EMB Blog: 2025 Regular Season (Part 2) ... and Playoffs

In my mind, McKee has never not played well with the Eagles. Ever. Every game he’s played in, he’s been borderline fantastic. I think it would be kinda silly at this point to think he’s not a good quarterback.

Most of us (95% maybe) think he is very good.

Lots think he is the best backup in the league.

Some, me included, think he might be a top 20 starter.

Hurts was a SB MVP and puts up 30 TDs every year with low turnovers and is a dangerous run pass combo.

He's one of 4 or 5 guys in history with 2+ TDs a game regular season and playoffs (Rodgers, Brees, Allen, I may be missing one)

Its the delusion that McKee is clearly better than Hurts that is at issue.

Fair.

I do wonder if they'll prioritize winning over development with CB decisions.

Carter has shown nothing.

Ringo/Bennett on the outside, McWilliams in the slot. I doubt who plays NCB is the deciding factor on goin for the win or not.

Getting as much knowledge on Bennett, McWilliams, Ty Robinson, the entire 1st year OL, Gabe Hall could go a long way with offseason moves. Do they show anything that says this guy can contribute next year.

The added $3.214M of 2026 cap cost comes from the Yr. 4 proration of his original $12.8M signing bonus, which can't be avoided. Here's my guesstimate of the proposed Carter deal, which uses Chris Jones top of market 2024 deal as a comp as far as total value and AAV.
- Minimum salaries from 2026-2030 (G'teed salaries from 2026-28)
- $35M SB
- $30M 2027 OB fully g'teed
- $25M 2028 OB guaranteed on 3rd day of 2027 league year (Practical g'tee)
- They may go so far as to g'tee a small portion of his $30M 2029 OB on the 3rd day of the 2028 LY

- $35M OB in 2030

- Some Incentives/Escalators for DPOY and SB Win

- Void years in 2031-34

In essence it's $97M over 3 years. While you are correct that it's not all new money it does sets the DT record for:
- Full Guarantee at signing/Cash Flow over 1st 2 years: $70.6M v. Jones's $60M
- Total Guaranteed at signing: $97M v. Jones's $95M
- Annual AAV of total contact: $32.38M v. Jones's $31.6M

Finally, disagree about the accuracy of Spotrac v. OTC

Good catch, I missed the signing bonus - gets me to $9.7mm on a 3 year, $100mm new money extension. $26.5mm signing and min salary.

I wouldn't use CJ as a comp, as Howie has moved away from larger signing bonuses and then smaller option bonuses in subsequent years. Baun's singing bonus and option bonus in 2026 are basically the same amount. He did front load cash to Smitty, so maybe he does again (Smith got $20.3mm to sign, $12.5 and $14mm in cash comp the next 2 years after that), but we did the exact opposite with Hurts (only $23mm signing, $39mm option bonus in 1st year). So he's somewhere between 9.5 - 11.5mm.

We have evidence he can play well

Not in a meaningful game. He hasn’t played in one.

Its not as much about the individual stats. So much as how illuminating it is when you see what these coaches are capable of when they know they have a QB on the field.

Again, imagine if we had even an average offense paired with this D…

Yeah most likely. It probably wont feel good to move on from Baun then, but at least you can say youre sticking with the two younger options.

Right now, youre letting go of a really, really good LB for no good reason at all.

Well, $ is a reason… so you can keep other players.

His only regular season action has been against very sheety teams who have packed it in at the very end of the year. I’m very hopeful and the limited eye test has looked great but he is simply unproven at this point.

Agreed, he’s looked good and that’s great but we’ve seen QBs have entire good rookie years only to regress and people are basing this ‘greatness’ on a small low quality sample

The ideal scenario, other than for the insufferable sports talk radio chatter, is for McKee to light it up Sunday, and then we look to move him to a QB needy team that won't be in a position to draft one. Some candidates are: Miami (assuming they are 100% done with Tua), Jets (draft pick might be high enough to get a rookie), Cleveland (neither rookie they have looked good), Indy (depends on Daniel Jones who is a FA and hurt), Arizona (depending on Murray). I skipped LV as I think they take Mendoza, and New Orleans will roll with Shough. The issue is anyone trading a real pick will also want to extend him, and will any team do that based on a few games -- give up a day 2 pick and commit money to an unproven guy.

This is why we should keep him too. Because good QB's can be hard to find. Just overpay him somewhat to stay as the backup. Always good to have options in case Jalen gets hurt or wets the bed.

I can understand that.

Id add that Campbells perceived versatility makes it so that you can easily get them all on the field. One does not have to go to free up playing time for him. And I dont feel obligated to hand him a starting job in year 2 considering that while he has done a lot of excellent things especially in coverage, the D overall has looked better with Dean in his place.

Just got the notification we're going to rest some starters. I thought there was still a chance to get a higher seed? Interesting

Ive been imagining all year. Makes it that much more frustrating watching this team.

In the scenario vikas posted, there is money to keep him.

You guys are focused on the wrong thing. Or the right thing if your only point is to try to shield Hurts from criticism. The focus shouldnt be mainly on how good McKee has looked, rather, how good the offense looks and flows when he allows the coaches to call an NFL style game.

Solid point here:

I didn't know his passion for playing was in question. Was it just because he's having a down year that's likely from his shoulders?

The big issue is the backup secondary

Shoot out!

Here's how I think we play it Sunday:

QB: McKee, Howell backup

RB: AJ Dillon gets most of the work, some Shipley, Bigsby dresses but doesn't play

WR: Cooper, Dotson and Covey. Neither AJ nor Smitty see the field. I don't think Smitty is close enough to 1,000 yards to risk it (44 yards)

OL: Pierce (PS elevation), Toth, Kendall, Pryor, Fred. Jordan, Steen and Cam/Landon have to dress, but they don't see the field unless someone gets hurt

TE: Calcaterra and Granson mainly

Edge: Uche, Hunt and Smith - we have limited options here to rest these guys. I can't imagine they have BG eat snaps at his age. Maybe Campbell plays some edge snaps

DT: Young and Robinson, with Ojomo playing a handful of snaps

LB: Mondon and Trott

CB: Ringo, Bennett and McWilliams

Slot: Carter

Safety: Sam (added to 53) and Smith

Who is Smith at S?

There is. But I think getting some rest, preventing injury against a WA team that will cheap shot and is butthurt over a 2pt conversion is the smart move.

Just when I think this guy can't be any dumber...yeah, we have room on the 53 for this

He also said McKee shouldn’t see the field so we need a backup QB as well. Maybe we can get a one day LS too.

Easier said than done. If he’s getting overpaid to be a backup, he’s going to want to leave to get the chance to be the guy and get starter money.

It was a lot of pre-draft stuff, and showing up to the combine overweight and quitting his workout halfway through because he was tired. There was a lot of smoke about his college coaches questioning his work ethic although it was all anonymous so not clear if it was staffers or actuals coaches.

The LG and C better not play this week. Give them an extra week to get their collective heads out of their arses and remember how to play NFL FOOTBALL.

I just hope whomever suits uo and plays tomorrow considers themselves an Eagle playing to win a regular season game to put us in a better position going into the playoffs, and not treating this like a pre-season exhibition simply to appear on tape for where the offseason takes them.
