Might be back for the playoffs. 8 hours ago, JohnB said: How about Hargrave? Went to SF and was an immediate upgrade on an already very talented defense. I'm not blaming Howie, btw. Losing Hargrave has been the biggest hit on the defensive side of the ball and it isn't close. He would collapse the pocket consistently, had 11 sacks last year and has 7 for the 49'ers this year. Unfortunately they were never going to be able to match the offer.

Carter started the year on fire but I think he’s hit the rookie wall which was always likely to happen. Hargrave is such a force in terms of pass rushing and that’s so important to be able to collapse the pocket and move the QB off their spot.

It's also not a coincidence that Sweat's numbers dipped as Carter hit the wall. I think Sweat benefited the most from having Hargrave next to him. He hasn't had a sack in the last 7 games

He’s still put up good numbers but I don’t think he’s impacted games the same way but again I think he benefited from that collapsed pocket. With his speed that was perfect for him.

Reddick exploded after the cast came off but hasn't had a sack the last 3 weeks. I think the Cards game was his worst of the season, the other ones he at least looked like he was getting pressure.

His sack numbers are still good but he’s just not impacting games like he was.

January 2, 20242 yr This does come back to the cap management question, I know we talk about this every year and we never go over the cap, but the difference is we haven't had a lot of cap to spare since the Alshon Jeffery year, so whereas the 49ers can go to the NFC Championship game last year and then splash in free agency and trades on players like Hargrave and Chase Young to get better and get them over the hump the next season, we got to the Superbowl and got worse by losing Edwards, Hargrave, Gardener-Johnson and Seumalo. Edwards and Hargrave in particular would've improved the defense out of sight, instead we get washed ex pro bowlers and sketchy starters cut from other teams on short term rentals. There's no quick road out of this, in fact with players like Smitty and Dickerson coming up on the end of their rookie deals it may get worse before it gets better, we've been robbing Peter to pay Paul for a few years and the bill is coming due.

Having a 7th round rookie QB contract at the most expensive position in football will allow you to do that

Lance who was also on a rookie contract and Jimmy G who was worth 7 mill? Lance counts for an 8 mill dead cap hit this year. They're paying Purdry peanuts and Darnold like 5 mill. The Giants cap hit for Daniel Jones is 15 mill this year. Of course they're going to be able to stack the roster when they're paying F all at the QB position. The Eagles did the same thing when Wentz was on his rookie deal. But try again
January 2, 20242 yr Not sure how anyone can see the complete incompetence that is currently happening with our coaching staff (with a pro-bowl roster on offense) and somehow thinks it’s Howie’s fault. Stick to playing Madden and fantasy football if you’re one of them.

Those weren't huge contracts though. They were certainly able to do Hargraves and Young thanks to Purdy. Eventually though they will have to pay the QB so this may be their last shot with this loaded roster. Eagles missed theirs :(

Go back to playing Madden if you’re one of them. Howie hired and signed off on the coaching staff. Additionally the Howie blame is based on the perceived micromanagement of the schemes/philosophy, the total disregard of the importance of LBs, and the mistakes with the secondary. Trading away DL depth during the season and not replacing it came back to bite as well. I think everyone thought we'd bring back Suh and another DE to eat up snaps. It never happened and now the DL is burned out. He certainly has his share of blame in this collapse.

Who is responsible for our decade long refusal to treat Linebacker and Safety as serious positions on an NFL roster? Desai or Sirianni? Who's responsible for the cap management that is done by continually backloading contracts that means we've been bumping along the bottom of available cap space since 2017? Brian Johnson? Hell who appoints our coaching staff? Is it the guy playing Madden?

Not sure when that narrative started but it’s a bunch of nonsense. Do you know what messes up a solid D Line? Having your top pass rusher run around all over the field in pass coverage. That’s what hurts the D Line.

Hell who appoints our coaching staff? Is it the guy playing Madden? Howie hires head coaches and typically lets them bring in their own coaching staff (with some exceptions, like keeping some of our better coaches like Stoutland on board, etc) The entire reason Doug Pederson moved on is because the Eagles wanted to replace his coaches and he refused to let them go. What does that tell you? It tells you the head coaches are the ones responsible for bringing their coaches in with some input from the Front Office.

Someone broke down the ridiculous amount of snaps that they have already taken this year compared to last. The discrepancy is great. Especially when it comes to the rookie and 2nd year Davis. Even ancient Cox has taken a significant amount of snaps. Not being able to get off the field on 3rd down because of the LBs and Secondary took its toll. If you can't see that this isn't typical when they thrived with a rotation and keeping guys fresh over the years I don't know what to tell you.

Why is that happening? Because our genius play callers are playing soft coverage defense (our weakness) instead of applying pressure to the QB (our strengths). This is an 80% coaching issue and 20% personnel issue on defense and a 95% coaching issue on offense.

There's no saving them. They've been trying to compensate for poor LB play with the 5 man fronts and that jacks the rotation. Cornerbacks and Safeties can't cover with the exception of Slay. Personnel on defense is way bigger a problem than you are suggesting. I would argue this was a retooling year for the defense. Yes the scheme also stinks. It can be both.
January 2, 20242 yr We have a PRO BOWL roster on offense. If we score as much as we should be scoring, we could allow 30 points a game on defense (still inexcusable) and still have a winning record. Andy Reid with this exact personnel on offense would average 40 points per game. There, I said it.

But how is the offense going to score all of those points if the defense can't get off the field?
