Two infield singles to shortstop?

Im happy they won last night. But when they get to the playoffs, they are definitely losing a game in a series because Mattingly is clueless on how to use his bullpen. Last night was how to blow a game. Nola was running out of gas in the 5th but managed to survive and shouldn’t have been pitching against the two best hitters in the dbacks lineup to start the 6 especially not the third time through. McFarlane saved him. And then using Kerkering on back to back nights who’s been downright terrible the last month+. Fortunate that the diamondbacks ran themselves out of that inning. And then going to Alvarado in the 8th who was also fortunate that the Diamondbacks just kept swinging at everything. he wasn’t even close on a majority of his pitches.

Honestly with how unpredictable/unreliable Kerkering and Alvarado are I'd be more than fine seeing McFarlane in playoff high leverage situations before those two clowns.

So who do we trust out of the pen come playoff time at this point? Duran, Bowlan, McFarlane for sure - what about Raley and Mayza?

They can launch Kerkering and Alvarado into orbit

They didn’t even use Raley or Mayza yesterday. And they have been far better than Alvarado and Kerkering especially of late. I get it the diamondbacks hit left-handed pitching better but if you’re gonna use Alvarado, then you might as well use Mayza or raley cause both of them are better than Alvarado.

People forget how Kerk first looked and how he got here very similar in ways of McFarlane. He started off like one of the best relievers and was looking like the future closer for this team. Then the playoffs happened and he couldn’t do jack. Don’t make the same mistake with McFarlane. This bullpen stinks

Kerkering had much less time up before he got to the playoffs. He wasn’t called up until late September (sept 24) and had 3 outing. None of which were high leverage situations until the playoffs where he fell apart. Mcfarlane actually is going to have 2 months and to his credit he’s become a high leverage guy now based out of necessity.

Understood. I've just seen enough meltdowns from Kerkering to where if I had to pick him or anyone else, I'd pick anyone else and McFarlane has pitched great so far. I'd rather not see any of Kerkering or Alvarado in the playoffs but that's probably not realistic.

I get that part but the fact is he’s from AA we’ll have to wait and see if and when we get there how things will unfold. I’m not going to hold my breath with this bullpen, whoever is on the bump in high leverage situations except for Duran

I was confused by it since the battery was so much better against lefties than righties but it worked out

Yeah, I think I brought that up when I was watching it with my dad. I was like he hit something like 313 against left-handed pitching yet he brought him in anyways.

That was such a poorly managed game. Like they are very fortunate mattingly didn’t blow that game. People hated thomson’s used of the bullpen, but I would argue mattingly is worse.

I like Mattingly using Nola for as much as the Phillies can get out of him. It's not like you're gonna use him in October.

He actually pitched in Triple AAA, although to be fair, it was only 4 games and 4 1/3 innings pitched in Lehigh.

The issue was the inning before he was running out of gas. You could see it. then in the 6th up a run you were facing (the third time through the order) their best hitter and their second best hitter. Which he then went and walked and gave up a hit to. He was also mid 90s pitch count entering the 6th. This isn’t about running him into the ground. This is about being smart about winning baseball games when he showed the inning before he was running out of gas, and he had to face the two best hitters in the diamondbacks lineup, which he didn’t get either one out and nearly blew that game cause of it 

I re-iterate, Arraez is bad with RISP as a cleanup hitter. He’s hitting .233 since coming here with risp and .300 with no one in scoring position

I was just coming in here to say here we go again with arraez wish they would change it up instead of keep going with it.

It’s not where he’s hitting in the lineup, it’s who his hitting coach is now trying to fix something that was never broken

Eh long sucks but when you are hitting like .310 with no one on and .233 with RISP feels like that’s on him for pressing. Again, his career numbers of runners in scoring position looks good. But no team besides the Phillies have forced him to be somebody who drives in runs.

His supporting cast should all be held accountable for not doing their jobs consistently which required placing a guy like Arraez to pick up their slack to simply drive in runs was already a recipe for failure. Trea being terrible at the plate puts Kyle back in the leadoff spot, you get the picture. It’s a shame really when you look at what this offense could have been

I’d argue that’s a bigger failure on Dombrowski’s part. He needed a cleanup hitter for a couple years now and ignored it. If they had it arraez isn’t in that spot. Again long sucks at his job but the bigger issue is Dave ignoring a hole at cleanup for multiple years and just relying on aging jt, Bohm, inconsistent Castellanos and marsh. Now forced with Arraez .

I am all for bashing long. He is really not good at his job. He’s part of the issue and should be gone. However some of this is giving him guys who were either declining, inconsistent their entire careers or guys like Bohm who have no business hitting 1-4 and became a cleanup hitter
