Anything’s possible, but considering every draft genius/non genius had Parsons at the minimum as the 3rd best defensive player in the draft.  Quite a few had him at number 1, which reminds me, I have to pull him down off the Avatar for Moehrig.

I don't disagree that Parsons isn't transcendent, but I am positing that in the view of Dallas, they didn't want to miss out on Parsons, and 20 would have likely pushed them out of that possibility, and getting Davis doesn't mean that they would have been as happy with him as Parsons.  Recall, Parsons was talked about early on in the draft process as being a top 5 or so prospect.   Davis, on the other hand, was a late riser.   Paye, Farley and Darrisaw are not even close to the same level of prospect as Parsons.   (It is by no means authoritative, but just for illustration purposes...  nfl.com had Parsons as the 6th highest rated player in this draft, Surtain being 5th.   Darrisaw is 18th, Paye 19th, Farley 30th.  That's a dramatic drop off.  And if Dallas had similar grades, then you can see why they wouldn't want to take the chance of missing specifically on Parsons, arguably a top 6 talent for guys that are in the mix of the 'drop-off'. )

 

Maybe the way the Cowboys screwed up was in overvaluing Parsons, but I don't think that their logic was flawed in turning down the Bears deal in order to get Parsons, assuming their level of evaluation of him was as high as #6, just as I don't think the Eagles' logic was flawed in getting their target when he was head and shoulders the highest rated player on their board (nfl.com has Smith as the #3 overall prospect behind only Lawrence and Pitts).

You could say this about every team’s bad decision. Of course from their own perspective it’s good.

IMO Slater would have been a much bigger impact player for them. He would have helped solidify their aging OL for a while. 

Both LVE and Smith are major question marks due to injury.   And because of that I think the motivation to get Parsons was even higher, and then if they choose, they could look to move either or both if they want to now.

 

In other words, I don't think it was as big a mistake as others.   Its fun to point and laugh at Dallas, but I don't think this is a spot.  They got added value with the trade back with the Eagles and still got a guy they were likely very happy to land.  I don't think they panicked.  I think Surtain was likely their top target, but were happy to take Parsons and only took the Eagles' deal knowing the Eagles have no interest in LBs in Round 1, and correctly calculated that the Giants would trade out and they'd be able to get Parsons with the added benefit of the 3rd rounder.

No, I'm saying this is a 2-year process.  BPA at 37 could be one of those elite slot WR.  If you can surround Hurts with ELITE talent, he looks a lot better.

Dallas has never cared about character issues.   If the issues won't take him off the field, its a non-factor there with their philosophy.

 

They got a top 10 talent plus an extra 3rd round pick, rather than a guy that might not be a 1st round talent in other years (the suggested options in place of Parsons being Paye, Darrisaw, Farley, or Brown).   I think of it more like the 'bird in the hand is better than two in the bush' type of move.  

 

I'm not saying that you are wrong, but I see that their move has a defense and it is not an abject failure.

We drafted 3 receivers last year.  Between this year and last, we drafted 2 in the first round.  Can't you find any other position to address besides receiver? This isn't Madden.

I hope teams try to jam Smith at the line. Every time I’ve seen anyone try they can’t get their hands on him and he sidesteps and runs by them.
