EMB Blog: 2025 Regular Season (Part 2) ... and Playoffs

The Commanders D is a mess, Tanner is a solid QB, Bigsby is a solid RB, our backup interior OL might actually be better than our starters given their health, and our "backup" TEs seem like much better blockers than the starters. This board is going to be a sheet show when the offense looks more competent this week than it has all year. Can't wait pizza

Congratulations on turning another topic into Hurts bashing. Are you guys on shifts?

He isn't a fit for that scheme, sorry.

The next OC will be Kafka anyway I think

Counterpoint -- Josh Johnson.

Any chance for good weather this weekend?

Good angle. Kind of think if alle tries to rifle it in there that Hunt is in the lane and it could potentially be deflected or even intercepted. If alle gets it up over the head of hunt with a lighter touch it has a higher chance for the TD to Shakir. however i think doing that way allows for Campbell to make up some ground. Not sure if Campbell can get there by the time the ball would get there though

I think cutting Hughlett to likely bring in Sam is their attempt to keep the secondary competitive. I suspect they trust Sam more than Brown

That looks like a designed roll out with what I assume was to be 3 receivers at different levels all moving right with Hurts. Either poor routes, great coverage that didn't allow the receivers to get to their spots, or poorly designed route concepts.

Again, if it’s the play I’m thinking of, it wasn’t a designed roll out. He hit his back foot, quickly scanned and took off.

The play was probably dead on arrival anyway based on the coverage and route spacing.

I get the argument -- Nick/Jalen are undefeated at home in the playoffs. But I think you need to factor in 3 things. First, we are likely still favored against Washington with our backups (we beat NYG last year, and Washington is just as bad). Second, you still are reliant on Chicago beating Detroit, which isn't a gimme. Third, and most importantly, you have key guys who need time off -- Lane, Cam, Landon and Mailata on the OL, all the DTs and DEs who have played a ton when JC was out, etc.

I think rolling the dice on the backups beating Washington is a good bet. Maybe you go from 80% chance to win to 60% chance, but the reward (rest) is worth the risk.

Assuming you mean DET beating CHI, but yeah it would be upgraded to a massive mistake if Chicago loses and so do we because we rested our starters. Everyone's gonna say hindsight is 20/20 after the fact but a first round exit against the Rams would be quite the end to a poorly mismanaged season by Sirianni.

A good throw to the back corner of the end zone, even with extra loft, wins the game. That’s wide open in the NFL.

I keep wondering what we'll do with that 53rd spot on the roster. If I had to bet, I'd guess they sign Andre Sam to the roster so that he and Brown can play this week, and Reed and Epps can sit the whole game. But doing so means you likely have to either (i) elevate Pierce and play him at LT, or (ii) play Mailata. Playing Jordan should be an absolute no, so I guess Hughlett and Pierce are called up, and we hope Tanner isn't murdered. You could activate Williams at OT, but then Epps likely has to play. Maybe you can play Carter at safety in base, and only put Epps on the field in nickel. In my mind, you'd rather lose McKee to injury than Epps, so that makes the call.

I'd elevate Sam, play Pierce/Toth/Kendall/Pryor/Fred upfront, and tell Tanner to get it out fast.

Oops, said that backwards.

Also, we'll know by Sunday morning if the Rams are locked into 6. If Seattle wins, then the Rams can become 5 by beating Arizona. Of those 3 teams, I'd most want to face Sam Darnold.

Here are the HC jobs that I think should/could be open this offseason:

Miami -- McDaniel simply isn't a head coach in this league as he does not command respect from players. I think Miami will keep him, but they should move on.

Cincy -- I think Zac Taylor will survive, likely because the Bengals are cheap and won't want to pay out his contract. But 3 straight seasons with no playoffs should get him canned.

Cleveland -- I wouldn't fire Stefanski; I'd fire Andrew Berry instead. But I think Haslam will fire Stefanski.

Indy -- Another one where I wouldn't fire the coach, but I think the new owner will clean house.

LV - Pete Carroll is done and should never have been hired in the first place.

NYG - Already open. It is absurd the GM is keeping his job.

TB - I think they have to move on after this collapse (assuming they miss playoffs). It looks like the team quit.

ATL - I list it as possible, but I think Morris keeps his job (I would give him one more year). The real issue seems to be the QB.

ARZ -- Gannon is dead man walking

I’d actually fire Morris. I don’t think he’s a good HC. About to go 7-10 or 8-9. He was 8-9 last year. He has been a full time head coach for 5 seasons and has 1 winning season. I know their issue is Qb, but he’s a defensive guy and that defense has gotten worse as the season has gone along. Since they played that great game against Buffalo, the defense has given up 26 ppg (11 games).

I’m for playing to win this game while scoreboard watching. The potential two seed is massive. San Francisco’s offense is incredible but the defense stinks. There is no guarantee they win their playoff opener

My hope would be for the starters to build a lead and get McKee and other backups in the game in the second half. Hopefully Washington is ready for Cancun while our backups are fired up to be playing and we win anyway.

I think it points out the main issue with the throw is Allen felt the pressure and let it go too early. If he sets his feet and throws it towards the corner of the end zone it's an easy completion -- but that's what sustained QB pressure gives you. It makes the QB uncomfortable, even really good QBs.

Yeah, thats really the throw he had to make. He was going to have to loft it and get it up. However it looked like he was rifling it with whatever decision he was going to make.

I said this right after the game. Hunt is absolutely in the throwing lane. It’s a tough throw. Low football IQs love to hate Hurts and Allen.

Anyone else heard of the 150,000$ Panthers fan? I’m starting to love that song. Dude needs to be rich

I would have to see the whole play but that still sure makes it seem like he’s running out of a super clean pocket for no reason.

The line dropped from -7.5 to -3.5. Vegas thinks our backups will win.

It's a late game in the cold weather and the only thing between the Commanders a trip to the beach.

Rest our starters. Protect them from the Dan Quinn vengeance tour. I have little confidence that Detroit will win on Sunday anyway.

You have just shown the world that you have a low football IQ.

It seems to me there might be an unusually low number of HC openings this year. How many do you see? TEN, NYG and then maybe ARZ and LV. Who else?

I could see Atlanta. I think there will maybe be one surprise team too like a Cleveland, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh.

It’s really weird that the pathetic O-line making 90 less running lanes for Saqoun is obvious but then they just can’t grasp that the same holes are not there for Hurts. This line is weak and soft. They do not get push. They do not create holes. Patullo makes it 500x worse by adding Calcaterra into the mix. They can’t hold a block at all. They get shoved backwards.

They block each other all the time. Fred’s ankles were towards the heavens as Ocho said.

Watch our good pass rushers just disappear sometimes vs good blocking. Now watch whatever the hell Mailata was doing on the AJ TD pass in LA.

This is not age or doctrine keeping Hurts from running. It’s terrible OC and no place to run.

Note: this does not include playing on a slip and slide in week 17. I think that was strategy.

Eagles still pretty heavy favorites even with backups playing.

They should be able to win anyway because Tanner Fing McKee. I really do think the Lions could win because I think Campbell will pull out all the stops to not end the season like chumps and also doesn't want to be shown up by Ben Johnson, but I'd feel better about it if the Lions OL wasn't playing like a sieve right now. They've been awful and haven't been able to block anybody the last month. You wonder if they fall behind early if they just check out given the cold weather.

Pittsburgh if they lose is the team. Frankly ravens or Pittsburgh depending on who loses should make a change. Imo ravens should cause watching that team consistently find ways to try to lose games and are just low. IQ is reason enough. That team has lost so many games because of just plain low IQ stupid football over the last couple years. I know Harbaugh won a Super Bowl in 2012 but at some point in time that can only Have so much cache.
