By nature... that role does a lot of things.  So he has to learn as part of the position....cover slot, some centerfield....two deep ...  blitz...etc.  He should be fine. 

I'm looking at them just wanting Mitchell to be an outside shutdown guy.  That enables them to do more with every one else

Not really... Slay and Mitchell on the outside...vs the top WRs.  Move all around....meaning move all around the formation. 

I just keep getting caught up with what seems like the one universal weakness of DeJean in scouting reports being not possessing fluid hips. That’s a very huge feature I always look at out of DBs. Outside you can maybe get away not exposing it as much. You have the boundary and can play off or up in a receivers face. But in space…especially in the slot fluid hips is crucial. SS playing in the box fluid hips is crucial. But both these concerns are in pass coverage. SS and slot CB against the run he should be capable. My least concerns for DeJean would be as a single high S or with two high S looks. That’s where I’d start him off. Basically in FS roles. Quarters or covering half the field over the top split Cover 2. Back there with his eyes on everything in front of him to react to. Start there and work in disguises as the season and his comfort level rises.

Well I know you are going to hate this…but Quinyon has tons of experience playing ten yards off and reacting. Off man coverage or Cover 3 stuff. Doesn’t have the experience of Bump and Run duties. So even just learning outside there is so much to absorb. Man concepts are pretty straight forward in Off Coverage. But Fangio has to teach the Zones.

But yeah I’ve been tossing around how I view DeJean and how I’d try to work him in Fangio’s D for awhile now.

Again ... I don't hate anything.  My point is simple.  Mitchell engages outside on the WR...whatever scheme you want...that's where I would play him... to replace Bradberry. 

DeJean... I have him all over the place... covering RB, TE, an occasional slot guy, blitzing, centerfield, in the box etc.

The reason why I do this...is when I have Rodgers, Maddox, CGJ , Blankenship and DeJean on the field....any combo of that,  I want the QB confused. They all do a little of everything if needed.  But I would not use DeJean as an outside CB... Ringo jumps in there next.   Absolutely use Dejean more like the other DBs.

You want to call it safety...I'm ok with that.  But for me, I like my S to do everything. 

Not sure the timeline of your thinking here though I guess would be the key. Gotta start at square one here with everybody. But you just throwing the book at DeJean in TC and saying be everything? Or is this a year two, three…. career goal for him?

 

I see his main playmaking experience occurring as an outside CB. That’s what has my brain spinning some on how to approach his career. 

The next question is about P returner. I see DeJean as absolutely elite P returner. So what do we do there? Covey really came on last season. But Covey hasn’t shown any WR ability of worth. It’s a great problem to have. Do we just trade Covey?

 DeJean I’d see as elite gunner on ST also.

I’m not even trying to dive all into the new KO returns….other than I’d have to believe he’d be a very strong candidate there as well.

I liked it alot. I admit I don't know alot about Jalyx. They liked him and that is what matters. I got the slot WR I have been pushing since day 1. I'm glad they saw in him what I did. He should be that Amendola/Edelman type. The guy that can help bail Hurts out when protection breaks down. He is not or will ever be a #1 WR,but that's not his purpose and I think he will serve us well for the role he should assume. I felt we would press a little harder/be more aggressive for O line competition,but the fact we did a double dip in the secondary was excellent. I was hoping Howie would break tradition and he did-TWICE. So you can't get everything you want where you want them,but I was happy with this draft. I would be more than pleased if Jalyx works out.

I don't get your idea here?  Do you want the kid to play or not?    If he plays S...then play S.   Which involves doing everything a S does.   Do you want him to just stand 20 yards back and play deep?

This is an adult who has played DB for years.   With almost 5 months until game 1.   Hours and hours of class time, camp and preseason???

Hurts now needs to read the middle of the field. It's time for him to take the next step(s). Reads and decisions need to be faster. There are no more excuses left. he has a top RB as well and weapons at every position on the field

Here is the beauty.  You don't have to dive into any of this.  You can work on your running or whatever...the beauty is the Eagles do all this stuff and we get to watch. 

Figuring out DeJean's career path... shouldn't be a concern.  Should be more of something we look forward to seeing where it will go.

Extra 3rd, 4th and 5th.    

More ammo for trading for a vet.  To move up next year... or  just extra players to draft.

First :I think you could make the case for him possibly being an elite outside shutdown playmaking CB. So are we squandering that talent?
  He really hasn’t played S though. So he really doesn’t have tons of experience to lean into. But you’re oversimplifying S jobs. There are like 50 different S jobs. Just all those is a ton to digest.

I think he's great. Just from a game planning standpoint. If we play vs super fast WR's we can use him differently than a game where we face big possession receivers. I don't think he really gets defined at one spot. he has(and wants to have) the ability to move where he is needed. I would hate to tie a kids hands like that. He loves the game and just wants to play again

My answer is to have him ready to play game 1.   Throw it at him in whatever order you like. 

And it's not my concern how they do it. How the progression goes.

For me the next step does revolve around coaching and playcalling. Not to deflect responsibilities from Hurts. But the playcalling and routes have to reflect this. Just obviously, right? I’d like to see his main step of evolution be in throwing short quick accurate timing passing game.

 The other focus for me would be eliminating turnovers much more. A new O will almost always bring miscommunications not just from the QB…but blocking and receivers. So some of those are just going to happen. I’m not even reaching for perfection here. But he needs to hold on to the ball with better ball security being the main improvement.
