I agree with everyone on this. For the draft specifically...I'm with Ham ...take the best player... without going overboard in this position prioritization. At that exact point in time when you make your draft selection... the only thing that should matter is the players in that draft and who is available at that moment. You don't build your whole roster with one move, but if you take the best option at that moment....go ahead.

That leads to my thoughts about drafting the CBs last year....to me that's when best available just so happened to meet with the need and they made those moves. But also didn't over prioritize the lines during those moments.

Seems the same with Campbell this year. And really picks like Dickerson to me symbolized the shift, at that point the bigger need was DL...and everyone wanted that big DT...Larimore or whoever??? Dickerson to me symbolized that they went after who they thought was the best player. Same with Milton when everyone wanted a CB. Just take the player.

But I'm with Matt...you just can't spend all the money getting the best players in free agency at all the positions.

You got 32 destinations for free agents, they all aren't going to come here... not realistic and not really financially feasible.

According to CBS Sports Research, San Francisco's $264 million free-agent spending deficit from players lost to players acquired was the largest in NFL HISTORY.

Howie, like Hurts, has learned and progressed.

Hopefully can add Siri to this list

How did it go overboard?

Definitely went overboard in 2 ways...

1 Dream team... look at that defense. They signed Nnamdi and traded for that other CB from Arizona. While already having Assante.

Then they were 8 deep on the DL.

But LB and Safety were brutal... Casey Matthews and Nate Allen/ Kurt Coleman...three rookie starters... the other players at those positions weren't good either. But they also signed Steve Smith, Ronnie Brown and Vince Young on offense.

No priority to the middle of the defense that were going to be out there on all the downs.

Then a few years before... even with trades back to round 2 and taking Kolb ...in reality the first meaningful pick for 4 years in a row...was DL.

Patterson, Bunkley, Abiamiri and Laws.

That's 2005 to 2008.

Before that we had Corey Simon and McDougle drafted in round 1. That's a lot of emphasis on one spot that created neglect at other parts of the roster.

Going with the best player always works out. Forcing players by so heavily weighting positions doesn’t.

None of us have control of how the BPA hierarchy works out in any Draft. It is what it is. Do you believe Jihaad Campbell was not the best player on the Board when the Eagles picked? Or Q? Or Carter? Or Davis? Or DeVonta?

I would go even further … when in the last five Drafts has Howie ever forced a pick? Perhaps Trotter Jr.

then you have a team Like Dullaz who one year took 3 LB's the same draft(could be wrong I just got up and no coffee yet). After losing JJ to the Vikes by taking Reagor in that draft, Howie kicked his own arse after the Chip debacle where Howie was relegated to "accountant". Although that was a disaster, it was enough to get Howie moving on his own self betterment. Not a good look to remove Howies power, so Howie got to work to make sure that scenario never came back

By hiring HC that he wasn’t going to relinquish any power to

Already on it. Best CEO in the NFL. But didn’t start that way.

If you go back that far, I can agree. My horizon stops with SB LII

David wasn’t…clearly. We traded backwards…then traded back up for Smitty. But….Fangio got us the DBs so very clearly. 31st ranked pass D before that under woeful neglect by Rosie. Undrafted Blankenship worked out….but not because of the big investment.

Agreed. That plays out in the list of best GMs that GB posted the link to yesterday. Most of the teams have both the GM and the Head Coach listed

The Niners went All In…got them to the SB…but wasn’t enough. Id go even bigger into rebuilding that team if I was Lynch.

Davis absolutely was based on all the scouting and analytical assessments available at the time. He has NOT lived up to that potential so far, but that potential was clearly there.

But let’s assume for discussion purposes that Davis wasn’t the BPA at the time the Eagles picked that year. Who do you think was the BPA rather than Davis?

Agreed, and I would start by not extending Purdy.

This is where Howie and company have improved

Imo... the new regime started in 2016. .the new mentality.

Learn from past mistakes... the learning curve has no statute of limitations... it's nice to see LB drafted 1st, Safety taken 2nd....after two CBs last year.

To me, it seems they have targeted players, not position...and haven't panicked. This is for later rounds as well.

You don't hit on every pick...but I prefer them to miss because of the player not working out...not because of panicked picks or position priorities.

Everyone looks at Reagor over Jefferson... WR mistake.. I look at the possibilities of drafting another position there as well. Did we panic and go for a WR? Or just pick the wrong one?

Who knows? But I think they have targeted players more than positions in the last bunch of drafts...I think it has led to the success.

Howie drafted the players. Howie signed AJ.

You make a good point every so often and then fall back on the agenda where you have zero facts " just my feeling" ..ironically the " feeling " always fits the agenda.

You made your point for decades... can we stop now. We all know every good thing with the team is either the OC .... or Fangio... every bad thing is Siri or Howie’s fault.

Enough now!

SF went all in... 4 of 8 years not making the playoffs.... but in 2019 we were tight with the cap. So obviously SF did it the right way being how much ball licking you do for them

You can't figure that out with his obsession with the safety position?

And Lurie approved Chip and his demands. Howie is making sure Lurie never has that option again

I think Lurie absolutely knew what he was doing. If you look at how things went down....too many " coincidences" to think Lurie didn't have it all in mind of how he was going to move on.

Lurie will always have that option. The key is not to use that option.

Some nice WR's in that draft, we even picked one of them up in Dotson who was ranked at 30. Olave and Burks in that draft also

Didn’t need a WR after trading for AJ. They had AJ and Devanta so picking a WR would have been forcing a pick

Howe's been killin it

And if Davis puts it all together this season, he will have been killing it even more than he already has been. Sometimes you just have to be patient.
