EMB Blog: Once AGAIN. Politics to CVON!!!!!

The system kicks us off so they show when we go to log in if we have the Blog open.  The political ads are to polarizing.  I mean, an add to Pray for Trump to an agnostic is offensive to me.

I'm not sure why you would be kicked off. For me, I log in and never log out. The board never kicks me off. Ads are generated randomly. I'll investigate and see if I can stop political ads from being included, but I'd hope that if any members see an ad or two, while they're logged out, they'll understand that the ads are there as a means of keeping the board funded into the future and I'd hope that everyone could just be a bit mature enough to just roll their eyes and shake their head at any ad that they may not like and ignore them on their way to logging in.

Maybe even chuckle a little because the intention of the ad was lost on them, which would mean that the money that was spent on making and serving the ad, was wasted by whichever political campaign may have spent the money... and that the 'wasted money', was going to help keep the EMB online.

I don't know if you were here on day 1 and 2 of the draft, but traffic on those two days was such that it caused the board to crash pretty hard. The image below shows the server stats from that time:

What that means is that the hosting package will, in all likelihood, have to be upgraded once the season (or maybe even as soon as pre-season/training camp) is upon us. But, if gamedays are as busy as they were on the old EMB, definitely by the time games roll around.

Back at that time (while the board was crashing during the draft), I spoke with the host company and they said that for the sort of traffic that we were experiencing, a business grade package would be required. The minimum cost for that kind of hosting package is (without looking it up), somewhere between $150 and $175 per month.

We have enough money left from the initial donations that we'll be able to upgrade, but it will take most if not all of our reserve funds to do it. I know that various people have said that they'll be more than willing to donate more, if/when the time comes to need more money to remain online. But I have to plan for the potential that no donations will actually be made.

Not being a rich man who can spend up to $175 per month out of pocket to keep the board online, how do I plan for that potential? Well, I've set up various affiliations with Amazon and Fanatics (and a few other companies) so that the board will earn commissions if people use our links to purchase things that they'd already otherwise purchase. I've also set up a Google Adsense account and set ads to display for guests (no member should see any ads if they are logged in and if you do, immediately let me know) and as I've said multiple times, I don't want any members to click on any ads with the intention of 'helping' the board generate revenue, that would actually hurt the board. But just the displaying of ads will generate a small amount daily of revenue. Not a huge amount, but hopefully, in conjunction with the other means that I mentioned, it'll eventually be enough that depending on donations won't be needed.

My goal is to make the board self supporting... self-sustaining, so that I won't have a couple thousand dollars hitting my credit card each year with nothing 'coming in' to pay it off.

So far, in the past month and a half (or so), the Amazon affiliation has generated almost $10 in commissions. Fanatics has generated a tad over $50, and Adsense has generated almost $25 (none of which has actually been paid out yet). That's all since May 4th (the date of the first Fanatics commission). Wouldn't it be great if those methods of revenue would be enough to ensure that the board is guaranteed to stay online indefinitely and I wouldn't be required to come begging from the members for donations?

I think there's a real question as to whether Iverson was the best team player in a team sport.  He had great individual talent.  I agree Schmidt should be ahead of him.  Schmidt is 16 all-time in HRs.  Iverson is 25th all-time in NBA scoring.  If you count NBA/ABA, Moses Malone and Julius Erving are 8 & 9 all time.  They should be ahead of him.  Carlton is number 11 all-time in career wins.

Agreed.  I think his influence on culture and his no fear mentality while on the floor has skyrocketed him into iconic and legendary status, but it outweighs his accomplishments on the court (compared to some of the people on this list).

The knot is a noose knot.  Want a pull rope knot, tie a taught line hitch. That’s three wraps. This looks like seven, which is a noose knot.  Can’t imagine why a person would use a noose knot on a pull rope.

Ummmm how Mike Schmidt wasn’t no. 1 on this list is ridiculous. Then again it’s WIP and they probably had ESP do they list. I love AI but he didn’t deserve to be 1 over Schmidt. Also disagree with utley being top 5 over clarke, Erving, Carlton and parent and i love utley. Schmidt is the greatest third baseman in MLB history and his accomplishments are ridiculous when you see them laid out.

schmidt’s accomplishments:

— 80 WS MVP (won title)

— 3x NL MVP (80,81,86)

— 10x gold glove winner

—12 x all star

—6x silver slugger

— 8x NL homerun leader

— 4x NL rbi leader

— Mlb all century team

— Mlb all time team.

The size is irrelevant...

That's what I said on my honeymoon

Foles deserves mentioning for delivering the best championship, best moment, and best story in Philly sports history.

Dawkins, edging out Utley, is probably the most universally and passionately beloved.

Iverson had the biggest national celebrity.

Clarke is unique in that he altered the landscape of Philly sports more than anyone in the city's history.  He made hockey matter in Philly and is responsible for the Flyers being part of this city's sports culture more than any other athlete is for their respective teams.

Schmidt and Reggie are probably a tie for most dominant relative to their peers at their positions.

And Schmidt has the best overall resume of a Philly athlete.

Yup, they are doing a two day enshrinement ceremony in 2021. Saturday for 2020, Sunday for 2021 on August 7th and 8th.

I wouldn’t worry too much about it until the time comes.  Your Adsense revenue should increase and should be directly correlated to site traffic.   So although your hosting costs will increase, so should the Adsense revenue.

It still might not be enough to cover all your costs but hopefully with the additional revenue from affiliate links and once more members use them, it should come pretty close.

If not, you could always add some sort of "premium member” annual fee, etc. and those members would get access to exclusive material and wouldn’t see any ads, etc.

Thanks for all you do.  If we can make the ads apolitical, I would suggest we do so. I just don’t think we want to give an affiliation impression if we can.  Me, I chuckle at the wasted money.

I think I get kicked off due to using Safari.  I think it is one of its safeguards.  It’s rare but it happens.

Any possibility of an affiliation with Chewy?  A lot of us have pets and probably use them.

My suspicion it was done for fun, with no intent other than "cool, a noose."

Then Wallace gets assigned the Bay, and one of his black crew members notices a noose as soon as they move in, and makes the obvious conclusion after Wallace pushes for a Confederate flag ban.

One of these weird, I couldn't make this up, coincidences.

I just made a list because I am so damn bored, but it's tough to find anything concrete on what NFL team is the most successful with UDFA, so here are the Eagles' that have "stuck," or at least provided value for never being drafted.  This doesn't include anyone like Boston Scott, who we snagged from someone else's practice squad.  Please feel free to add any that I missed on or forgot.

2015 - 16 UDFAs - only 1 that sticks out to me in Raheem Mostert, who we obviously lost.

2016 - 16 UDFAs - Aziz Shittu, Paul Turner, Destiny Vaeao, Marcus Johnson were contributors (not good ones).

2017 - 11 UDFAs - Corey Clement, Cam Johnston, Greg Ward, Tre' Sullivan - I'd consider this an A+

2018 - 15 UDFAs - Josh Adams, Joe Ostman, Bruce Hector, Chandon Sullivan

2019 - 10 UDFAs - TJ Edwards, Nate Herbig, Sua Opeta - still TBD

2020 - 13 UDFAs - TBD

That sucks. Have they given the option to not pay for 2020 but still keep your licence/seats for 2021?

Nope, not yet at least.  I am guessing they'll provide some option at some point, because there is no way in hell that stadium is going to be open at full capacity, which means season ticket holders will get only a subset of games, if any.  who knows how this will all work.  They'll probably shut the whole thing down and then say :we'll keep your money for next year".  ****

There is nothing " cool" about a noose.

A noose is notoriously known for 3 things, public hangings, suicide and lynching.

None of those 3 should be taken lightly and none should be happening in a nascar garage.

Zero reason to tie a noose as a pull rope on a garage, if one is doing it as fun or something cool than one has to wonder what else one considers fun or cool?

Just a bad look whether it was intentional or not or in or unintentionally ignorant.

If you use "private browsing” on Safari it will kick you off every time.  I had it on private for about a week and it was driving me crazy; couldn’t figure out why I kept on having to log back in every time I visited the site.
