The move created $17.374 million in cap space for the Chiefs in 2021. Mahomes\' cap number will increase by $4.343 million in each of the next four years of the contract. Mahomes signed a revised contract in September of 2023 that moved cash forward from later years, effectively giving him a raise of $48.3 million from 2023-26. The reworked deal also added two void years in 2032 and 2033 and changed his incentives to escalators to help create roughly $2.5 million in 2023 cap space.Mahomes converted a $47.745 million in salary to a bonus for cap purposes in 2025. The move lowered Mahomes' 2025 salary cap number by $38.196 million and increased his future cap numbers by $9.549 million in each season from 2026 through 2029.

Hurts has not changed his deal once since the new contract was signed, and doesn't need to. Hurts deal more secure and long term oriented, and we can see this as they won't need to address it anymore for a while. Already set up perfectly with the long term in mind.

May 29, 20251 yr Just now, mattwill said:The new contact was contract #2.Correct, no changes made after signed... because it was long term oriented without the need to change. When you keep changing something, that means the original wasn't set up for long term. Hurts will have hos numbers stay... Mahomes will keep pushing and increasing numbers down the road. Because it wasn't set up correctly long term, they knew changes were going to be needed. Hurts put his signature on 2 contracts, Mahomes has done it 5 times already.

Why do Cap adjustments need the player’s signature? The one that definitely would need his signature is the one that bumped up the guaranteed $. As best as I can tell the cash for the Bonuses had already been paid to Mahomes. To know for sure one would need a multi-year Cash Flow Statement.

A team can't just change a contract on their own. I thought that was obvious???

If I change pricing...or change time lines ..or change locations ...or change whatever, there is a new contract written and a signature. I change beneficiaries or insurance amounts...or change bank accounts for withdrawals...I need a client signature. You change a contract in any fashion, they sign it. Forget just the amount, adding any years to the contract...void or not, can change team control of a player, you bet the player needs to sign it.

The IRS is the NFL... the employer would be the team...the employee would be the player...If the NFL changed something the player or the team wouldn't necessarily have to sign anything. But if there was a change in the employer's health plan, the employee would need to sign the new contract.

For the most part these are administrative changes that don’t affect the earnings of the individual player. When they are not administrative there is a signature, when they are purely adminisrstive/ accounting, no signature. They are changes for a CPA, not a lawyer.

Lane and others have signed deals where the money just got converted to signing bonus. It changes the contract. The employee absolutely would have to sign a new health insurance application. 💯

" option to signing " change. By definition he was getting the money right away up front either way... so I could agree with the possibility no player signature needed. But the other two changes he absolutely had to sign. Revised contract and the changing of salary to bonus. He absolutely will be doing a couple more of those ...probably at least one of each if not more.

And that's not even looking at the huge difference in cap hits.
May 30, 20251 yr But your point... hey let's get Hurts some more endorsement deals... then maybe he won't need as much from the Eagles. It's logical...no doubt... but idk if that's a reality. Brady as your example...he was still getting paid by the team, they had bonuses galore... and a ton of dead money when he left. You don't necessarily have to be the highest pair guy...but it's still not necessary cheap for the team. Hurts to me...I think is the best contract in the league. The highest paid position and he gets paid well...but so team friendly cap wise. It's a good deal for a mediocre level QB... excellent deal for a top 10 or 12 QB.... phenomenal deal , absolutely a steal for a top 5 QB. And the timing is perfect with the environment within the league... more QBs will get paid.. and the cap will go way up. By the time we get to 2029... there will be kids playing in college this year that will be eligible to sign big deals going into their year 4. Hurts numbers will go even lower as far as cap hits for a QB. At that point the Eagles can decide if he is the guy they want with the next group of teammates.
