I looked up what is taught in a Sports Medicine Masters and two of the courses listed were "Sports Nutrition" and "Principles of Physical Therapy". Sure seems like something the Bachelor's would already have.

They have to take things slow and space them out for guys like HE. Don't wanna overwhelm him with too many advanced concepts in those first 4 years.

What did you learn in the Master's that you didn't already learn during the Bachelor's?

A lot. Bachelor's was in exercise science.

Exercise science? Might as well have been gender studies after all.

Good one.

Do reputable colleges even have programs for "exercise science"? I've honestly never heard of it before.

Looks like University of Pitt does (first hit when I Googled it)

Edit: Looks like West Chester University has one too

In my previous profession we were working on one. Any degree program that a University thinks they can make money from is fair game. Higher education is a sinking ship and every president, provost, dean, and department chair is looking for a life raft.

SPOILER ALERT: it's both

Yes. Depending on the college its also called exercise physiology, or Kinesiology. All the same.

It prepares you for jobs in things like being an clinical exercise physiologist, cardiac rehab, performance training like combine prep stuff, personal training, corporate fitness, etc.

And a great foundation for any health profession you go in to.

Oooor you could just get a biology degree like a doctor or physical therapist does.

You could.

But all of the doctors I know complain about their student loans too. And not everyone wants 12 years of school.

Physical therapy is boring. I can do everything a physical therapist does, and yet that is just 1 aspect of my job. I wouldnt want to do just that every day. There is more to my job that they dont do. Athletic trainers are also trained in acute injury management, and emergency care, which PTs dont do. Strength and conditioning, which PTs dont do. We also have expertise in nutrition, and sports psychology. Its much more broad than PT. But paid less.

Barriers to the profession receiving its full respect are that its still a fairly new profession, and not well understood. Much confusion between an athletic trainer which is a healthcare profession, vs a personal trainer which many people do without even having a degree and the jobs are not even remotely close.

It's true and physical therapists that know what  athletic training is know it.

These professionals work hand in hand frequently in various settings.

My wife is a specialist who deals with people recovering from brain injuries and severe head trauma. An athletic trainer cannot do that.

I'm so mentioning this at dinner to watch her freak out

Welcome to CVON. It's like when Munson tried to teach me about the banking system.

For the record -- I couldn't care less about your job.

Don't get me wrong. I was really thankful to have an athletic trainer when I was in junior high and didn't know how to tape my own ankle properly.
