if you guys logic is sound…how much better a season could Saquan have produced? Greatest season ever been done. Smitty and AJ just got paid…did Saquan get their loot? Rosie broke the RB market for Saquan doing that. But …he never remotely considered paying him outside CB pay compared to Stingley. Saquan should get 60 mil per season according to some statements around here. Which can’t argue about would be fair. But not the NFL world at all. Greatest performance possible Saquan broke through to 20 mil as a RB. So maybe DeJean could prove very elite Slot CB. The best…by wide margin. Then he could break through the Slot market setting a new high mark. Maybe get 55 mil for three seasons. Rosie just goes all out breaking the bank for DeJean even…if he pulled in 10 interceptions…just showered the Slot CB with 60 mil for three years. I mean WOW! That’s three years from now as a tiny footnote. When today Stingley contract already been topped over 100 mil….today’s market.
June 8, 20251 yr Ceedy Duce wanted to get paid like a S because he played both positions even. Not one team offered to pay him S money as an elite Slot that played snaps at S even. We only ones hardly even bid trading for him. No extension and getting paid. We played him at S….our whole plan for him was starting S. Rosie still wouldn’t and didn’t pay him S money. But now Rosie will just do completely opposite of what he and any other GM has done…he’ll pay elite position top dollar to the lowest position paying job player, right? This close to what I’m hearing? Superhuman Barkley all time season…Rosie threw out positional pay…55 mil..here you go…you are the best player. Or did he go above and beyond to pay him 20? It was such a big deal Rosie coughed up 20 was actually the situation.
June 8, 20251 yr Jalen Hurts is a pretty good rusher. He’s probably been considering switching to RB. Isn’t that what we always see in the NFL? All these Oline T….switch to C. Does anybody even doubt half these T could play C? WR …are always trying to switch to TE instead. Heck in plenty of instances the job duties aren’t really different. Justin Jefferson said…”I’m fine with elite TE pay”…not "I’m going to be the highest paid nonQB" Justin Jefferson has his agent trying to force a position move to long snapper for him. That’s what all these players are doing, right?
