The draft pick that would be offered in return would in all likelihood be a Day 3 pick, which is obviously better than nothing, but not much to get excited about (unless it's a high 4th rounder?). I think we're well past the time where we could get a 3rd round pick for Ertz with the poor production this season and contract negotiation issues.

Realistically, I see us getting a 5th for Ertz at best with the other guys available in free agency already (Rudolph, Cook, etc.)

Even with that crap year he is still 2nd in catches 3rd in yards and 3rd in first downs since 2018.

I was also going to say we heard this exact thing about Wentz, but I do believe Ertz will have a better market

Well, if you want to go with that comparison: The first thing heard was that it may be hard for them to even get rid of Wentz, and that they might need to add a pick for it to happen.

Then ultimately we got a decent deal (though I hoped for more). With Ertz it started at "maybe a 6th or 7th", now we hear "day3"... Let's wait and see.

That said, I guess we can be happy to have any return at all on this one. A fourth would be nice!

I'm actually hopeful of a 3rd. It sounds like there is more of a market for Ertz than Wentz. Teams can't just wait for his release as they will have competition.

Ertz is only 30 (a year younger than Kelce) and could make a real difference to a contender. Hopefully Eagles can play teams off against each other and get at least a low third.

If its not at least a 4th, then your better off releasing him and getting a better comp pick for 2022. Im sure he will sign a nice enough contract to at least land a 4th.

Unless I'm mistaken, no comp pick if you release a player while they are still under contract.

If we don't get at least a 4th, I'd almost be tempted to keep him. The cap saving isn't huge and we could potentially trade him in season.

But there's a market and I do think we will get a 4th at least.

Ertz has been good for the team.  He might have a poor season, but it was not completely due to him.  Can understand why they would move on from him for cap and/or rebuilding.  But he can still be productive even staying put.

On the other hand, they traded Wentz away.  The Seahawls are entertaining trades for Wilson.  Nothing seems impossible in NFL now.

The team will be very different from the SB team with most of the established vets no longer around.

You can't get a comp pick for releasing a player.

To be honest given where we are in terms of getting under the cap, we're already eating $50million in dead cap once Jeffery is released, releasing Ertz adds another $8million we can't spend, I don't believe a team can go into a year spending almost 30% of the cap on ex players, so I think a release is less likely than some might think. I think they have him play it out and then let him walk for a comp pick next season.

It's guaranteed money Eagles are paying that 8million no matter what they do with Ertz.

They're not paying it if they trade him,  which is why a trade is the only way he goes pre June 1st.  According to OvertheCap if we cut him June the 1st we gain 4 million in cap (8mill savings against 4mill dead cap).

Correct, nor lose a comp pick for signing a released player (hence why we rushed to sign Malik Jackson). It’s strictly Free Agents.

How much would Zach Ertz cost if the Eagles traded him and his contract?

Zach Ertz’s contract structure at this stage means the Eagles would have the same dead money if they released or traded him. Therefore, in a trade, the Eagles would be left with $7.77 million in dead money.

ZACH ERTZ

Cut or trade: $4.7 million cleared ($7.8 million in dead money)

Ertz is reportedly drawing trade interest from multiple teams. The Eagles can’t rely on trading him to get under the cap, though, since those savings don’t come into effect until AFTER the new league year begins. If the Eagles receive a worthwhile offer for Ertz, they’ll have to clear enough space to temporarily keep him past the league year. If the Eagles don’t receive a worthwhile offer for Ertz, they’ll likely just cut him to clear the cap space.

So you agree with me if they can't trade him for a pick, releasing him before June 1st would be stupid, because cutting him at the start of the league year saves nothing.

Cutting him or trading him at the start of the league year has the same dead cap hit and the same savings.  Also, you can only designate two players a post June 1 cut, they restructured Jeffrey and Malik Jackson's contracts to be post June 1 cuts, so they would have to actually wait until June 1st to release him, which does not help the Eagles at all in getting under the cap, having money to resign their own players, sign draft picks, and possibly get a free agent or two.

The Eagles are still 35 million over the cap, so someone has to go to get to even by next Wednesday, and Zach Ertz has the biggest cap savings available.

I know our f'ing cap position, they can't designate Ertz as an early June 1st release, if they release him by next Wednesday he puts $8million in the dead cap pot but we save $4million on what we'd pay if he was here, we save $8million if we release him June 1st, but we can't use that to get under the cap by next week.

According to OvertheCap the biggest saving is cutting Barnett which gives $10million which is why that will definitely happen, along with Goodwin $4.5million because they both have no dead cap anchors, but beyond that to get $35million is going to take some doing, because our big players are all on big dollars dummy yeared out the wazoo, Cox, Graham, Johnson and Brooks are pretty much locked in because the dead cap is prohibitive this year, honestly I could see McLeod, Maddox and even Goedert shopped around to trim another $4-6million.

But you could release 25 of last years 53 and not make it under the projected cap.

I have to think that Howie is counting on the rumours of the cap landing closer to $195million than 180million after the TV money is added up being true.

Barnett will get a new deal to lower his cap number, and Goodwin will be cut.  Ertz will be traded to start the league year, or cut.  Whether or not you think it is the right move is irrelevant.  The Eagles have to shed 35 million in cap room in 8 days, so the Ertz move will be made out of necessity.

i just don't see them tendering Barnett given where we are cap wise and they turned down his 5th year,  he's 10 million unguaranteed against the cap, I think if they're going to hand out a contract on the DL, they'll try and extend Sweat for a backloaded 5 years and then find rotational guys in the draft.

https://www.inquirer.com/eagles/derek-barnett-eagles-exercise-fifth-year-option-20200427.html

The Eagles are exercising the fifth-year option on defensive end Derek Barnett’s contract, an NFL source said.

My bad I read a couple of months back that a long term extension was a question mark because he was OK but not what you hope for from a first rounder who broke Reggie White's college sack record, I could've sworn it said they hadn't taken up his 5th year but seeing his salary I should've known.

Either way for his level of production he'd have to offer me a massive discount on $10miilion to persuade me he should be kept around ahead of a rotational vet on minimum and more snaps for Sweat.  I've been waiting 3 years for Barnett to kick on, but his progress is a flat line, Sweat looks to have a higher ceiling at this point.

Howie was texting Ertz trying to set up a call to discuss but he was in the other room.  His wife called him in and said Howie's texting you.  Zach came running in from the other room, his wife handed him the phone then he immediately fell onto the ground.

Less than a week away from Ertz being released.

That's exactly what is going to happen because the chargers are not franchise tagging hunter henry. That makes another cheaper option available.
