The base will be Q, Riq, Coop and Mukuba. In nickel, Coop goes to nickel and someone wins the safety job next to Mukuba. Carter and Epps will be in the mix with a rookie.

Remember - we traded for CJGJ at the end of camp in 2022. So there are always options. Hopefully a draft pick steps up.

we dont really play in the dumb "base" defense where DeJean was only potentially going to line up at safety because of injuries.

It wouldnt be the plan moving forward if the eagles are happy with their safety picture, and all are healthy. Plus, we hardly ever line up that way anyway.

If he is, then their plan likely failed. They should have a real safety out of this draft.

Playing him at S in "base" only became a thought last year because of injuries at the position.

Anyway, the base thing is only slightly annoying because our true base is nickel anyway, in which case he will not be at safety.

I wouldn’t say the plan failed. The plan should be to put your best 4 on the field and Cooper is that.

But agreed he’ll predominately play Nickel

It definitely feels like the Eagles view one of their CBs as a S

Again, that never became a discussion until there were injuries at safety. That wasnt the plan at safety from day 1 and it wont be moving forward.

And it really didnt matter much since they line up in "base" about 3 plays a game. Its not our base because its really not how we get our best players on the field.

This isn't a weak draft at all.

It is and it isn’t. (Dang, I sound like……..). Let me articulate. There are positions in this draft that are very weak, OT, QB, RB, for example, but that is almost always the case. But blue chip players are lacking. Not sure I can look at any player in this draft and say he is likely a future All Pro. (Closest for me are Downs and Love and both probably don’t make the top ten because of position). The strength of this draft is a number of players that project to be solid starters and solid backups and projects. This is a better draft for teams drafting 20-32 than for teams drafting 1-10. Luckily for the latter, the top of the second looks solid too. In fact, the Day that excites me is Day 2 of this draft. Early Day 3 has promise. But sleepers at the end of Day 3 (rounds 6-7), UDFAs (except LS) are kind of blah at this point so "deep” is a matter of perspective.

Interestingly, Howie has accumulated draft choices that go with that assessment. 4 top 100 picks and only real late picks accomplished by an unexpected comp pick.

The only current QB that you can tell Brady truly respects.

I agree completely but I also think we are really underrating Carter II in that role. I think he can do very well with that. I almost want him to get that shot.

This is sort of semantics, but it’s getting old fashioned to call it the base defense when it’ll be on the field well under 50% of the time. IMO, base defense is the one on the field for >50% of the snaps and that’s the one with 5 DBs.

My bet is Howie’s preference is an OL in rd 1. Maybe a DE if they don’t do a deal for Greenard. Safety seems like a fall back plan as BPA but I really don’t think Howie would love pick 23 on a S

So we moved up 8 picks in the 4th round and 18 picks in the 6th round.

That seems like a bad trade but more indicative with how bad Brown is.

It’s essentially a 5th rounder in value based on the old chart. Not bad for a guy who basically never really started. But not good from the standpoint of where they originally selected him.

Don't tell certain people this but they are playing in the Fanatics flag football championships against team USA which is why they are in a picture together.

I'm stunned we got anything for Brown. Depending on what chart you use, it's a 5th or a 6th. That's more than he's worth.

He brings the energy. Good dude. But we'll be better long-term with this trade.

It's not just EJ saying that.

"Seeing him as a safety" the same way they "saw Avonte Maddox as a safety" isn't the same as being a full time starting safety. EJ Smith was insisting for the last two weeks that he would be their starting safety opposite Drew Mukuba which isn't going to happen if someone is just using a modicum of common sense. They aren't pairing two smurfs together with a total of 10 games of starting experience at safety together on a contending team.

Yeah I have been hoping he just decides to stay in the flag league.

JT Gray bounced around 3 different Practice Squads last year. It's a fine dart throw to see what he has but he seems he's more of a camp body than anything.

Yeah I mean I’ll take that unknown + everything else over the known of Sydney Brown. Not gonna pretend to know Gray’s life story, but most 29 YO pure STers cut early season I’d imagine would have a tough go sticking on an active roster…especially with the new-ish PS call up rules.

I’m fine the Eagles trying Michael Carter at safety. I’m not fine if they make him a starter. If they did that’s pure arrogance or something went horribly wrong in the draft

Bingo. You don't pair two smurfs together as a starting safety duo. You also don't pair two guys with a combined 10 NFL starts at the safety position as a starting safety duo if you are a legit contender. Add those two things together and anyone with half a brain can see that isn't going to happen. Bringing back Epps is just the cherry on the top to that and I wouldn't be borderline surprised if they didn't draft a safety somewhere in the 2nd-4th round range. Maddox was "used as a safety" later on his time here as well but there is a big difference between that type of role and being a full time starting safety. Not to mention that Carter did nothing for the Eagles after they traded him despite there being serious opportunities in the secondary with Adore Jackson as the CB2 and Drew Mukuba out for the last 3rd of the season, and he is coming off of a couple of down seasons with the Jets as well. This Michael Carter nonsense is laughable.

What position do they have Hurts playing?

He's a multiple time ST's all pro. If nothing else he replaces what Sydney Brown gave you there and he can't possibly be worse as a depth safety. If someone else ends up being better they can just cut him.

Ok, but in reality he was playing outside CB in "base” because CB2 sucked and they wanted their best players on the field. Now that they seemingly upgraded their outside CB and don’t need Cooper there anymore, it’s likely going to be S where he lines up in the 5 or so plays a game.

The "what is base” is just semantics.

The draftniks chart has it around early 6. But getting anything for him is a plus.

base is semantics, and any defense where cooper moves out of the slot is stupid so lets not line up that way at all.

He looks stupid period. I'd use that dumb children's book that came out as fire starter for the pit

Ok so on plays there isn’t a NCB where he’s playing?
