A lot going on in both sports.   The similarity is the passing game.  You have 5 options to cover just like basketball.   The stud offensive player draws some combination of the better defensive player and/ or double team.  That's the start of the game plan/ strategy .. from there everyone else reacts to how that goes.  

Use your boy Lamb as an example.   The defense should start the game plan there.  Dallas adjusts, then the opponent adjusts.   Where they move Lamb ...and where they move everyone else....with the idea of making it the most difficult to cover everything.

On top of that...my idea with the shutdown CB isn't as priority as you.  Because one guy doesn't cover all 5 offensive skill guys.   Only takes one weakness in the secondary...one mismatch and it's advantage offense 

Conversely...with OL vs DL.... the OL needs to be complete.  The DL only needs one mismatch to create an advantage. 

Therefore I see more priority for ONE stud WR or DL...  but a more complete group at OL and DB.

One player wise....  thst would be RG. Because a stud RG completes the OL

One stud CB ...complete shut down..  that's a start....but he can't cover everyone.  

Now with 2 studs added... we made progress in the secondary.  Hopefully they perform and we can view it to where one addition in the secondary can then complete the puzzle.

That's the mindset with basketball.  Everything starts with the one mismatch of the stud player. 

If the opponent doesn't have a stud WR... or a stud DL to game plan against.  It takes away the sizzle of a shutdown CB or stud pass blocker that could neutralize the one stud opponent. 

Who did Mitchell have to shutdown in bump and run for Toledo?   If there wasn't anyone for him...  you play him off so he can be involved more with helping everywhere else. 

In 5 months before the season....I can have Mitchell bump and run about a 1000 reps... he should pick up a little something before game 1. 

Do the math.   4 months time.  1000 reps = 250 reps per month.   Say 20 work days...  13 reps a day... I hope he gets that.

No I don't...I don't see coverages on 3rd down where guys give up a Cushion to start 5 yards behind the line...then continue to back pedal. 

Outside of the Eagles...I really don't see this much at all.  

Just flushing your 2 previous quality downs ...right down the toilet by giving up easy 3rd down play.

Nobody is arguing the concept of cover 3.   Just pointing out the obvious that it isn't going to work.   

You see the formation and adjust the coverage. Not a difficult concept to get.

Sure…sounds great. Doesn’t all the sudden mean a guy now has hip fluidity on the case of DeJean. Or mean that Quinyon has extension technique knowledge and experience in Bump and Run coverage.

See the one stud G doesn’t complete anything on the Oline. The Oline has to work seamlessly together as a unit. Seen five decent guys working together be real tough to beat. The best individuals working alone won’t cut it.

That’s not what we’ve seen the most from Fangio’s Ds so far. He’s more known for mixing up varying Zone concepts.  So you think in one offseason completely teach him everything? Just not very realistic in my mind. Think Fangio can maximize what he’s been doing so much in college…Off coverage. Man and Zones. And begin teaching bump and run techniques and rules.

If a coach could teach a kid everything in one offseason everything would be completely different. Year two TC : guys would just come in to party and lift weights. Just be checking in. I’ll even use my boy Hurts who has as extensive experience as it gets at 25. He has plenty still to learn and grow.

But you hear coaches and GMs say these things about just focus on one job…then expand from there. But then you want to jump to just have this other guy come in and perform a thousand roles? No consistency there in the train of thought.
