I have not worked on a COVID team. That is true. My students and I have published peer reviewed papers on disease transmission and on the evolution of virulence.

I’ve published 5 journal articles on COVID so far, all on Neuro related issues.  That doesn’t make me an expert.  The more we dive through the data...and these are my residents, statisticians, and epidemiologists who know a lot more than I...the further we go down this rabbit hole the less we know.

Death certificates, discharge summaries, all unreliable.  Data from first world Western European countries...garbage.

We’ve made better assertions about mortalities from funeral item purchases than we have from medical records in many places.

There are no experts on this.

I mentioned this previously on this board, and in the past years ago on the other board.   I'm not sure Howie has ever come out and said it this plainly, but Howie is telling the truth here.

I'm torn on the whole corona thing. I agree with wearing of masks, but I also think the thing has been politicized and is being used as a weapon.

It’s a real thing being politicized, that’s all.

Uh...is our president not requesting that we test less often? You don’t think they’re fabricating our numbers?

I know our numbers are unreliable.

There is no separating politics and our national response to the pandemic. It starts at the very top, and it continues to be poorly handled. Competence and empathy would go a long way.

I would say as some have pointed out, it has been poorly handled by both political parties and also I  believe that some stats are being manipulated.

Poorly handled by both sides is giving our president a pretty big pass. He’s been a disaster.

Ehhh, Warner didn’t have a ten year tear. He had 3 great seasons.

I think Cox has a chance. He’s already a 5 time pro bowler and is generally recognized as one of the top 3 interior defensive lineman of his generation. He made the NFL all decade team, which is usually a great sign you’re going to get a gold jacket and he’s still only 29 years old. 2 or 3 more pro bowl level years and he’s a lock IMO.

Cox should be a HOF.  I think Kelce deserves consideration now.  Ertz is another one that could be in if he continues to play at the same level of the next 5 seasons.

There are no experts on this.

Of course there are experts on this. Does that mean we know everything we need to know? No. Does it mean that we cannot make reasonable predictions? No. Does it mean we cannot explore possible sources of error and quantify their impacts on the models? Again, no.

The same criticism (lack of perfect knowledge) can be leveled against theories of gravity and aerodynamics, yet planes fly.

Today I learned Vince Carter is still in the NBA.

uh huh, there are many arguments, you (everyone) just picks the one that fits their political narrative. Misinformation also abounds.

I think if we can somehow win another Super Bowl in their time here that would certainly help.

He outright lies daily on things that are easily disproven, takes credit for legislation that was passed before he was running for president, and has been outed for his incompetence by those closest to him who are longtime republicans and have served republican presidents.

How do you defend that? It has to be exhausting.

This is why everyone should read multiple different outlets and hear differing opinions more often. Too many treat politics like a sport.

I agree with this, but you still just get multiple opinions you still have to decide which one you believe and quite honestly they all suck. We're again faced with horrible candidates for President.

It just sucks ethics is out the window. We truly have an illusion of choice

I told myself I wouldn't get into the science/politics in the blog for now but man are you guys making it hard with the BS being thrown around in here. Anyway this is pretty funny.

An attempt at football discussion before I head to bed in a moment...

I watched some highlights of the playoff win over the Falcons during the Super Bowl run tonight. One thing stood out that I guess I sort of forgot about. And that was how well Jay Ajayi played in that game, despite the costly fumble on the opening possession. This is why I'm always bothered when draft critics complain about the Eagle drafts over the past five years. Jernigan, Darby, and Ajayi -- as well as the final payments on Wentz -- need to be included when analyzing the picks the team made in that time span ('17 and '18 in particular). And those guys ALL contributed to SB52. That's the ultimate goal, fellas.

Bed time.

I think slowly but surely they are also showing that they are one of the top teams in the league at getting value from UDFA.  In the last few years, especially starting with Corey Clement, there have been multiple players selected (or stolen from other practice squads) that have contributed, and it doesn't look like that will slow down any time soon.

I think a guy like Jurrell Casey is in the mix with Geno Atkins too.

Yup hes been good as well. Its tough because there are guys like Snacks harrison whom a couple years ago was the best run stopping DT in the league but gave one next to nothing as a pass rusher. So how valuable is that one skill to stop the run?

Cox is elite at both and donald gets so much early pressure hes constantly screwing up running plays.

I think Cox in a non aaron donald era would be considered HOF but his accomplishments are over shadowed by donalds un real play.

Still i think if cox can keep up at an elite level or play long enough to accrue more stats he has a shot at HOF.

I think as is he has a similar career as cortez kennedy who is HOF.

Regarding the virus we can't just look at cases and say we're doomed.  OK so there are 10,000 new cases per week.  Out of that 10k how many are asymptomatic, how many only have cold like symptoms, how many are in nursing homes, how many require a hospital visit, how many require long hospital stays on ventilators and lastly how many are dying because of Covid, not WITH Covid?

I don't know those answers just saying we need to look at the big picture.  Just saying there are 10,000 new cases per week sure that can sound bad but let's look at the big picture, be smart in our analytics and take the best course of action based on them.  We've become a reactionary society.  Something happens or is reported and BAM we need to take action before thinking and gathering as much as possible.  (Case in point Bubba and the noose).

2003 draft produced LJ smith, thats it

But the udfa in 2013 produced, Rod Hood, starting nickel in super bowl, Sam Rayburn, second in sacks in 2004, Glew, up to that point the only WR to catch a td in a superbowl, Quinton Mikell, future pro bowl, Reno Mahe, led the league in PR ave one year. Artis Hicks, filled in after Shawn Andrews went down after 1 game. Clinton Hart back up safety and special teamer in 2004.

Thats 7 guys that werent drafted in one year that contributed to a super bowl team.thats excellent value.

Hopefully howie can keep finding more.

Here we are talking about defensive tackles on the anniversary of the death of Jerome Brown.  I wonder how he would stack up against Cox had he been able to complete his career.

I think you will see more of that with him in Las Vegas (had to think about that for a second).  No more pressure in Philly, a fresh start out West closer to home for him.  David Carr is a step down but I think he has a chance out there...or he gets cut before the season starts.  Will be interesting to see.

Has he learned how to catch a pass over his shoulder?  Or has he learned how to track a perfectly thrown deep ball to get within 5 yards of it?  Both things that average high school recruits can master.  If not, he'll be more of the same in Vegas.
