I’m about as pessimistic as one can be about a team that has the best record in its sport.

My opinion of the team hasn’t changed through any of the ups and downs this year. They are a playoff team. Once there, they can win a series, can lose a series….but they won’t string together more than 3 series wins in October.

They started the season hot, culminating in taking it to the Dodgers. Then they crashed all the way down to .500. Since hitting 500, they haven’t been able to lose.

I don’t expect them to play like this current streak all the time, but these kinds of wild variations are not normal.

In the regular season, their elite rotation depth rings up W’s. They have the pitching advantage nearly every single night.

In the playoffs, teams are condensing into 4 and even 3 man rotations, which is going to neutralize and dilute the depth of our rotation. We won’t be getting anymore freebie matchups of a guy that is a #2 for most MLB teams against placeholder starters with 5.50 eras. Those matchups give the Phillies almost one freebie win per regular season series.

Are Ranger, Walker, and Mick Abel going to be as useful for the Phillies in the playoffs out of their element in the bullpen as they were delivering quality regular season starts? Of course not.

The scheduling in October will allow more teams to generate starting pitching matchups comparable to ours and will bring the lineup and its inconsistencies to the forefront.
