While we're delving into this ugly little sub-genre, if this is your thing, Last House on Dead End Street is one that always stuck with me.  I saw it twice in a theater, both times unannounced.

It's the lowest of low budgets, incredibly grim, but it really sticks with you for a while.  I remember reading that they spent more of the budget on drugs than they did on the movie, and that kind of shows.  It's unpleasant but you can't deny it's impact.  Even with two hardcore horror crowds, this had a lot of "WTF was that" type of reactions in the audience.

Last House on the Left (Wes Craven version) is another good shock movie.

It is although the "keystone cops" segments always felt out of place to me.

Does anyone know the movie where a woman gets a wound on her arm and can't stop picking at it?

While you're discussing the snuff film sub-genre, someone's gotta mention the one that, largely, started it all, Faces of Death.  That movie was taboo back in the day.

I faked being sick the day my local video store was getting this series to rent so I could stay home from school, ride my bike over as soon as they opened and marathon them.

I just blind bought the Ruins the other day but haven't had a chance to watch it yet.  I remember it being bad mouthed when it came out but some horror critics I trust have been praising it.  It was cheap so I picked it up.

It's just a movie, IMO. Not terrible but nothing I would rush to rewatch

My folks were going out of town for the weekend, so I rented it the Thursday before they left.  Then, brilliantly, took it to school with me that Friday, to Holy Name High School, to watch with the other geeks in the A/V room.  One of the priests walked in and caught us, taking me straight to the principal, who promptly suspended me, telling me to come back Monday morning to discuss how long the suspension would be for.  Got in there Monday morning and he was in a forgiving mood, just telling me not to do it again.  My parents never found out.

That's hilarious.  For better or worse, I didn't have to hide it from my parents.  We never watched kids movies when I was little.  They took me and my brothers to everything from Jaws and Grizzly to Caddyshack/Cheech and Chong movies.  Pretty much anything other than porn, they were OK with.  My dad has always been a horror movie fan so it's always been our thing to bond over.  To this day, first thing he asks me when I talk to him, after how my wife and boys are doing, is what have I been watching.

Excellent movie.  The chic wrote/directed and acted if I remember right.

Salo, 120 days of Sodom is the one that reminds me the most of A Serbian Film.  Pure disgusting debauchery, but they are both hell of a well made films.

That's a good comparison.  It's been a really long time since I've seen Salo.  Not sure I want to revisit it though.

I just saw "Possum."  What the hell did I just watch?  I think I liked it, but I don't fully know what just happened.  That's puppet was creepy AF, and I thought the cinematography was pretty good.

Spoiler

I'm assuming "Possum" was his made up puppet that represented himself "playing dead" whenever his uncle terrorized him and all the other young boys.

I watched Southbound the other night.  Good call on that one.  Really enjoyed it.  Some genuinely creepy moments and I liked the interlacing of the stories/time line.

I also watched the Ruins the other night.  Whoever said it's just a movie was dead on.  So much unrealized potential.

Spoiler

They had a solid premise for some good body horror but stuck mostly to a few gore shots for shock value when it could have been so much more.  Also, you have a set up where if the characters escape/save themselves, they are endangering the entire world and they barely played on that dichotomy. They had a set up not unlike Carpenter's The Thing in that way but never leverage it to make the audience think or feel anything. It's mentioned but no character ever bothers to even contemplate thee potential consequences.

Has anyone seen the newest version of "The Grudge?"  I never saw the original, but I really liked the remake with Sarah Michelle Gellar.  That movie and the Ring are 2 movies that always freaked me the F out.

Agreed.  That was one of the few movies where I didn't care about the subtitles.  Awesome movie.

Another PG-13 horror movie that I thought was pretty good was Mama.  It was scary enough, and surprisingly emotionally affecting.

The grudge with Sarah Michelle Gellar was one of the few horror movies I thought was funny. It was just a bunch of Chinese kids meowing like cats lol

Watched the Netflix original The Ritual last night. I enjoyed. I've been craving a horror movie that doesn't absolutely suck and this one didn't.
