Our CFO was adamant that we needed a vacation policy. He kept saying "what will we do if someone wants a vacation at a time that doesn't work!"

Our response -- "we'll fire them"

How much money have you saved with the "unlimited" policy?

i get six weeks and then holidays. we can roll over now and build up a bank to use for a sabbatical.

That is something we don't get offered. I would LOVE to do something like that.

take all the vacation time you want...there's no limit.

oh, but we might fire you for taking vacation time.

When we transitioned to a family office in 2016, we had to pay out a bunch of accumulated time off. Since then, we've had 3 people quit and fired one. The old policy I think was 15 days, but it rolled over. So probably at a minimum 3 weeks for people making like 150k each (2 assistants and a junior accountant) -- 9 weeks is about 26k in wages. The person we fired for cause wouldn't have been paid out (I don't think). She was our GC.

So peanuts? You Scrooge, you.

For the record, we've never denied a vacation request. Everyone is expected to be available as needed while on vacation.

Regardless, it sounds like you guys compensate more than enough for the expectation.

Don't like it, work somewhere else where a 30 year old can make 200k to be an assistant. Pretty simple.

Oh I completely agree. I'm just busting your balls.

If I could roll over and cash out like that, I would only take a half day for events like Grandma's funeral.

Must have not liked what you saw in the will and went back to work

Yeah, but at the same time I'll take someone who has put their time in, held different roles, can see the big picture, and is brilliant vs someone who put in the time to go to school and worked for a few years and doesn't have the same level of skills. There are engineers in Latin America for example who are amazing that haven't been to school.

And how much experience do they have?  Note that I said education isn't a must, but by MOST standards, its a pre-req.

yeah it's a nice deal. it used to be we could roll ten days, anything over that you lost. then it went to we can use anything over the ten days to put into the sabbatical bank and roll the rest. last year it went to you can roll anything into it, but once you do, you cant get it back to just use a few days if you run out of your current year time.

You'd be shocked where there are some good development centers.  One MDM vendor I worked with their entire development team for the project was a single dude in Latvia.

While in Marin, one of our development teams was from Mexico.  They actually out produced the team from India, who you would assume would be the off shore standard,  we also had on board.

In fairness to Vikas' employer, his industry is brutal, and if people who want to be part of that industry should know ahead of time what they're getting into.

TS/SCI: What an acronym reveals about the files seized from Mar-a-Lago

https://www.npr.org/2022/08/16/1117455322/trump-mar-a-lago-documents-fbi-ts-sci

Quote

The actual contents of those documents are unknown, but they included some from each of the government's security classification levels: confidential, secret and top secret. They also included a less familiar designation: TS/SCI, meaning top secret/sensitive compartmented information.

These classification levels refer to the documents and the level of security clearance an individual needs to access them. The levels also rise in order according to how much damage the unauthorized disclosure of the information could do, Mark Zaid, an attorney specializing in national security, told NPR.

"If there is an unauthorized disclosure of confidential information, it could reasonably be expected to cause damage to the national security of the United States," Zaid said. "At a secret level, unauthorized disclosure is expected to cause serious damage. And for the top secret level, unauthorized disclosure is expected to cause exceptionally grave damage."

@Moderator12 - very fortunate you reinstated this thread so we can go on for pages about company vacation policies . . .

Sure but country of origin has absolutely nothing to do with how "brilliant" someone is or how quickly they can grasp complex concepts.

Now, it can have a direct influence on work ethic and productivity. I'm sure we all know the stereotypical dude from El Salvador who put himself through school while supporting his family and through sheer force of will made it in a technical field. I have a couple on my team now.

But pride of ownership, experience, maybe some formal education, and luck are the main drivers that dictate success within the IT industry. You can find those things from in people from anywhere, if you're lucky enough to find them at all these days.

a thread has a will of it's own. there isn't a long standing thread is this forum that hasn't had its share of derailments. for the most part they come at a time when the thread gets a lil nasty a needs a bit of a cleanse.

Biden's campaign team will have the easiest job ever. The ads will basically write themselves.
