Idk why they have perk doing draft coverage. He is horrible at it. I have to imagine they have better analysts then him who watched these kids more.

I don't remember him shooting a lot of corner 3s. My main issue with him was he never developed much of ball handling skills to be more of a lead guard so he was stuck between positions. 

He absolutely loves his step back 3 and is really streaky. I thought he loved it a bit too much with 16 seconds left on the shot clock  instead of attacking downhill which he is pretty good at and became frustrating to watch 

He is a a better on ball defender than Thybulle and can guard both positions so can take the the main guy for Harden or Maxey.

[Rich Hofmann] On free agency, Daryl Morey mentioned that the Sixers will be under CBA constraints (mini mid-level and minimums, likely). Said there are "maybe 8-12 options" that will be in that price range, can contribute and be in the playoff rotation.

Four years ago, Sixers president of basketball operations Daryl Morey took Melton with the No. 46 pick, envisioning him playing alongside James Harden for the Houston Rockets. That never came to pass because Melton was traded to the Phoenix Suns two months later before ever playing in Houston. Now, after a stop in Memphis where Melton established himself as the kind of impact defender Morey surely expected, that plan will finally play out in Philadelphia.

Playing off the bench for the Grizzlies, Melton developed into a reliable shooter (39% from 3-point range the past two seasons) who offers one of the league's better combinations of rebounds, steals and blocks from the backcourt. Melton is stretched a bit as a lead ball handler but won't likely have to play that role much for the Sixers alongside Harden and Tyrese Maxey. Meanwhile, his shooting differentiates him from new teammate Matisse Thybulle, also an ace perimeter defender.

From Philadelphia's standpoint, Melton's descending contract (which pays him $8.25 million in 2022-23 and $8 million in 2023-24) was surely appealing. The 76ers could rightfully believe Melton is far better (and younger; he's still just 24) than anybody they could have signed by using their non-taxpayer midlevel exception this summer.

With Melton on the books instead of Green's non-guaranteed contract, Philadelphia will presumably now be limited to the smaller taxpayer midlevel exception. Having both that and Melton is preferable in the short term to having the No. 23 pick and the non-taxpayer exception. Melton probably won't start for the Sixers, who presumably want more size on the perimeter, but he could finish games alongside Harden and Maxey depending on the matchups.

Down the road, Philadelphia might miss having a first-round pick on a rookie contract. The 76ers will send next year's first-rounder to the Brooklyn Nets as part of the Harden trade and owe a top-six-protected pick to the Oklahoma City Thunder from the deal to acquire Green. That leaves Philly with just one first-round pick over the next three years.

This is a great pickup for the Sixers. Green tore his ACL and LCL back in mid-May. Maybe he comes back next season or maybe he decides to call it quits after 13 years in the NBA and three championships. He was unlikely to contribute to Philadelphia this season. So they move his salary attached to the 23rd pick and end up with De’Anthony Melton. That’s a brilliant value play by president of basketball operations Daryl Morey. Melton fits perfectly into everything Morey wants out of his complementary guards.

Melton is a hellish defender and gets after everybody. He’s 6 foot 3 with nearly a 6-foot-9 wingspan and can handle anybody on the perimeter. He’s good on the ball and off the ball. His athletic ability, tenacity and execution on that end of the floor pass the eye test and then some. His numbers pass the analytics test, as well.

Since coming into the NBA in 2018, Melton is the only player in the league to log at least 200 games while shooting at least 36.0 percent from 3-point range and grabbing a 3.0 percent steal rate. He’s one of just five players in NBA history to play at least 200 games with a 36.0 percent or better 3-point accuracy and a steal rate of at least 3.0 percent. Chris Paul, John Stockton, Charlie Ward and Pablo Prigioni are the other four.

Melton is a much improved outside shooter and a much more controlled attacker off the bounce than what we saw when he first came into the NBA. He shot 29.4 percent on 235 attempts from deep in his first two seasons. In his last two seasons, Melton improved to 38.8 percent on 583 attempts from downtown. He doesn’t turn the ball over nearly as much as he used to. He’s a good rebounder for his size and position. Overall, Melton is just an extremely valuable role player, and he has two more seasons under contract at a total of $16.5 million, which is a great value.

He’ll fit nicely next to James Harden. He’ll fit nicely next to Tyrese Maxey. And you can even play him with both guys on the floor at the same time. The odds of the Sixers getting a ready-made player at 23 in this draft were very low. That’s how you execute

I look at it this way. He’s 24 averaging 10.8 in 22.7 mins. Those mins are going to increase to at least 28-30. If the sixers get him as their 6th man off the bench playing good perimeter defense and scoring up to 13-15 a night that’s good bench production especially at 8.25 mil per season. He has some frustrating tendencies like Da4life talked about but we were never getting a perfect player and for the value it’s worth it. The thing about selecting someone at 23 is doc is never going to play him enough to get experience and trust him in the playoffs. And most of the kids there aren’t going to be able to give you what melton can over them next two years as a main guy off the bench

The sixers still need to add bench pieces. But really the biggest issue is a wing who can defend and shoot threes. Hard to find quality ones cheap or where the sixers are in terms of cap space. It’s why thybulle’s failure to improve his shooting really hurts the sixers. I think there’s some guys who’ll definitely help in free agency but you aren’t getting a high caliber guy. You are getting a average to solid player that’ll help. Problem is like KD said last night it’s a wing league and the sixers haven’t drafted or developed wings since Roco. And we complained about Roco but he was still more competent than thybulle

Another Memphis fan with their opinion of Melton.  Also, if Green is bought out, would we try to re-sign him depending on what else we do?

 

My 2 cents:

He is a cheerful guy who always smiles. His nickname is Mr. Do Something as he makes many nice little plays and, most importantly, always makes his teammates better. His +/- is always among the top in the team, very often just the best. He struggles with creating a shot and cannot be a primary option. He is a supplemental piece, who has developed his 3pt shot from nothing to the very decent level. He is rather intuitive but very solid defender. Overall, he is about bringing positive impact on the court in every regard. Think about a light version of Maxey. They should be a deadly backcourt.

I believe on the green front there’s a rule (nba instituted a whole back) where if he’s bought out now, the sixers have to wait a certain amount of time before they can sign him. It was to prevent teams from making trades knowing the guy was going to be bought out and then just brought back immediately. Probably would be able to considering he’s likely out til February at the earliest.

Even better knowing he is out, he could be cheap.  We won't need him healthy until last 1/3 of the year and playoffs.  Might give him time to heal and be useful off the bench.  He can still shoot the corner 3 well.
