Can anyone tell if that McLane article on Julian Lurie is worth a read or maybe summarize it? I’m not a subscriber & don’t feel like becoming one

I found the article thru a link on BGN and read the entire article without subscribing to anything. I didn't find any revelations in it.

I can't imagine a piece on Julian lurie being anything besides the most boring piece of journalism on earth.

Summary: he’s plugged in but not too plugged in. He's really smart, but doesn’t assert himself ever, just asks a lot of questions and is inquisitive.

Once Jeffrey is gone, who is also turning 75 this year, it’ll be Julian running the show. Maybe it is a boring piece, but I’m at least curious to know something about him now since he’s becoming more involved & will be a main part of this franchise someday.

I think the situation with Hurts is pretty straight forward. He's into the classic period of losing his elite QB running ability and he needs to compensate by improving his basic pocket game and that includes the motion and play action. Plenty of others have made that transition successfully but it is far from certain. If he develops then he stays. If he isn't successful in the transition then he won't get a new contract.

I honestly can't think of "many" that have made the transition. At least not well.

McNabb and McNair are two that come to mind

Thats going back a ways now.

Those guys grew up in a west coast offense.

These days, colleges AND pro teams have adjusted schemes to take advantage of running ability, and help hide QBing deficiencies.

Guys like Hurts have been coddled and protected. He has less experience trying to learn real NFL offense. He hasnt had to play in one ever. He has a long way to go.

For McNabb it was a process from day 1.

His athleticism helped carry the team, but the offense was still a complicated Andy Reid west coast system that he was running from day 1, that took years for McNabb to master.

If Hurts needs to learn a real offense in 1 year or not get extended- its a real good bet against him playing well this way and earning that extension. Im not sure we have seen it done.

For sure but there are examples even if the situations were different.

TL/DR:

Julian was the source of the locker room fracture after he raw dogged the massage therapist of AJ Brown and Hasson Reddick and said "I'm Julian F'ing Lurie. What are you going to do about it?" AJ Brown thought his former friend Jalen Hurts had enough of a voice to confront Julian and put him in check but when Brown asked him to, Hurts pretended like he didn't know who Julian was. Reddick and Brown then both asked for trades. There were some other instances of Julian not knowing who a new player was, such as Jaire Alexander, and thought he was one of the other players suppliers. He approached Jaire and got in a heated argument over yayo which led to Jaire leaving the team.

Both had + arms

I mean he must have had a tough uphill climb to get to where he is as next in line to take over from his parents.

Yes. On the other hand, Hurts throws a very catchable ball and is extremely accurate on sideline and deep balls so he has a few things to build on.

I’m not convinced he can do it but he has earned a fair shot.

Agreed. That wasn't to say Hurts is a noodle arm, he has an NFL arm. Just that both McNabb and McNair had plus arms which in theory makes the transition easier.

Parent. Lurie divorced a while ago.

I think the example to aim for is a poor man's Steve Young. Young did have a stronger plus level arm but his biggest passing strength imo was that he was very accurate. Ran smart and well but didn't have blazing speed. His rushing attempts and yards dropped off a bit after the first few years and then strangely picked way back up again in his last full year. I don't think Hurts can reach the Young levels but I think he could improve and trend in that direction.

Steve Young, but he needed 3 things:
1 - change of scenery.
2 - Time to sit and watch.
3 - Working with perhaps the greatest QB whisperer of all-time, Bill Walsh.

Yeah, I brought up Young in a subsequent post.

How about Roger Staubach? Not only was he very much a running QB in college (Navy) but he took five years off after school to complete his military service. It dates me to mention that I saw him play Michigan in Ann Arbor and win. That was the first football game I ever attended.

We just keep going further and further on to the past. So it's fair to say, extremely unlikely.

I take that back. I had attended plenty of games before that, but it's the only one I remember fairly clearly.

Both became much worse players after their athleticism declined.

The only guy I can think of who became a great passer after losing his athleticism was Cunningham with the Vikings. But that wasn’t sustained — basically a Randy Moss special situation where everything came together perfectly for one year.

Frankly, I think the Eagles would like to trade Jalen hurts if they were going to move on. I could see a market for him for a team like the Houston Texans. if CJ Stroud plays poorly/unevenly again, I could see demeco Ryan’s wanting hurt. He’s not gonna turn the ball over and I’m guessing Ryan probably feels that his defense being as great as it is that hurts over stroud could propel them to a title

That worked pretty well for the Eagles in 2024.

Then you wouldn't be disappointed.

Do you have any recent examples of guys who failed to make the transition?

Nah, McNabb was pretty darn good in 2004 and he ran a lot less that year.
